Root Dead thread.

No offense, but by the time someone could learn the necessary skills, the Eris will be long obsolete. If someone decides today to "be a dev" and do root the phone, they're either a genius or had dumb luck.

My point was that I don't want to see people expecting others to root this phone when they, themselves are clueless. I would love for root to be accomplished and will say thanks in any way I can if it happens but I don't post expectations.

It's surprising how much root has affected people...I don't mind waiting for it. I wouldn't mind if the OTA would come either. As of right now, I'm good, just have little grips about the phone I believe can be fixed easily with an OTA. Root, no Root, whatever.

I'm taking a week off from this forum and the XDA forum. Not gonna make it an issue in my life when it's not important. Maybe others should do the same.

What really helped me was downloading an ubuntu enviornment and messing around with that.
Head over to XDA and check out the old G1 and Hero Root and Discussions...

This site was great for me starting:
KernelHacking - Linux Kernel Newbies

I would say start here:
CompleteNewbiesClickHere - Linux Kernel Newbies

Thanks for the links! I've jsut done a tiny bit of programming in visual basic myself, but loved it and would love to be able to give Android a try. I'd never begin to think about trying to root it, but reading up more on it sounds like fun. Again, thanks for the links and all the hard work trying to root it. :)

^^^^^^ yea that!

@alprazolam I will say you are right about me being clueless about android. But come on. You remember the first time breaking the rules and doing illegal stuff. If not, you should try. IT a Rush. Just kinding. @acidbath5546 thanks for the post of the links. You have now made one less clueless brain in the world. Now I must leave to master the alchemy of rooting. ROFL

@flspnr
No problem man, I came from WinMo Builds...its all learning and trial and error and error and error...lol

@blue
Your hilarious man! Enjoy :)

new here.....hi! :)
don't want to sound like an a-hole
is there going to be a root for the eris i just dont feel like there is, especially if 2.1 comes out before root which thats what is looken like and knowing me i will update even tho i want root more what im just say en is there going to be a root for the eris or not.

Yeah, probably.

You think 2.1 will come heavily patched like the recent 1.5 kernel release, or do you think they'll let up a bit on it, allowing it to be rooted? It's a double-edged-sword because if you upgrade to 2.1 but the devs keep working on 1.5, it's possible 1.5 really is fool-proof but 2.1 isn't and we'll need to wait longer for a root. Or, the other possibility is everyone jumps to 2.1 which is fool-proof and the one trivial exploit on 1.5 goes undiscovered forever and we have the first Android phone that was never rooted. Or a pioneer for future phones which also come fool-proof.

It works for sure.

I've said before, xda looks abuzz with 2.1 rooting now.

It's funny reading some of the replies... People asking if they can simply change the checksum of a file that's corrupt, not able to use the command line to patch a file when given the exact command, etc, etc. Some clearly should NOT be attempting this !

So I would like to know where acidbath stands on rooting the eris now that it has 2.1.

"just when I thought I was out...THEY PULL ME BACK IN!" LOL

the "corrupt" file has been fixed, several sources to download the files from and several tutorials already online... 2.1 is real and working.... Good luck Devs with the new batch you have to work with. Hopefully this will be key to getting this challenge opened up!!! got 2.1, but I'm still wanting root too!

i told framework last night that the devs should just zip the lips, stay on their IRC, get it done, and announce it.

everyone likes getting news here and there but that just gives the negative nellies more fodder to talk crap with.

Probably a good idea, gets real old real quick when people start their whining and complaining, I just wanted to voice my support to them and wish all the more luck... I'm no programer, so I will wait paitently for them to do their magic....

LMAO...You almost made coffee come out my nose!
Yeah I have loaded it up on my Eris, the 2.1 that is.
It is crazy that all this comes from one rogue employee!

Yeah dont get your hope up or down guys.
Its a prettty rough situation right now.
My advice to everyone would to be a bit guarded and skeptical.
If you want the real answers, or updates, head over and ask one of the proven Devs and I am sure they will be happy to pass any news along to you.

@acidbath did you do the update or no. If so how is it.
Also can someone that has done the update go into more detail about the steps after the hboot part. This is my first root on a andriod. But blackberry OS dev I have done.

Yes, I have done the update.
And its not "Root" its an "Update", just a FYI for you :)
There are complete instructions over on page 8 or 10 I believe in the XDA thread for the 2.1 leak.

"Place PB00IMG.zip onto your phones SD card
make sure phone is off and hold Power button and Call Button.
the menu opens quickly press the power key over the hboot option.
Follow the instructions onscreen to install the update. the phone will reboot a few times.

The phone will wipe all user data the sd card is untouched

Well, the devs seemed a bit more optimistic in the thread on xda where the file was first leaked. I'm sure they'll get it down. Not sure how the guy patched the corrupt file, but it sounds difficult. But if they could do it within thirty minutes, I'm sure finding an exploit wont be too hard..for a developer.

Ok soo apparentely they are prretty much saying for us to update to 2.1 because they are saying that they are 99 percent sure that the root will not happen on 1.5...
