heres a question. If the Eris gets root and 2.1 in the same day, which would YOU pick?
I would take the rooted ROM over a locked-down ROM any day.

I really appreciate all of the work going into this project, thank you guys.
If I can help, let me know (I'm not a programmer but I do have some computer, networks, and security experience/training and I know linux fairly well...let me know)

I'm still confused why a modified version of the Nexus exploit won't work on the Eris.

And if HTC watches these posts what's stopping them from getting an account and acting as a developer to find out what you know?
(not trying to make you guys paranoid it's just something to consider if you haven't already)

I knew what would happen.... VZW would push out 2.x and people would get a little estatic and immediately update in their giddiness and (possibly) hurt their ability to root the phone.

Can you get clarification on this part ? I thought once the phone is rooted, we can put a ROM for Android 1.6, 2.0, 2.x, and so on ? Whatever someone builds and the user chooses to apply. Also, I thought rooted phones don't take OTA updates anymore ?

Sorry for all of the questions, it just seems like some conflicting information.

Its okay :)
This is only pertaining to if 2.1 were to come before Root, and you were to have upgraded already.
I understand the confusing part...and I believe like you that with a Rooted phone you shouldnt be able to get OTA updates, but it is still an unkown or at least semi-debated.
As far as the Roms are concerned, yes we will be able to put 1.6 or 2.0 or 2.1 once Root has happened, thats just a matter of Trial and Error and Chef work...
Sorry if it get confusing at times...if you check out XDA its more clear as thats the original source .....

as long as we can put the 2.1(and any future ROM) on the Eris after Root, I think i'll be quite happy till my NE2 is up. Oh wait, thats next month!! Eh I think i'll hang on to that upgrade for awhile, i like the Eris =]

well seeing as how the N1 was rooted before it came out, i have a feeling that our 2.1 will be locked up tighter then any other version, same as the droid's. BUT as soon as all the "newer" android phones have 2.1, we are gonna have both the Hero & Droid's Dev team right along side of our own, breaking the walls down to the phones inner most secrets.
Bring it on HTC, our forces can take you

I am sure that Verizon would be more than happy to allow 2.1 to be rooted on the Eris, and to be just like the N1 where you can tell once it rooted, that way it voids warranty. That would be a huge money maker for them. On the other side, rooting gives access to apps that allow for things like converting your WWAN data connection into a WIFI hotspot. That drains network rescources too fast for them with a truely unlimited data plan. It is a toss up. They will not throttle with high usage in fear of lawsuits, or it may very well be illegal now, I am not sure.

I am anxiously awaiting root for the Eris as I want access to delete stupid apps that Android and HTC put on the devices that slow down the device and run down battery like footprints.

My main concern is hardware capabilities when rooting and going to 2.1 OS as the N1 is running a 1ghz processor, and the Eris's is running the same processor as the G1. What are your thoughts on how well the processor will be able to run the 2.1 OS?

My friend just got the N1, and it is smooth, he paid full retail, and hopes that LTE will be released by Verizon in our market by the end of the year to throw it on Verizon as T-mobile is edge where we are, and AT&T does not have good coverage, but does have 3g. When Verizon releases LTE it is SIM based, and Verizon plans on releasing the N1 as of this spring, so fingers are crossed.

I want to say thank you to everyone that is working on this project as I want root FAR MORE than I want 2.1, so thank you, thank you, thank you.

You know, I have been trying and trying my hardest to figure out why some one couldn't root the writ and until I started following this thread I couldn't figure it out so to all the devs I wish you luck and the night you find Out and post the root was successful I will buy beer liquor and hookers for everyone gl to yall

Just curious, but how does LTE play into verizon releasing the N1 in spring? I don't think any handsets that support LTE will be released on verizon this year since they are still in the early testing stages of the LTE network.

If it helps ease your concerns, I'm currently running a 2.1 build on my Hero, for which I think Cyanogen used the N1 as a base, and the CPU has no problems.

I think this will be one of the biggest reasons that people want root over 2.1. From my understanding, Cyanogen makes very effecient ROMs that perform above and beyond what comes from the handset makers (why google or a manufacturer has not hired this guy yet is beyond me). I doubt HTC's 2.1 ROM will perform as well as a skillfully cooked ROM. I'm sure the Eris will be able to handle HTC's ROM fairly well because another thread has a (i'm assuming) vzw tester posting details on performance and function, but having a no bloat ROM is definately worth waiting for root.

I hope that people have paid attention the the part where Acidbath says that he fully believes root will be achieved before 2.1 is released. From that, you can infer that root is very close to completion and there is confidence in that fact. I'm telling the impatient part of me to hold on just a little bit longer....

It's foolish to pick and choose what you want to hear when he also posted this:
"Once we have root, someone *me* should be able to write some code to bypass the sig checks in the android source, so we can get 2.1 *without* losing root, assuming we have root before 2.1 comes out.

Another thing to point out - my advice is DO NOT UPGRADE to 2.1 until we get root. 2.1 runs a newer kernel, meaning we could do a diff between the old kernel and the new one, and find some exploits that were patched. All in theory of course "

So I dont want to tell everyone whether to accept or not accept the upgrade/OTA once it happens. I will say that I think it would affect whether you could Root though. At least for sometime until we could write some code.

So with that said it is up to each individual. We hope to have Root before 2.1 OTA rolls out, and we are pretty confident that we will.
That developer is being realistic and NOT jumping to conclusions and NOT assuming they'll root the phone by any date.

I am not going to get in a pissing match with you Hallstevenson. I didn't claim that there is a date nor did I make a conclusion of such. I just saw the bit above and it says what it says. If it takes two months to get root and acidbath is wrong, then so be it. Thus far, acidbath has been careful not to give info that leads you to believe what is not there. I don't believe that he would lead us to believe otherwise were he not confident in the progress that has been made. That is the end of my commenting on this matter.

Just to make this a NON-ISSUE and set the record straight...
I do think that we will get Root before 2.1 OTA rolls out.
This is based on my belief and information that I dont think 2.1 will roll out until sometime in April.
Once again please understand that this is a "Hope" and "Confidence" in Our Amazing Team that leads me to believe that.
I am not making promises or setting an exact ETA.
Also I will not comment on my 2.1 thoughts, they are based on myself personally speaking to an "Insider" that is testing 2.1 roms on Eris.
But again, that is merely Hearsay, and i tend to not believe things that are not tangible and right in front of me.
