Root Ditching odex?

Rarewolf

Android Expert
I was wondering if stock apps can run without their odex counterparts?
For example: @email (stock email app)
I love it. But i feel the edox takes up so much space..
And i want to know if it is possible to run without the odex or if i would have to rewrite the app for it to not include an odex.

Edit: is the stock browser ROM specific?
Tried using CTMod's browser and it force closed on me.

I'm by no means the most in the know person here as far as this is concerned but from what I've read the odex is basically a part of the apk that's seperated from it and to deodex an apk you need to merge the odex file into the correct part of the apk.

see
What are ODEX files in Android? - Stack Overflow
for a pretty good explanation of odex

and

for a tutorial on manually deodexing an apk.

Otherwise MOST of the custom roms here are pre-deodexed.

Thanks necrotoxin.
I know most are deodexed, but almost of the ROMs kill my battery easily for some reason. So ive been sticking to stock and its been good to me. Life expectancy has gone from 3hrs to 8-9hrs.
I will look into these tutorials.
There's a new question about the stock browser.

odex's dont really take up much more space and allow faster booting. Main reason for deodexing is to ease the theming process. ;)

You can't simply delete the .odex there are parts of the system that call for the odex portion. The framework has to be edited to remove these calls.

If you are trying to use a deodexed browser on an odexed system, it will not work (and probably explains the FC's)

+1 odexes have to be converted to classes.dex & added to the apk.

Yeah to what they said.

If you run into problems i might be able to help. I just deodexed all of stock on my new phone and would be happy to help out at my first android home.
