would these guidelines work for ubuntu 10.04 i had that running on my build

I tried with 10.04 and it seems the repositories are different. and the guides I've found for 10.04 are outdated and have outdated repositories. I had better luck with 10.10. I would use 11.04 but I just can't stand the unity crap... Gnome is by far the best. The guides hroark posted are the best ones..

thanks hroark actually searching through older threads you and Koumajutsu laid out a good path for me.my goal is to try to compile the kernel from source.

first thing is to have a goal

what do you want to try to make?

do you want to make a ROM like CM7 that is compiled mostly from source code or do you want to MOD the stock ROM, or try to port a different ROM to the phone

Why dont you try to build a CM9 (ICS) ROM from source

start buy getting yourself a pretty good Linux system setup
then look on the web for guides on how to build a dev system
