Dlev ROM3 for KI4 out now

So what is causing your wakelocks when the screen is off, and wifi is also off Slug?
Barring a small handful, my wakelocks practically mirror the screen-on bar

So what is causing your wakelocks when the screen is off, and wifi is also off Slug?

On Saturday, most likely inbound PM notifications from Gmail and PhanApp. I was the "go-to guy" that day, for some reason. There were no abnormal percentages showing so whatever was happening was normal activity.

Interesting "find" today. I opened the Facebook for Android app to check on a couple of notifications, hit HOME, got on with life... an hour or so later checked incoming tweets and noticed that the battery had taken a caning. Turned out to be our old friend GPSLocationProvider in an almost-constant wakelock! As the FB app was the only thing used other than my standard background tasks I'm holding it responsible.

Anyone else using it and can confirm?

Which app is best for the wifi advanced settings (i cant see it in the normal settings)?

Its there!
menu>settings>wireless+networks>wifi settings>menu>advanced

@slug:
I'm currently on checkROM Rev, and I'm not on facebook at all (i loathe the thing!!!) at all so cant help you there butty.

Hi guys, and I hope that someone can make a few minutes to assist a newbie. since very recent I am running a SGS2, with rooted stock 2.3.3, and time to get the OS up to date. Have been browsing the different custom ROMS for a few weeks, and the one fitting me best is the new DlevROM v3.1. I am however stuck with the installation. As someone remarked, the AMAZING GUIDE BY ZEROXTREME is given for version 1.2. I understand that I have to place the .zip on SD-root, boot into CWM recovery, do a full wipe, and flash the zip.
But then. Is it worth while installing the Samsung_Apps_Addon.zip?
Do I have to reinstall the CWM app, as described for 1.2? A CF version is recommended, which is however KH3 based.
(if I have ROM Manager installed then things should be ok. Right?)
Do I in addition have to install a kernel in order to get rid of the yellow triangle?

And what about the aps? 99% of my aps are installed on the SD, so should not be lost, but will they after the clean system install still be linked into the system?

I know. Many questions which may all sound stupid to y'all. But please, if someone can give me a hint of how to proceed, I greatly appreciate it.

Correct. :)

That depends on whether you find any of the Samsung Apps useful. ;)

Download this CF-Root KI4 package and follow the same instructions. It's a 2.3.5 kernel and will reinstall the CWM app and also includes the latest su binary and Superuser Permissions app.

(if I have ROM Manager installed then things should be ok. Right?)
Wrong. Always use CWM for anything recovery-related, or reboot into the recovery image.

Do I in addition have to install a kernel in order to get rid of the yellow triangle?
Either flashing a stock kernel or a USB jig will remove the warning, but I gave up doing so months ago as imho it's more hassle than it's worth for a simple cosmetic thing.

Tbh I don't know. The wipe will remove all traces of them (obviously) and they'll have to be reinstalled, but existing settings and data should be picked up.

HTH

Great !!! Thanks for sharing, and we'll give it a try.
However a few new questions come up. What is the difference between the CWM ap and the CWM included in the ROM Manager? I already searched the Android market, but no trace of the stand-alone CWM. And, if I reinstall the ROM manager, why am I not OK?
Regarding the CF-root KI4 package, this will overwrite the kernel which is already included in the Dlev ROM. Is it the same kernel and what is the reason for doing this?

Thanks again.

CWM is a version of the ROM Manager code modified to work correctly with the Samsung kernel and or/partition scheme. I've never discovered exactly what makes this necessary but other Samsung handsets appear to have similar issues.

I already searched the Android market, but no trace of the stand-alone CWM.

Chainfire's GS2 version is only available in the CF-Root packages afaik.

if I reinstall the ROM manager, why am I not OK?

Reinstalling ROM Manager isn't a problem, but booting into recovery (or performing backup/restore operations) can be unreliable.

No.

and what is the reason for doing this?

To reinstall the CWM app and the latest root-related binary files. Once that's done, if you open the ROM *.zip package with WinZip or similar you'll find a file named zImage; copy that to your handset and use the "Flash kernel" option in CWM to restore the original kernel.

