Help Do I need to explictly kill processes?

I open a few apps and then when I am done with them I close them out but in the Application manager I see them still running. Some processes and services like "Amazon MP3" are running even if I didn't explictly start them. If I kill them they re-appear after a while on their own.

I would like to optimize my phone for optimum battery life and NOT run any processes or services that I do not want. I also would like to completely terminate any app that I close.

For instance, once I close the Redbox app the process should not show up as running.

In iOS almost all apps are suspended when closed so they are not active. Suspended apps are removed from memory by the memory manager when needed or when the user "swipes them off" using the Task viewer. This algorithm means on iOS opening and closing apps does not result in needlessly running apps.

On the Note 3 I long press the home button and get a similar screen of running apps that I can swipe off but that does nothing, I still see them as running in the App manager. It seems like this screen is useless.

Anyone care to clarify what the issue is with Android? It seems like the process management is not optimized for battery life if apps are left to run when the user has chosen to close them.

i have never worried about apps running in the background unless there is a battery drain issue. for me the note 3 has been amazing battery life that i do not worry about it.

i see no reason to kill anything unless as stated by Benjie, you have something misbehaving.

Greenify will auto-hibernate any app you designate. You do have to be rooted to use Greenify though I believe. Honestly, the N3 is a beast - and battery life is amazing - not sure Greenify or killing apps is even needed. I do use Greenify, but probably don't need to.

Android will manage the apps and close them itself when resources need the space.

Very occssionally I might get an app that slows the phone - good opportunity to restart it and clear everything out.
