CyanogenMod-6 for Hero V6.0.0 - RC1

I think CyanogenMod 6 is set to 691 MHz by default. That seems snappy enough for me. ;)

It's only set at 691 for every phone to boot up. Stock kernel in the newest nightlies, you can overclock without flashing an uncapped kernel

So you are saying that it is only at 691 MHz when your Sprint HTC Hero is booting up? So it goes back to the stock 528 MHz speed and stays there after the handset has finished booting?

Wow, I did not know that and neither did my friend who has a rooted Sprint HTC Hero with CyanogenMod 6. Does CyanogenMod 6 do any kind of CPU load reduction when the handset is asleep?

No it does not stay at 528, it fluctuates up and down from 691. When the phone goes to sleep, it will be at a lower MHz. Using set cpu or oc widget, you can set those frequencies from 19200 than 768000 using the newer nightlies or after flashing an uncapped kernel
 
I would say my Hero is about 40-50% faster with CM 6 (8/9 Nightly) at 691mhz and JIT enabled. My phone just screams compared to how it used to perform on 2.1.

I went to a Sprint store the other day and held a EVO (set at 3G) in one hand and my Hero in another and did a little informal speed test, opening apps, etc. Of course the EVO was so very fast with its 1ghz, but the Hero held its own and was quite respectable compared to it, at least compared to how fast it used to be on 2.1. What I was thinking to myself at the time was the EVO was not $10 per month faster.

Don't get me wrong, I am all over a new super phone when Sprint releases it, but the EVO doesn't shine so bright any more and I don't like the slide out keyboard of the Epic. The current set up I have gives me a little more time to hold off on an upgrade, that's all. And in this fast developing Android phone market, I look at that as a good thing. ;)
 
Those are very good points, deedub. My problem, when I finally do upgrade, is that there probably will not be a 3G only superphone available. It looks like all of Sprint's new smartphones will be 4G and I do not want to pay the extra $120 a year for that. I am perfectly happy with 3G and Wi-Fi.

I am still in the thick of it in terms of researching about rooting. It does look like I will go with CyanogenMod 6 when I do finally feel totally comfortable with the whole rooting process.

Painless, easy and worked like a charm for me. One button to turn on root, another to turn it off. The new version available after this was written even has a "soft root" which only roots the phone until you reboot again, and then in automatically unroots itself.
 
Yeah, ironically, that is the method that I am thinking of using, deedub. I have a question though. If I Nandroid backup my stock Android 2.1 with Sense ROM so that I have a safety net to return to in the event of disaster, does that stock ROM keep the root?

I have read somewhere in a thread that you need to flash something else to keep the stock ROM rooted, but maybe I am remembering things wrong. I have gone through a TON of information over the past week to get to the point of knowledge that I am at now. By the way, what would the advantage of the soft root be? I suppose it would allow you just enough time to flash a recovery image and then it would relock the NAND? Is the normal method of Universal One-Click rooting a hard root that lasts? Which would be the better one to perform?

IMO, you may be much less of a Sense advocate when you have CM6 for a while, at least that is how it went for me. I used to feel exactly like you, but now I can't see going back to it unless of some unforeseen catastrophe.

I am not totally sure, but I would think it the One Button root installation would be present on your 2.1 backup.

Also, when you have CM6, it is natively rooted, so if you were doing a recovery boot, you would see the 2.1 backup on your SD. If it installed without the root app, just reinstall it.

ROM Manager, down loadable after rooting, allows you to manage your ROMS easily. I am continually backing up my CM6 ROMs as I tweek them exactly to my tastes, then I remove the previous CM6 backup, but I still leave the 2.1 Sense ROM on the SD, just in case.

I think the soft root option would just give you another option to choose from if you were "iffy" about rooting.

I suppose what I am asking is if the method of rooting with Universal One-Click is a fairly permanent root? I am interested in staying rooted and only unrooting by reflashing the stock Android 2.1 RUU in the event I need to take my Sprint HTC Hero in for service.

