Root DETAILED Leak Root Tutorial

No, put it on your sd card and install it like any other app

what I meant was...I assume in the recovery console, where I normally flash a rom...it shows up as a .zip just like the roms. Do I flash it at that point, then flash a rom afterwards?

But are you saying go out to the market and download superuser the app?

Download the 2.1 or 2.0 superuser app from XDA for free, it is an .APK that can be installed without flashing. I believe it is in a folder when you download it, not sure though

Maybe I'm blind and didn't see it ... I'd guess my answer has to be somewhere in the forums but I didn't see it. Shouldn't the system info tell me somewhere what custom rom I have loaded? It currently says:

Firmware Version 2.1
Baseband Version 2.42.01.04.27
Kernel Version 2.6.29 zanfur@gandalf #46
Build Number 2.36.605.1 CL 165907 release-keys
Software Number 2.36.605.1
Browser Version WebKit 3.1
PRI Version 51920
ERI Version 5

I downloaded the ErisLightning 3.02 ROM and followed the instructions but how can I be sure that's what I actually have? And while I'm at it where can I look on the phone and see how fast the CPU is running and how can I adjust that speed now that I have a custom ROM and am rooted....I'm guessing setcpu or some such app...Thanks in advance...

I imagine it is up to the developer that made the ROM to identify it how they wish. From what I remember; for example, the Evil Eris ROM has the Firmware Version listed ais "Evil Eris 3.0". I am running the White Widow ROM; the Firmware Version is "2.1-Update 1" and there is an entry listed as "Mod version" which is "CyanogenMod5.0.8/White Widow 4.6". SetCPU is a nice free application for overclocking.

*EDIT* Looks like it might be a rooted RUU. I could be mistaken.

I put tainted vanilla 1.4 on...its fantastic. I like it better then evil eris and froyo. not because of style since it pretty much acts like the default eris, but speed. Its very snappy.

I did notice I had to go to 740mhz versus 766 because the browser was crashing on load. Even the market when using the search bar would crash.

Well now you know your breaking point :) I recommend creating a profile for screen off and setting it at something like 480/122 to have tremendous battery savings.

I think I just had an epifam.. epipham..... A BRILLIANT Thought.when I downloadd the sdk, I downloaded to my desktop. I Then created a folder and moved it to that folder. maybe I am not yping the right path when I attempt to update my drivers, and that is why adb wont recognize my device i am typing the android-sdk-windows-tools path and its telling me that it doesnt exist, when i know it does because i followed the instructions and can access the folders . does this make sence? i m thinking that i need to put the path to the desk top since thats where the sdk was downloaded to( which i of course do not remember. Im thinkin im going to delete every thing re download sdk htc everything, and try again not downloading it to desktop but a specific file. i know you are on a mac an i have windows xp , but you are alot smarter at this stuff than me lol think this might fix my issue? which is adb wont recognize phone.says adb is not a valid command yadda yadda lol

It should be c:\android-sdk-windows\tools rather than c:\android-sdk-windows-tools.

yep, I did that yesterday. so far so good.

Except the Corporate Calendar does a force close...not sure why. When I was on non-root, I was able to use ActiveSync, but tainted vanilla doesn't have it, so when connected through exchange (instead of active sync)...I can't get my calendar or easily enter my contacts email addresses.

Alright, so I've got an Eris running 2.1 and am trying to root through a mac. I've tried again and again the steps to root but I keep getting runinlinuxfromtools.sh: No such file or directory... The device is recognized when i do ./adb devices but I can't get past this point... any suggestions? I've downloaded and redownloaded the packages necessary with no such luck...

Are you running this exactly sh runinlinuxfromtools.sh ? Also did you extract the files from the folder once they were in the tools folder?

Yea (to both), I just tried again and the same thing happened... I've also tried unzipping before I dragged the hack file into the tools folder... Maybe I'm just confused on the steps cause some people seem to be able to do it right away... When I plug my eris in, before I can even select charge only (to finish the process), the drive shows up mounted on my desktop... I quickly dismount the drive and make sure the phone is charge only... would this make a difference? I feel like I'm so close, just caught on a minor hitch... doesn't help this is the first time for me

Try typing ./adb shell
before you enter the .sh command
some people are reporting that this works for their phone
