Desire HD vs Galaxy S

I'm currently on the fence about which phone to get out of the Desire HD and the Galaxy S, and I have seen others asking which is better, I have compiled a list of pros for each phone. Can anyone suggest any others?

Galaxy S Pros:

Slightly Faster (mainly GPU I believe) (though with lag bugs atm but set to be fixed)
FFC
Probably better Sound Quality (the HD SQ is unknown but I have heard the Galaxy S SQ is excellent the HD has a lot to live up to).
Super AMOLED display.
Lighter
Potentialy massive aftermarket community (released on all 4 major carriers in the US and selling incredibly well elsewhere).
Headphone slot on the top
Potential for extended battery is higher with a removeable back
Higher internal Memory.
Available now
Swype Pre-loaded
Gorilla glass screen.
More pocketable (not by a lot, but it is smaller).
Better Video quality (some Desire HD video captures have been uploaded on XDA, general consensus is that they are not that great).

Desire HD pros

Probably better camera (mexapixels don't mean everything so we can't be sure)
Bigger screen
Regular pixel config not pentile matrix like on SAmoled.
Sense = better than Touchwiz
New sense features on top of this.
Nicer build quality.
Boot time
Made by a more reliable company.
Better GPS (presumably)
Extra Ram
Notification light (I think).
Camera Flash.
Potentially faster Data (14.4 Mbps down 5.76 up)

Pros of Both

Hot-swappable.

Unknowns

Battery life is unknown, SLCD may drain less battery but bigger screen + smaller battery.

Edit:updated with info provided by others

I can indeed confirm the Desire HD has a hot-swappable SD card as well.

If you look here you can see that the MicroSD card is accessible. The battery is actually accessed from the side of the device, not the bottom. I'll try find the pic.

edit: found it!

I have the EVO and the Galaxy Fascinate, and I must say its tuff to say which is better. IMHO, HTC is the Android king right now.

How much better is the GPU?

The GPU is definitely better but i'm not sure by how much, it's apparently using a newer graphics core than previous snapdragon based phones but i'm not sure if it's true or not.

Again the CPU is not the same version as the Nexus One/Desire according to rumours so unsure how they compare or if it's even true. :D

Thanks! It's always bugged me that more phones don't do this.

This may or may not help much, but here goes (plus just registered and wanted to post something:)):-

My current phone is the Galaxy S which is my first Android phone, coming from a long line of Nokia smartphones.

I'm missing built in FM transmitter a little, and Flash for the browser as well as the camera.
Browser flash is obviously coming in Froyo, and I can live without the FM transmitter - BUT now looking at the Desire HD as it has the camera flash as well as 8mp.

Think I may end up with both, and then keep whichever one I prefer, and sell the other one on Ebay . . . .

Its got its pros and cons, but overall Galaxy S is the best smartphone I've ever used overall (games'n'apps contribute to this) - but the Desire HD specs have got me wondering - especially with the camera flash.

Last thought the Galaxy 5mp camera is not as good as the Nokia 5mp camera's IMHO :(

PS does anyone know if the Desire HD has got TV out, it was'nt listed in the Galaxy S specs originally - but is there all the same (standard via 3.5mm jack and HD via DLNA - thanks to NZtechfreak for that, who I see on here as well - Hi NZ).

1 GHz Qualcomm MSM 8255

Its a newer cpu as mentioned above

Quote from Endgadget today..

Meanwhile, the Desire HD is apparently putting up some hardcore benchmark scores on the strength of its updated Snapdragon MSM8255 processor, posting a Quadrant score of nearly 2,000 -- about two-thirds better than a Froyo equipped Nexus One. The dumped ROM is already online, so feel free to start digging through it... and if you somehow have a prototype Desire HD lying around, all the better.

Sheesh, 2000 on Quadrant? Wonder what it would get under An3Dbench- highest in that I've heard of was 7300 on an EVO 4G.

Hi Scooby!

The other unknown here will be how the audio quality is for listening to music... Thats a biggy for me, because the GS SQ is perfect...

I forgot this, I had heard audio quality was excellent, I'm going to tentatively add this to Galaxy S pros until we know more about the Desire HD audio. Also adding higher video quality to the S for now as indicated by the uploads in this thread.

i made a thread asking about desire vs galaxy i suppose this is the next one up

ive pre ordered an hd now hope i made the right choice

Not sure where you got the idea that Galaxy S has a better CPU. They both use ARM Cortex A8 based design. Both running at 1GHz, both uses 45nm, the difference will be negligible.

Also, the GPU gap between Hummingbird and Snapdragon has been reduced. We will have to see how Adreno 205 performs in MSM8255, but the early indications are pretty interesting!

The snapdragon is not a Cortex A8, it's a custom design. I first tought that it was a shrink of the 65nm CPU in the Nexus One. A shrink from 65 to 45nm doesn't improve performance (it saves more power however). It seems that they also added a few optimizations so we will see.

Actually 1st gen Snapdragon was based on Cortex A8 with some customization of their own. Qualcomm claims small improvement over other Cortex A8 based processors but so far, I don't see it. :)

And yes, 2nd gen Snapdragon found here is just a shrink without adding any additional cache. So CPU core performance-wise, it should be about the same. Looks like most of the improvements happened outside of CPU core.

The OMAP and the Hummingbird are both faster than the Snapdragon at the same clock speed (1 GHz) from what I read.

So if this is true that the new snapdragon isn't faster than the old one, the Galaxy S will still be faster than the Desire HD. Of course Android 2.2 gives a performance advantage however. So the Desire HD would win against the current Galaxy S, because the update to 2.2 isn't out yet.