Wow, I am learning lots of new stuff here, and is great that we can base ourselves on other's experience. What I find a shame with the open source OS is that almost nothing is documented with as result that many aps are used inefficiently or not up to their limit. It would almost make sense to take initiative for a new site, which reviews, compares and explains everything known about the aps (and ROMs for that matter).

One last question, the data backup. I have Platinum Backup and MyBackup Pro (with root permissions) available. I use the MyBackup regularly, but have never use Platimum, Is this backup more complete, or what is the advantage?

Thanks a lot !!!

A bit "off topic" if you will forgive me for saying so.

You could start a new thread on this subject in the Galaxy S2 forum here:-

Personally, the app of choice for back-up's on rooted phones is neither of the two you mention but rather Titanium Back-up Pro which offers the most comprehensive range of back-up and restore.

I doesnt seems like Dlev is going to do a KJ? release, as he does not consider the J version of the firmware to be any better than his current KI4 offering.

I wouldnt be surprised if we dont see anything new from Delv for a while, perhaps until ICS starts filtering through, but as I understand, the source release of ICS will only be something for CM to get their teeth into as it is AOSP source, and not Samsung.

So maybe KK or KL will be the next thing for us to look forward to from this great ROM.

Thanks guys. Will start the new topic, and my apologies, I was not talking about platinum, but titanium. Will give it a try.

Not very good news about Dlev, although all the post which I read seem to be very positive. Any other recommendations for a ROM? Well, that may be off topic too.
Thanks anyway.

"Slug" mentioned yesterday the issue with ROM manager on an sgs2, and as recommended I installed the CWM app. Now however the question if I should trash ROM manager, or if I should keep both active. Any recommendations?

I suppose not entirely unexpected but a shame nonetheless. I wonder if we will see more of this with other developers who, perhaps, want to devote more time to I.C.S..

I'm hoping that samsung release ICS before CM :D
CM will no doubt be buggy as hell and lack features.

I second your sentiment steslatt.

No, this is definitely the place for rooting and ROM's geoff2011.

There is no right or wrong ROM to use. Just one that suits you. That's the nice thing about Android... the variety and choice that it offers to users.

A good place to start is the forum sticky entitled, "Samsung Galaxy S2 Root Guide"

http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...-guide-updated-09-15am-gmt-nov-02-2011-a.html

which contains, "Custom ROM Discussion". This covers most of the popular ROM's out at the moment and, in some cases, lists their pro's and con's.

Also, under the section, "Mods/Tweaks etc." is a section devoted to kernels that may prove useful.

"Slug" mentioned yesterday the issue with ROM manager on an sgs2, and as recommended I installed the CWM app. Now however the question if I should trash ROM manager, or if I should keep both active. Any recommendations?

No harm in keeping both. Particularly if you were to go for the popular CyanogenMod ROM, CM7 which ROM Manager supports.

I suppose not entirely unexpected but a shame nonetheless.

There's a hell of a lot of work involved; each new ROM has to be decompiled, deodexed, stripped/optimised, completely themed, recompiled, repackaged and signed.... and that's all before it can be tested.

With the rate at which Samsung are churning out updated builds for their various network partners and regional markets, it's a case of diminishing returns anyway. Last weeks build may in fact be no different to another from last month, other than it was finalised a few weeks later. The actual code may have been fixed for much longer.

Hi, I just flashed the DlevRom 3.1. Working great, very stable.
Thanks everyone for the support in setting this step. My procedure:
1. Backup with Titanium
2. Flash Dlev ROM using CWM
3. Flash CF_root KI4 using Odin to regain CWM
4. Flash original kernel

Is too soon confirm, but I do have the impression that I have a battery drain, worse than with my 2.3.3. In 2 hours, screen dimmed, Wifi and GPS active, I lost 30% of battery power. Anyone has had similar symptoms?

That's not unusual after changing the ROM. Give it a full power-off charge overnight, then pop the battery out for a couple of minutes prior to restarting normally. You should find the 'fuel gauge' a bit more reliable after that.

Great. Will give a try.
Yesterday, I also configured the SetCPU voltage control, 850 m for 100 ... 500 MHz, 875 for 500 - 800 MHz, 975m for 800 - 1000 MHz, 1075 mV for 1 - 1.2 GHz and 1250m for 1.2 GHz+. didn't notice much difference in battery drain. Anyone has better values?
