Help 'Delete by selection' screen appearing when pressing backspace whilst writing a text

I just emailed them about the problem as well, I post the reply here when I get it. I think I'll try the factory reset within the next days. I really don't think it will solve anything though.

I got a reply from HTC about the problem and here is what they said to me (translated from Danish): "We are still looking into this problem and are currently working on a fix but as of now I can not say when this problem will be solved."

I have a HTC Desire S, and have felt like throwing my phone off the wall so many times with this problem. After reading this thread, i looked on the market forsmsapps, and found a free one, which replcates that of an ipod message app. I still prefer the original app that comes with the HTC. But i am going to use this one until an update comes out.

The app is called: Handcent SMS
Works relatively ok from what ive tested.

I'm SO glad it's not just me!
I've got an Incredible S and this problem seemed to occur when I got the Gingerbread update (certainly didn't notice it before then).
I pretty much always use landscape to do txting, as I can do it quicker (keys bigger, etc).
REALLY hope HTC get this fixed ASAP, its such a pain! :(

Did a factory reset and, as expected, it didn't help shit.
No surprise there then...

Your email response looks more hopeful anyway, atleast they're acknowledging the problem and looking for a fix. I've also emailed back to ask if they can pass the problem on and get a software patch out.

I have send my phone in for repair because of this bug/error and explained them what the problem was. I'll probably get it back with a notice saying that they did a factory reset.. Anyway I'll let you guys know when I get the phone back in a week or two.

They asked me to send mine in repair as well after I emailed about the problem. I havent replied because it's evidently a software problem so I don't know what they can do by sending it in for repair. Let me know though, I'd be interested to see what happens.

Gonna pick up my phone today after work, so I will probably have an answer for you tomorrow.

So I got my phone back yesterday from repair with a notice that said that they did a software update and it was not working OK. I of course was pretty skeptical about it and when I turned on my phone and checked the sofware version, it said 2.3.3... so not really an update if you ask me.
Anyway yesterday went fine with no sign of the "delete by selection" error, but lo and behold this morning it's back.
So I'm going to send back in for repair and also complain about the scratch on the glass someone has done to it, while it was in for repair.
To my understanding it's pretty hard to even make a scratch in the (gorilla) glass..

Btw I bought the phone through "3".

its happening with my HTC Incredible S as well...I seem to have figured out when it happens
1. Open messages and start a message in potrait mode
2. After partiallly entering the message switch to landscape mode
Now the first time you press backspace....it will cause delete
This wont happen if you start the message in landscape mode. This is HTC bug

Having same problem with Desire S, and can confirm that's when it seems to happen, at least to me anyway. Emailing HTC support to see what happens...

Got this reply:
"Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your Desire S

Regarding the issue with the Messaging application, I will raise an escalation right now to make the relevant department aware of it. Can I please take:

1. The software information of the phone: Home > menu > settings >a bout phone > software information

2. Just to confirm, is it the default Messaging app?"

same thing keeps happening to me! I rang htc and was also told to factory reset it but im glad i check on here first because i thought it would be a waste of time to reset it.

just emailed htc explaining the problem and telling them that people on this forum have already factory reset their phones and it doesnt work and they had obviously chosen to ignore what i put in the email and still suggest me to try a factory reset!?!? they clearly do not know how to fix it!

I was told they're 'escalating' the issue when I emailed (I included the link to this thread). Which presumably means they're looking for a fix - hopefully.

Well I too have been having this issue on my HTC Desire S, I haven't found a solution, but I have found a way to ensure it doesn't happen (not quite the same thing!)

After testing various things I've discovered it happens when the keyboard is active and the phone is tilted from portrait to landscape.

To stop this from occuring either:

A: Turn the phone on its side before entering edit mode (ie before keyboard appears)

B: If editing in portrait and decide you want to turn to Landscape mid edit... turn the keyboard off (Bottom left symbol(keyboard with a down arrow)) now turn the handset, tap the message to bring up the KB again and voila.

It aint perfect, but it becomes second nature with practice.

Hope this helps until a fix arrives.

Zenith.

^^ Thanks. I'll give this a try when I get my phone back from repair (the second repair).
Thinking about getting my money back if this bug is still there when I get it back, but the problem is I don't know what phone to get instead.

Just a small update: Got my phone back from repair Thursday (they had it for a month) and the f'ing bug/error is still there. Probably gonna return it Monday and claim my money back for this faulty phone.

I've been emailed by HTC support asking for a video clip of the bug...

*sigh*
Starting to think HTC may be completely incompetent.

One thing is for sure and that is that we the consumers have become beta-testers when it comes to phones and their sub-par software.

I just returned my phone for repair for the 3rd time and I will be getting a new Desire S. What I think is weird about this bug/error is that it seems not everybody with a Desire S has it.

This is unbelievable, I think they just don't care at HTC, "Quietly Brilliant"? more like "Quietly, we just don't give a ****"....This been going on for months, affecting thousands and they ask for a video? What next? Should we maybe form a sign in front of their office out of pissed off people saying: "NOW U BELIEVE US?" . Nothing brilliant about this company. Waiting for the fix or different phone, I wonder which one will come first...

^^ I totally agree with you. One thing phone companies can learn from Apple is not to release a new phone every other week and instead release a few that actually work and have been tried and testet before release.
