Root Desire Root Guide For Newbies

you can create a goldcard in your phone (i did)

connect it via the htc sync option for the first part - issuing the adb command to get the long hex code

then after you have your goldcard.img from revskills, switch to disk drive mode for hex editing

[edit] oh dear, the revskills page no longer creates goldcard images for free...
Paul is looking into purchasing and providing the goldcard creation on Modaco

Great! I've got my reversed hex number. One step forward!

What ones are non-generic? I have an orange phone.

Just when things were becoming less muddy, a wave comes in!

Yours would be non-generic, it has orange branded firmware. Generic ones would just have the default HTC firmware on.

But the next stage is not available yet, getting the ISO. They removed it as mentioned by Pyr0x64 above :(

1: Yes this will remove that branding, and all branding on the software actually. Hovever, it is my knowledge that the German Desure handset ships with a 0.8 version of the bootloader, in which case this guide will not work for you. Please check using the process I describe in the post.
2: OTA stands for Over The Air, and is a method of sending the update via the phones internet. Both HTC and carriers use this method.
2.1: You cannot accept official OTA updates after using this method, but can install the official updates via HTC website (HTC provide a website based way of updating for every OTA update available)
2.2: Definitely.
2.3: See above
2.4: see above :p
3: The firmware you will get by applying this root process is exactly hte same as you would have with an unbranded HTC Desire. For instance if you bought an unlocked version not from a carrier. As I had an unbranded phone before this process, my phone and HTC Sense is exactly the same post-root as pre-root.

On hold for a while then...

Thanks for the answers!

I've read the tutorial and checked the boot-loader before and mine is definitely 0.75.0000 ! :) :) :) (bought at T-Mobile Germany, it is just branded, not SIM-Locked)

We had to close the goldcard generator due to several hack attempts.
After web server security updates, it will be back online.

My site is back up again now, sorry about that! Apparently the usage has jumped up a lot recently, and I went over their usage limits (they want me to upgrade to dedicated plan, as if I can afford that!!!)

Anyway have fun :p
