'Dillo Hills [Development]

Does anyone else have a Sont Ericsson Xperia X10i? I can't find Dillo Hills on the market and it wont download on the online app store, god this is horrible, i need this game! Please help!

Unless you're rooted, all of the SE X10 models are running 2.1. Dillo Hills require you to have 2.2
PLEASE NOTE:
This game requires Android 2.2+, Adobe AIR, and GPU-accelerated rendering to run smoothly!

I started playing this game with the beta testing, and have played several different versions of it now, including the final product. The one thing that was consistent throughout was poor framerates and extreme lag.

I just took the plunge and put the leaked version of Gingerbread 2.3.3 onto my Droid X. I immediately downloaded Dillo Hills and Adobe Air just to see if it helped at all, and the improvements are great. I can now play without any noticeable lag and decent framerate on high resolution; the only problem is that is crashes occasionally. IMO, the rare crash is worth it to be able to actually play and enjoy the game as fex intended it to be.

So if your willing enough to take the chance, lose your root if you have it, and always deal with the rare chance of bricking your device, it's a good option. Also, Gingerbread is so sexy, smooth, and quick. Other than the free wifi tethering and not having to view the bloatware, i don't even miss my root! (If your not rooted, there's really no reason not to get the leaked gingerbread, other than the obvious risks; if your rooted, you'll lose some nice stuff, but i like a little change).

Just thought I'd led people who were desperate for an option know!!

BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP ALWAYS BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP CANT HAVE TOO MANY! :)

My 2 cents: The graphics/art is awesome. I don't really like the music. The concept of an armadillo rolling is much cooler than a bird gliding with the belly.

What (for me at least) are the major setbacks:

  1. The physics could be much better. Maybe if I hadn't played Tiny Wings, I wouldn't notice, but since I have and still do (my GF has an iPhone), I have to say that it is MUCH better than the current implementation of Dillo Hills. Especially when the character is soaring through the air (the rolling-on-the-hills parts is great).
  2. Performance. I have to set it on "Low" to run on my Nexus One :( And even in "Low" mode, the animation is not as smooth as I expected. I know mine is not the latest-generation Android phone, but I run games that seem to need the same or even higher graphics requirements (e.g.: Angry Birds, or some 3D games) and they run perfectly smooth.

For anyone who might be curious, here is the performance data we have collected so far:
I didn't see the Nexus One there. If you are interested, I am willing to collect perfomance data for you.

hey fex,

1st- awesome game.

ive read every post on this thread since it was started, and i know there have been very few, if any, reports i have read regarding performance on the htc incredible. so i'll put in my two cents-

totally unplayable on high and medium settings. it's like the game is lagging, but going a million miles an hour at the same time. weird sensation.

playable but still a little choppy on the low setting. (ie misses diamonds you clearly roll over, general choppiness, etc.)

i'd be willing to upload video of each setting if you would like.

i love the concept, and i've never played tiny wings, so i have no comparison there. keep up the good work, and ill keep practicing! (i suck) haha.

Hey Fex, i have an Evo 4G on HTC Sense 2.2. I didnt have too many problems last night with the 1.0.0 version, other than the generic problems going around (little lag, necessary to run on Low, no multitasking capability). I did notice that it took a long time to start up for me. My phone would eventually ask me to force close the application, and if I pressed 'Wait,' then it would start running. I downloaded the 1.0.3 version today, and noticed the lag is a bit better, but I can still feel there is some lag. I have to agree with all the others about how the armadillo moves to fast horizontally and not enough vertically. Regarding achievements, I know you plan on instituting that into the application as soon as you can. Otherwise, I want you to know that I too am in Indianapolis (north side) and would love to test out any version of Dillo Hills you are working on. I'm sure you already have Evo testers, but from what I've been reading, my experience so far with Dillo Hills on an Evo is turning out better than most others. Thanks again though, it is a great game and a heck of a lot of fun!! I'm sure the game is just going to get better and better.

Please keep the discussion on-topic, folks. If you see a post that bothers you, please use the "Report...." button to alert on of the forum staff. I can assure you that several of us are taking a close interest in this and other related threads. ;)

Same here I have LG vortex and can't find it all that comes up is annoying orange Soundboard. I haven't even listened to tht app and its annoying

playin on the htc desire 2.2 unbranded... used ALOT of memory and internal memory on the desire is grim as it is, requiring air aswell which is anothe 15mb ... untill can be stored to SD im ging to have to uninstall .... was a great play while i was playing though :)

I can kind of play it on medium, but I really have to put it on low graphics to get it to be near the performance it should be. The galaxy s phones have the best 3d and 2d performance of any phone out right now(besides certain brand new phones with dual-core) so I shouldn't have to put the settings that low to be playable. I am on froyo with adobe air installed.

IMHO, the developer should've waited to optimize this game more before putting it out. Its a really bad first impression for me.

