Help 'Delete by selection' screen appearing when pressing backspace whilst writing a text

When I'm writing a text message on my HTC Desire S, sometimes when I go to press backspace/delete it will take me to the 'Delete by selection' screen (Where I can check what messages I want to delete from the particular number I'm trying to text) rather than just deleting the letters I have just typed.

When it takes me to that screen, pressing cancel, or the back softkey seems to only take me to that same screen over and over; I usually have to press cancel/back at least 10-20 times before it will then take me back to my message inbox. From there I have to retrieve the message I was writing from where it has saved itself as a draft. Sometimes this will happen several times per message, and sometimes not at all.

Since it saves the message I don't mind too much, but it's just such a pain having to try and get off the screen and back onto the message every time it happens.

I've searched settings to see if there's a shortcut to this that I'm accidentally pressing, that I could disable, but can't seem to find one. Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks.

Happening to me too. To get out of it I do the following four steps to get out of it:
-Home button
-Message Icon
-Current message
-Click on words for keyboard

Annoying, and I am unable to reproduce it, it just happens on occasion.

Is it possible to look at the system code for messaging?

My mate's Desire S has this problem also.. Drives Him mad!!

Exactly the same problem happens on my Desire S. Totally random and very annoying , I have a friend with an Incredible S and it has never happened to him so must be a Desire S specific problem.

If it is a bug with Android 2.3 how would we go about getting HTC to fix it?

Happens to me to all though it seems that if focus on hitting the delete/backspace button only it doesn't happen. If I accidently hit backspace + another button near it, it will cause the problem.

Yep, exactly the same thing happens on my Desire S. I thought it was a problem with SwiftKey, but it's obvious now that it's a bug with the phone. Has anyone contacted HTC about this yet?

Just tried the Gingerbread Keyboard and same thing happened again, all though it seems the problem is occuring more often now :(

My desire S does the same thing in landscape mode.

The operating system is terrible, its like they didnt do any testing before releasing the handset!!!

Yup its happening with my Desire S too and is driving me mad. I'm not even sure I need to press backspace plus one other button - pressing backspace alone seems to randomly cause the problem.

I'm also finding it awkward to put the charger connection into the phone - sometimes it goes in easily, other times its a struggle. I had a phone that did this before and the connector bit gave up way before the end of the contract and I was told it was my fault and therefore my problem!

Same problem here since I updated my HTC Desire HD to Gingerbread. Mine specifically triggers when I enter the HTC messages app in portrait mode, start to reply to a message, turn the phone to landscape and hit the backspace key...even if I have not typed anything yet. Very very annoying...hope someone finds a fix asap.

its happening with my HTC Incredible S as well...I seem to have figured out when it happens
1. Open messages and start a message in potrait mode
2. After partiallly entering the message switch to landscape mode
Now the first time you press backspace....it will cause delete
This wont happen if you start the message in landscape mode. This is HTC bug

I never type in portrait mode, only in landscape an I get the bug almost every time I try to text.

When I get the "delete by selection screen" bug I usually have to hit cancel 8-10 times before it will go back to the text I was writing. THEN I have to turn the screen to portrait mode and back to landscape mode again, before the keyboard will appear.
I need this bug like I need an infected scrotum.

This isn't a solution to the bug, but I have found that it isn't there if I use Handcent or ChompSMS...

Edit: I note that Organon already pointed this out above. Sorry for repeating...

A few days ago I messed around with some stuff trying to improve battery life, and I turned off the keyboard vibration thing and for some reason the bug only happens to me once in a while now. Before I was getting it almost every time I had to text but now it can go 10-15 texts before it happens, and sometimes a whole day without it.

I emailed HTC regarding this. They replied with the standard 'format your phone and all will be fixed'. They said if that doesn't solve the problem email back and they'll pass the problem on as it's not something they're aware of. I'm not going to factory reset my phone as I'm fairly confident it won't fix anything.

If anybody does want to try the factory reset, these are the instructions HTC gave me:

With the phone turned off, press and hold the Volume Down key.
Briefly press the Power key.
Wait for the screen with the 3 Android images to appear.
Press the Volume Down key twice to select CLEAR STORAGE.
Press the Power.
When asked to confirm, press Volume Up

What a load of crap, I wouldn't have bothered doing a factory reset either. I'm going to email them about it too. Since they seem to think it's not a common problem they probably haven't even started thinking about a fix

Same with my Desire HD. It happens every time I switch from portrait mode into landscape. If I start writing in landscape mode it's OK.

Yeah, I even posted a link to this thread in the email to show them it's a fairly widespread problem. Looking at other replies people have got they just send out that factory reset response as a solution to everything.