Don't flash a gsm rom or gsm radio, that would be the disaster:eek:
 
i have CM6 installed, w/ overclockedfix.zip installed, & w/ #9 uncapped kernel installed as well, & using clockworkmod recovery (RA-1.6.2.img is also on the phone), so my question is how do i flash a nightly build, do i need to wipe, or can i just flash them over cm6, & also if i flash a nightly build will i loose all my settings, eg: ringtones, email settings, apps, etc,,, & have to redo all my settings, or will they still be like they are?

will i have to redo the overclockedfix.zip, & uncapped kernel if i flash a nightly

From what I have learned, you just wipe the cache and the Dalvik cache and flash the CyanogenMod 6 nightly ROM over top of the previous one the same way as you would flash any new ROM. I believe you keep your settings and other items.

As for the overclocked.zip and uncapped kernel, I am not 100% sure if you would keep those. I think you might lose them. Somewhere I read that the nightly builds of CyanogenMod 6 are already able to be overclocked. I would check into that more first.

Download the nightly Index of /cm/nightly/heroc/ (912 I would suggest). Boot into recovery and wipe Davlik cache and cache, flash nightly

You will not lose any settings on your phone, just don't wipe data

You will have to flash the uncapped kernel(#13 pretty awesome) or the overclockfix.zip No need to do both

i already downloaded 912.

what would you do, flash the uncapped kernel, or overclockfix.zip

ps, i already flashed both overclockfix & uncapped kernel #9 yesterday, is there any bad effect to this.

oh, & i cant go to xda, is there site down?

For me, the last few nightlies I was having lag issues with the uncapped kernels. So I just oc'ed the stock kernel (that changed around the 907, being able to oc the stock kernel) ran nice:) Last night I flashed 912 with Dec's #13, running great.

Nothing wrong with flashing both kernels, just do not need to
That said, since xda is down, try overclocking the stock kernel for now until you can download the uncapped #13

cool, i got 912, & viewed a cached version of xda, & got the #13 uncapped kernel, & also have the overclockfix.zip just incase.

im gonna flash 912, & #13 here pretty soon.

This might just be my stupidity (or i might have just missed it in backreading), but on the 9/11 and 9/12 builds i'm not getting a notification for voicemails. Is there anything special I'm supposed to install or change to get a notification for a new voicemail? *I was running fresh 2.4 and yesterday I flash cm6 9/11 build and just flashed the 9/12 build and rebooted a few times. After a reboot I get mms message for the voice mail, but nothing when it comes in.

There are/were some bugs in the last couple of nightlies that dealt with notifications. Hopefully they will be smoothed out in the 913
 
so i just realized after the 9/11 nightly, that my text autocorrect isnt working on any keyboard. yes, i have gone through the settings for each. anyone getting this or know of a fix? I am mainly using the droid X multitouch, but im fairly sure it has worked with this keyboard, so im thinking it was a nightly?
 
so I'm still a little confused with this rom I'm currently runngin DD 2.8 because I have a few questions about this. Do I need to flash the rom linked on the first post of this thread and then flash nightlies? Or can I just jump to the latest nightly and flash that?

Secondly, do I need clockword mod recovery to flash this? I'm still using Amon Ra's recovery image, it's what I learned to flash on and it's what I'm used too, I tried clockword mod for a little while and hated it.

And thirdly, what are the essentials to flash along with this rom? What I mean by that is what else neds to be flashed with this (i.e. google shits, VVM fix, overclock fix etc. etc.)

thanks for any and all help this rom is the first one that I haven't tried because I'm too nervous, it sounds like it takes a lot to get it up and running

You can flash the newest nightly and then flash the google addon

RA is fine

It depends if you want to overclock. If you do, 2 ways either overclock the stock kernel in the newest nightlies or flash an uncapped kernel [Kernel] BrainFuct Kernel - UncappedKernel - xda-developers Go with one of the stables, brainfuct will mess with your gps

GPS fix is an APK. Does it need to be loaded anywhere in particular?