If you start a game and just touch the screen to start pj movement, he can achieve island 2 playing alone... this need a balance!

PD: Sorry mod!

I know this has already been mentioned, but I would suggest that you learn the native the native android SDK. I've dabbled in flash, iOS and am now learning to code for android. I don't blame AIR for the lag considering the amount of time put into development and the varied amount of android devices, a bug was bound to show up. AIR Is memory intensive which is why you should make the switch once the bugs are fixed. Also it would allow you to push your game to more phones that haven't been updated to 2,2 or 2.3. Anyway I'm sure you know this, with the amount of people posting for the most part helpful advice. Kudos on the game and can't wait to experience the refinement in the coming updates and hopefully other games/apps that you release, I hope to release my game in about a year from now.

hey fex, or anyone else who has the answer. i know right now my question is probably not up top of your priority list but im just curious to know if my device will ever be able to play dillo hills. i have the htc aria. and this question isnt just for me im asking it for any other phone that lacks AIR... will we ever be able to get this game or not? id rather lose all hope of it than be kept going with false hope so id appreciate an answer. thanks!

The only way that pre-2.2 phones will be able to play is if the game is completely reprogrammed using a new programming language instead of AIR.

While this is not something that is completely out of the question (in fact, I'd really like to do it eventually), it's also something that is not near the top of my priority list - especially since I'm going to have to actually learn that new programming language before I could start rewriting anything.

For those of you who are stuck with a pre-2.2 device and not currently eligible for an upgrade, there are alternative platforms for you to play Dillo Hills coming soon.

thanks for the quick answer! and that sounds great, if this ever comes to the top of that priority list and you actually make it, ill be right there to play your game. thanks again!

Well the Dillo completely froze my Droid X(overclocked 1.3 Ghz) tonight on low graphics. Couldn't even reboot had to pull battery. Wow! Thought I could play through the problems but I guess not. Thanks for all though fex sure your working hard to improve.

well just an FYI...runs real smooth on my Atrix on High settings...still trying to get the hang of the game since I've never played Tiny Wings

Wow who knew my HTC Inspire 4G was such the powerhouse? I don't have any issues running the game on high res. I think the game is nicely done. I have not played Tiny Wings more than a couple times so I don't have a comparison between the two. As it stands on it's own it's a great time waster, which all phones games have to be to be successful.

Couple things I have noticed

- Zone 4 = really hard to beat if you make one mistake. Perhaps ramp the difficulty down a tad to make the overall flow/gameplay/difficulty matchup a bit better.

- Move the ad placement from top center to top right. When the ads obscure action on the screen (like the little text bubbles that popped up first time playing) it's a design failure in my eyes. Otherwise a full screen ad after dying with a skip button ( Like the words with friends system ) would also take care of the issue. The dillio seems to stay pretty central in relation to the screen and having the ad placed there as well clutters it up too much.

- Easter eggs & powerups. Bouncing two or three birds in a row should light something up, flash the screen, light my dillo on fire, etc. You've crafted a good game. Give me a reason other than high score to keep coming back and reward me for trying different things outside of the main mechanics. A trophy case would work well. Number of shrooms hit in one playthrough would make me dip down and hit that difficult shroom rather than gliding by the next three hills.

Keep up the good work. Sorry for the longish post. Just putting my thoughts out there.

Greg

Zone 4 isn't bad its zone 6 that's the problem I die on that zone every time i get to it.

And I get excellent performance on the motorola xoom there's no lag at all

the Aria not being able to run AIR has nothing to do with being a pre-2.2 device, it's the ARMv6 processor. because if your version of Android was preventing you from playing dillo hills...well, I mean, you'd just root your phone and install CM7, obviously. it's a hardware limitation much more than it is a software one.

anyways, it's hard to find out if your phone is ARMv6 or ARMv7 (which AIR requires) but luckily (well I wouldn't say luckily...) Firefox requires an armv7 processor as well and they've compiled a nice little list for us....

aria, legend, optimus, etc. and there's nothing we can really do about that. adobe isn't about to support older phones (what's the point? old tech, probably would run horribly anyways) so short of Fex remaking his entire application there's not much to be done. and we can only hope when Fex does decide to remake his app he doesn't touch the Unity engine, which also doesn't support the above devices, preventing us from playing a few of the best Android apps such as Rocket Bunnies and Pig Rush...gotta keep up with the technology, guys! 2 year commitments will be the end of us all!

+1

Been following this thread since day 1 like many of you and I think Fex has produced a really great game. I tried the above on my Desire (Running GingerVillain) and had the same results, with no interaction I can get to the second island.

Other than that I haven't any issues with performance, even on 'high' setting.

Well done Fex!

So... I'm not really sure that's a problem. Sure, you'll get to island 2, but you'll have a really poor score. Doesn't need balancing IMO.
