Root Did Metro do something recently to block tethering?

I'm gonna check this out. trying it right now... just so you know garden never worked for me. Only one that always worked for me was "Wireless Tether" wit h a green Wifi icon on the market.

Garden wifi was the only one that worked for me. Wireless tether looks like it runs on the same code, but the problem i have with it is i cant deactivate the tethering. Garden wifi i can.

really? I just click the grey wireless tether symbol that's in the middle of the screen to turn it off.

Yea didn't work for me. It would stay on. Maybe it was just that one time but I didn't try it again, I had to restart my phone

Ah, i vaguely remember something funny like that. After shutting it off, sometimes I just have to turn wifi off then back on again with the toggle button in the notification bar.

Does gardens support encryption and access control lists? (allowing only specific mac addresses). That's mainly my reason. So even if they guess your password they can't use your wifi. Not that I'd think regular people would do that. However shady businesses and possibly government agencies would because lately they've been over extending far too much into civilian's private lives. The U.S is becoming like london with cameras all over, except mostly digitally. Sorry to say but even google streetview trucks were doing this at one point.

Yes it does. I think they are based on the same code. They are the same in everyway except I can shut it down without a problem and it has a picture behind the green wifi symbol instead of just a black screen.

I was able to use "Wireless Tether" flawlessly, but then I exchanged my phone for a new one and now I can't get it to work at all. The phone is rooted and the app runs and everything looks fine, but no websites come through on my laptop. I tried messing with all the security features but nothing worked.

Anybody have an idea about how to fix this?

Thanks!

To answer your question. Yes, metorpcs did block tethering. Working for them I'll tell you it's kind of a drag but they have to control the bandwith some how.

What they will and offer soon is a unlimited tethering addon to your rate plan. (just like other carriers, gotta keep up in the feild).

How much right, don't know, will let you know when I know.

Otherwise, keep trying you might get through. As of for now, metro has block tethering.

hope this helps! :)

Open Garden is still working for me, but so far only my comp picks it up and connect. My buddy's tab wont even pick it up on a scan...

He needs to install an ad hoc fix to be able to pick up the phone. I installed one on my optimus and can connect to my esteem just fine.

You do not need to change your desktop browsers user agent. In fact doing so will cause your browser to display the mobile version of websites. I seriously doubt MetroPCS invested money into deep packet inspection (how they would detect the user agent), as that would likely bankrupt them. Besides, most people change the user agent on their phone to match a desktop browser (mobile sites suck).

Metro did invest in deep packet inspection. It was what blocked TRS-80 and I both in the Tampa market. Changing the UA on the desktop browser to a phone browser is what actually works for browsing. Otherwise without it we could only access facebook.com and google. Almost everything else came up blank. see thread http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-indulge/454393-solution-wi-fi-tethering-issues.html

I posted fixes for Firefox and Chrome, TRS-80 posted an opera.dll fix. After these methods were applied tethering works again in our market.

You can even use an agent string like Mozilla/5.0 (Ubuntu; X11; Linux x86_64; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0 which tiede posted and works and doesnt make mobile sites come up.

Deep packet inspection, really? Everyone was saying metro didn't have the resources I guess they stepped their game up! B) I don't mind paying for tethering though so nbd.

LOL at all you guys saying that they are blocking. I'm guessing most of you guys don't use linux. Because mine works perfectly fine and and on window7(on the same computer)all I get is facebook lol. check out my post on the other thread.

for you guys that say that it doesn't work... Works perfectly with my linux OS, however with Winblows all I can do is go on to facebook.com which is f'n crazy....
speeds will get 2000kbps.

and look up at the top right corner.

Did you read the upper posts? YES THEY ARE BLOCKING Facebook is open in Windows. In Linux you can navigate other sites because it has a different browser with different UA. Change the UA string in any other browser in Windows (IE includded) and you will be able to surf without problems.

Don't know if this will work for the Esteem or not, but the way I found around it was to load QPST and go to the M.IP tab and change the Tethered NAI from @modem.mymetro... to @aaai.mymetro....

I was able to tether with Windows/IE again without issue.

dany sorry if I offended you or sounded rude. But I was trying to make sense of how to fix this.
Well, on another note they are having the same problem over on the galaxy indulge forum:
http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...cking-wifi-tether-update-yes.html#post3579748

No offense demarjcd. We are here to share info and help each other. what you said is correct. We can surf the web using Linux and some other browsers but what metro is doing is blocking navigation based on the most common browsers UA.

where do you guys live? here in miami i'm able to use it with any device used as a client. I also don't see how deep packet inspection makes a difference. All wifi tetherig = this:

1 Network interface, IP: Phone network's
1 Wifi network interface, acting as an ad-hoc network (peer to peer wifi),
with a dchp server (Give you a local ip like 10.10.10.x),
configured to forward network requests from clients via NAT (Network address translation).

A network request from a client going outbound, is actually going out of your phone and is identified as such. Yes you can block certain "User Agents" that identify a browser technically, but like it was mentioned above, it's changeable. When chrome comes out for android then you won't even have to because if they block the chrome user agent it will not bode very well for them. Besides, this is a pretty stupid way of blocking wifi tethering technically since it's so easy to bypass.

Greetings from the Indulge forum, cousin Esteem users! :D

Actually, what tiede was able to figure out was that they seem to be blocking Windows based desktop user agents only. Use a Linux desktop UA, or a phone based UA that emulates a desktop one (like Dolphin browser in desktop mode, which emulates Mac), and you will be all set. That's why the Linux people never had any problems.

All the UA strings you need, as well as instructions and all the info on how we figured this out can be found in the two posts linked above (in our Indulge forum).
