Root Do I need ROM Manager?

MaPMaKaR

Newbie
I'm going kinda slow with this... I've got my DX rooted ok and I want to try flashing the ROM but I havn't been able to make a back-up. I downloaded DroidXBoostrap.zip but don't know what to do with it since it's not a .apk. I downloaded ROM Manager and clicked Backup Current ROM but all it does is reboot my phone. I clicked on Reboot into Recovery but it just rebooted to the usual looking screens. What am I missing? Is ROM Manager any good? Do I need DroidXBootstrap if I have ROM Manager? Do they work together? Do they work together? Are they do the same thing (redundant)? I've read what I can find in this forum but am still a bit confused. Will someone please shed some light? Thanks! :D

I have rom manager and it did not wok for me, I bought bootstrap loaded it to my SD. Opened up astro file manager and launch it. It is a great program. Then go to YouTube and search for dx custom Rom. There is a real good tutorial On how to do it. Also YouTube bootloader. Took me about 10 minutes to load liberty last night. Real easy and create a stock rooted back up

ROM Manager is a UI for Clockwork Recovery. On the X CWR, Bootstrapper and Rom Manager all work together. In Rom manager, tap on "flash clockworkmod recovery" and select Droid X. Once its flashed you can use bootstrapper to reboot into the custom recovery and install ROMs/themes etc.

The only real benefit I got out of ROM Manager was the ability to rename the backups I create using clockwork. With that said, I have stopped using ROM Manager and just use Root Explorer to rename my backups, so I currently do not use ROM Manager.

If your Bootstrapper download was a zip file then unzip it and locate the apk file. Put that on your sd card, open Menu, Settings, Applications and enable installing non-Market Applications. Navigate to the Bootstrapper apk file using Astro or Root Explorer and a pop up window will ask if you want to launch the installer. Select yes and install Bootstrapper.

...unzip it and locate the apk file...
There is no apk file in there. I think I must have downloaded the code? I guess I'll have to pay for it on the Market. Isn't there a way to get this done without paying for apps? I guess rooting and custom ROMs are just another way for devs to make money. :o

Ya I guess $2 is not too much to ask for the bootstrapper. I went ahead and paid for ROM Manager Premium as well. ;) Now I've just got to learn what to do with it.

While I don't have the X, my understanding is this.
You install bootstrap, leave it installed then run ROM Manager. With strap installed, you are now able to reboot into recovery to make your backups then install your ROMs.
You're home free man, run it!

While I agree you should go ahead and drop a couple bucks to help the man out for his hard work, he does link to free downloads.

My Brain Hurts: Droid X Recovery (and Droid 2 too!)
That "free download" is very unhelpful because it is a .zip file. No one seems to be able to tell me what to do with it. That's one of the questions in my original post and I've been asking around in other threads too and nobody knows. Even though I have paid for the .apk now I sure would like to know out of curiosity what in the heck do with the .zip

I kind of skimmed through all the posts, and not sure the whole question was answered.

I will answer one part of the question though, if you have bootstrapper installed, you don't need ROM Manager at all :D

And the link that SinfulDragon posted should work just fine.

Thanks bouchigo and SinfulDragon that's helpful info but the link is to a file called DroidXBootstrap.ZIP! HOW DO I INSTALL IT? There is NO .apk included.

I'm lost on why the link would be pointing you to a zip, I hold the mouse over the second link I posted and it says apk, just DL it again, apk....... feel free to PM me your email addy and I'll just email you the apk LOL

Yes, SinfulDragon, I see what you mean. When I mouseover it does say .apk but then when I click on it it downloads .zip. Anyway I'm guessing that the zip file contains the code. IF I was a developer I would probably know what to do with it but alas, I am but a noob. :(

It's not a zip file. I downloaded it earlier to make sure....and it was in fact an apk file.

Check your PM.

If your using windows, it may be a problem with window's file extension naming..

Well when I download it from any of several windows computers it is always a .ZIP :( BUT when I type the URL into my phone's browser the .APK downloads and installs "as advertised". It's not just a simple matter of file extension naming either because I changed the file extension of the .ZIP in Window to .APK and it did not work. The files contained in the .ZIP are exactly what gets installed into /system when I run the .APK  ...interesting. I would like to learn more about what's up with all this but for now the important thing is that (with your help) I got the app installed and working on my DX (for free) and am ready for fun with custom ROMs. :D
