Root Desire Root Guide For Newbies

Hi Lekky, rooted using your method step by step but when I go to recovery theres no custom recovery? Want to backup via recovery menu.
 
so do u only need a gold card if your phone isnt unlocked? mine is unlocked to any network so i take it i dont need a gold card?
 
I have an O2 Desire, which I would imagine is unlocked as O2 never lock their phones down to a SIM or network, but I am little confused over the process.

I tried to root the other day following Modaco r6 as I have HBoot 0.80 and Software 1.20.207.3 but kept failing with the Gold Card part.

Now from reading a few things I may not need a gold card, so does this mean I can jump into Lekky's guide at say Section 4 or even 5.

I'm not interested in the extra Apps2SD method but do want to try Froyo with it's native Apps2SD as I'm not really running out of space on my phone.

And is there an easy way to tell if it's rooted once done.

Anyone help out a confused rooter.
 
I just used Lekkys guide from start to finish and worked perfectly, just follow it exactly step for step. Also check the gold card sticky. When you open your menu you will see a superuser permissions icon if its rooted.

unlocked is different to unbranded, so be careful. Unlocked means you can use it on any network, unbranded means it contains the HTC firmware, not modified by any operator.

a phone can be unlocked and branded, but not locked and branded.

Does it contain anything about O2 on the phone, including the boot up image? If not it is likely unbranded. Don't use my guide if you are on bootloader 0.8, but you may be able to use the modaco guide without a goldcard, double check in the thread.

Loving this site, quite alot to take in on the rooting front..

Really want to do it with these instructions but i've got a bootloader of .80

Are there many differences in what I download to do this.

Any help appreciated.

Hey guys. Running a T mob Desire with HBOOT 0.75. While trying to create my goldcard I keep getting the error message device not found in cmd while trying to generate my cid. Any ideas. Wondering if it might be cos I'm using a slightly older micro sd card. Its 1gb so has plenty of capacity.

Turn on USB Debugging.
 
^^ I have already done that .... tried two custom ROMS and an rooted official one as well .... but it seems my phone does not like ROMS other than the OTA one, as its the only time it runs stable .... so I am back to OTA 2.2 after full circle ...... waiting for OTA 2.2 with 0.93 to be rooted......and it seems that we are getting there ....... just a matter of waiting couple of more days .

^^ It did actually .... as I was not aware of it, and I somehow missed THIS THREAD ......
Had to run in circles the whole night to get my official 2.1 RUU to bring my Desire back to life ....... did an OTA 2.2 after that and as I said been waiting since then for it to be rooted.....
