'Dillo Hills [Development]

Runs great on Milestone with 2.2. Was initially choppy to the point of being unplayable, but smoothed right out when I backed the graphics down to low. The music is fantastic. Well done! I agree with a couple of the common critiques coming up in this thread: Game pace is too fast OR the hills are too steep, and response to pressing the screen to dive is delayed and weak. This is a great game, I look forward to seeing what else you have in store for it!

+1

Been following this thread since day 1 like many of you and I think Fex has produced a really great game. I tried the above on my Desire (Running GingerVillain) and had the same results, with no interaction I can get to the second island.

Other than that I haven't any issues with performance, even on 'high' setting.

Well done Fex!

It's not a bug, it's a feature! :)
Starts off easy.

hey fex, or anyone else who has the answer. i know right now my question is probably not up top of your priority list but im just curious to know if my device will ever be able to play dillo hills. i have the htc aria. and this question isnt just for me im asking it for any other phone that lacks AIR... will we ever be able to get this game or not? id rather lose all hope of it than be kept going with false hope so id appreciate an answer. thanks!

I know how u feel bro I can't get it either maybe fex will come throught for us. I have the LG vortex and same problem

well just an FYI...runs real smooth on my Atrix on High settings...still trying to get the hang of the game since I've never played Tiny Wings
Same here :) I'm not understanding how to control the poor Dillo...he crashes more than he rolls or even soars!

Really enjoying the game, but the people with 190,000+ scores kinda dissuade me from wanting to play again :P Typically, games with only high scores as a goal don't keep me coming back. I think I remember seeing achievements or something as a possible feature in the future, so that might help :)

Also, I find it pretty hard to always hit the top of the screen when I want to glide. I think having 2 buttons side by side at the bottom right of the screen would actually be better. I know I'd prefer that. When you need to make the decision to glide and dont hit high enough on the screen... that can end in disaster :(

When you get to zone 10 its kinda bugges : <
The Armadillo just dissapears and the only thing you can do is go back to the main menu, restart og whatever is in the pause menu.
Also, it doesn't save your highscore :(
Don't know if this is only for the armadillo or any other character tho.

Believe it or not, this is actually correct. :P

Right now, it is 100% impossible to lose Zone 1, even if you are playing the worst game of your life. In a sense, it acts as a "learn the ropes" level that is intended to be very forgiving for new players. (But don't tell the new players! :D)

At the same time, I think experienced players will still find Zone 1 to be one of the most important levels to perform well on: it offers a massive bounty of easy points if you can take advantage of the slopes/birds and get up to 5x happiness quickly!

we can only hope when Fex does decide to remake his app he doesn't touch the Unity engine, which also doesn't support the above devices, preventing us from playing a few of the best Android apps such as Rocket Bunnies and Pig Rush...gotta keep up with the technology, guys! 2 year commitments will be the end of us all!

I'm honestly still shocked to see so many companies sticking to 2-year commitment contracts. The way mobile technology is moving right now, I'd almost be afraid to sign a 6-month contract!

Unity's a pretty cool engine, but it's not something I'm really planning on diving into for a little while, and certainly not for games like these. The next thing I'll be learning is Objective C, but I couldn't say for sure when that will be. :)

THANKS for telling me :P I don't feel smart anymore. That's the only level I can pass. No wonder I died within the first 10 seconds of level 2

Try 3 years...3 phones later and I'm still on my contract...

Your phone does not have a processor powerful enough to run adobe air, you will not be able to run this game, this have been covered several times.

It would be really nice if the back button didn't just shut of the game?! I mean, it can be kind of easy to incidentally touch it, and in that case, you're f**ed! :p Is this a AIR-problem, or dillo hills "bug"? If you're going to do a sequal/whatever, please do not use AIR, it just has downsides like it's a performance hog, it's got stupid limitations and doesn't work on every device. Not that I notice those problems with my Optimus 2x, even on high settings, it's just i believe the game would rock even more with it's "own engine"

Hm, feels like I forgot something. :p Anyway, thanks for an awsome game fex, it really made my day when I saw it. :)

Saw you said it's going to come to more platforms, thats probably the only reason to use AIR really. But recompile isn't that hard either, if you aren't using alot of platform-dependent APIs ofc, which I cant see for this game. :p

EDIT: You really must fix that back button! :p I don't know why, but I press it ALL THE TIME! I must really, really have something wrong with me that compels me to do it. Back should pause the game IMO, but maybr I'm just stupid?

