OP....EVO is a good phone... you will love it over the HERO.
It is a big upgrade in power and should take care of most of your complaints of the Hero. only thing is the extra $10 charge per month.
If you dont mind the $10...
and if you have any complaints on the Hero..
and if you love the hero...
then get the EVO.

What issues are you expecting? I don't place phone calls on my Evo using Google Voice (receive them though, but that's nothing to do with the app), but voicemail and texts work perfectly.

The speed difference between the Hero and the EVO is tremendous. A stock, unrooted EVO blows the Hero away in responsiveness. The EVO also has Android 2.2 and will likely get the next version of Android as well (don't quote me on that). The Hero is stuck at 2.1. Better camera on the EVO.
The EVO is just an all around better phone than the Hero. If the additional one time cost and the monthly Premium Data charge don't matter to you then there is no reason not to get the EVO.

I got mine the day I qualified for the upgrade price (also as an early birthday gift). It would be an understatement to say the Evo is better than the Hero. Faster processor, bigger screen and better options than the Hero.
I hope you know that you MAY experience power management/battery issues. But the Hero's battery can be used in the Evo...so you have a portable backup power supply. And (birthday bonus for me) my Hero still has wifi, so it's like an iPod touch.
Anyway (imo), you won't regret upgrading.

That's what I'll be doing on November 1st, which is 3 days before my 60th birthday.
Hell, there's even a new 4G tower within range of my home.
What more could an old fart ask for, 'cept maybe free wifi tethering.

I luckily have 4G in my work area, the speeds are crazy pulled almost 8mbps down and 1mbps up while at a sports bar after work today. It was great I just love my Evo, I would still love it if I never hit 4G.

I rarely ever even turn on the 4g.....don't need it. My 3g speeds on the evo are 3 times what they were on my hero. Depending on my location, I can pull 1.2-1.5 down and .9 up on 3g, which is nuts!

There is no comparison between the Hero and the Evo except that they are both sprint htc phones. They are like comparing a Katana flip phone with the evo. THe Hero cant hold Evos jockstrap. I had the hero and liked it for about a month, (owned a palm centro before that). Hero started lagging, and sucked in every way a phone could suck. My evo does have battery issues but my two extra hero batteries help that. Evo has everything that you wish a Hero could do.
If you like your hero, you will LOVE your Evo. You will immediately notice how much better Evo is when you turn it on the first time.
All I can say is make the switch, and 4G or not, if you dont like it better, I will run naked through the streets on the coldest day of the year. Im that confident. Unless the small size matters to you. But like they say, bigger is better.

I don't have 4G in my area, and there is no official word on them even considering it in the near future. At first, I was put off by the $10/month per phone, and even considered going back to Blackberry to avoid it.
Boy, am I glad I didn't do that. The Evo feels like what an Android phone should be. It blows my Hero away hands down.
With the Hero I was constantly having to remove apps due to small internal storage. I've got twice as many apps on the Evo, and no sign of running out of storage. Devs are starting to enable sending their app to the SD card as well, which is an option available in 2.2 of the OS.
Bottom line, you won't regret upgrading to the Evo at all.

I am in the same boat as the OP with trying to figure out if I want to do the Sprint Premier customer upgrade ($199) for the EVO or not.
I recently found out about launcher pro and loved being able to customize my Hero.
But I want to have one device to carry with me that does everything, music, internet, streaming, phone instead of carrying my HTC Hero and iPOD Touch 4G.
I don't care about the $10 extra part. It is what it is and it's either deal with it or not.
One thing I am puzzled about is the comments I see from people about how they loved there Evo and then when they learned about root and rooted there phone, they love it even more, but don't say why. At the same time, I don't know much about rooting and what it opens up to you on the phone.
I have a jailbroken iPOD Touch 4G so I know a little about that, but root I don't understand fully.
I keep battling back and forth on whether to upgrade or not or wait and see what happens next year.
I don't see myself watching videos/movies on my phone, except on the rare occassion that I am at work at the hospital on a holiday and sitting around waiting for a page. Other then that, I just wouldn't do it.

Hero is still one of the best Androids on Sprint. I say its top three regardless of the newer mid ranged Androids that have been released. I'd still have it if I didn't upgrade the Evo.