Bought Jer game Fexolio. Lotta fun, runs flawless on medium on my fascinate/froyo leak/superclean/voodoo. Almost almost perfect on high... just barely choppy.

Anyway thanks for the entertainment and thanks for publishing it for 99c.

Good luck making some cash!

Hahah, fear not! This is going to be fixed in the next patch, which may or may not be out tonight, depending on how a few other things go tonight. :)

Oh, thank god for that! Almost went crazy a while here. :p Then I must thank you again for a great game. :) Hopefully you'll make a sequel that's written in native C instead (and with some additions ofc) , when you feel this is polished enough. :) I for one though think this is crazy good to be done in such a short time. Some kind of leaderboard (+ back=pause) and were set! :D Or maybe you got some other game ideas first? Sorry if this been answerd, but the thread really has exploded sense friday. :p

OTHER things? And may these OTHER things have to do with a female of some sort (or a guy maybe, what do I know?)?

Remember that.

After putting out performance fires (or getting to the point where we know we're just not going to be able to optimize any more), web-enabled leaderboards, achievements, and unlockables/upgrades are the next thing on the list. :)

Improvements have been made! This is a 3* app currently. On my droid 2 global low settings work great, medium settings visual is great but there is a 1-3 second delay from when I touch the screen to then it registers, on high settings the visual is great but sped up (why?) and the controls don't register. I would give 4* but on initial launch the app froze at the select settings screen and I had to pull the battery. Keep up the good work!

A+A+A+A+A+A+A+A+A+ on the Droid 1. Once I updated i jumped into game, of course immediately putting on low settings ;) and was thoroughly impressed with the changes. once I was at zone 5 i did see a lag spike, to which it wasnt that bad just through me forward a few hills, nothing i couldnt recover from. But as I reached the end of zone 5 and started going down the hill I was then froze in place and the music still ran but my character didnt move. Game then went to "feedback" page after a minute of it sitting there. I hit the back button, unpaused the game (glad it kept where i was of me going down the hill) and went on to zone 6. messed up a few times on zone 6...hard to recover and get going again since hills are so small and close together. anyways didnt make it to zone 7. score of 135,038 :). Very good improvement. Will test out Droid X a little later :)

Latest version ran smooth on my DroidX in Medium graphics mode. So I then tried High graphics mode. OMG....it runs smooth in High mode too! Of course I haven't mastered the controls and gotten past Zone 2 yet, but so far it is lookin' good! Great job, fex!!!:cool::cool:

Maybe you guys should try reinstalling or updating AIR and/or rebooting the phone.. This really doesn't seems like a direct hardware/lag issue.

I have an underclocked EVO and it ran fine with no changes to the settings.

Awesome, I'm very glad to hear some of tonight's improvements have made a noticeable difference. I'm going to be testing on some coworkers' phones tomorrrow so I can see the improvements for myself, but I'm happy to hear that it's already helped a few more people enjoy the game.

Up until now, a lot of my efforts have been going into improving rendering speed for old devices, but now I'm going to start looking into the other end of the spectrum: high-end phones which seem to run the game fine, but experience high input latency. As I mentioned before, this is a very strange bug that I don't fully understand, and am having a very hard time reproducing. It seems to be the result of not having threaded operations in AIR, almost as if the high rendering framerate on advanced phones pushed input processing to the back of the line. I'm continuing to look into it, because I understand that it's a very big bug that has a huge impact on playability.

bug report:
new update (3/29)
htc incredible

after initial install of the game, it played the little tutorial popups and speech bubbles from the dillo. but only the first time playing through.

after update install, it happens every play. and when it gets to the "yaaaaaaaay!" speech bubble, it doesnt go away, it just follows the dillo, until you get near a rain cloud and it switches to "this rain might slow me down!" or something like that. then switches back to "yaaaaay!" when the rain cloud is gone. also didnt see much "choppiness" improvement from my device.

i did manage to score 266k though, haha

thanks for the hard work fex -from all of us

love the game! im addicted.
