Accessories Do we need a screen protector?

I will make this easy for all of you. Get one. And take a quick read at my thread. It has more details on the "accident"

"Figured I would post some shots of the damage. It looks worse from different angles. I should have taken one with the screen actually on. When it is on it looks not as bad in some ways but worse in others. For example if it is a screen with a lot of dark colors you hardly notice it is there, but as soon as whites or bright colors come into play, the crack catches them and the whole entire crack looks like a rainbow.

I know from the pictures it looks like a long deep scratch, but it is a crack. you can't even feel it when you rub your fingers across it unless you actually use your fingernail, and even then it is just barely."

Can you put a pic with the screen lit?
Damn I still cannot believe it.
I do have to wonder in your case how much a .5mm thick piece of polymer would help. The impact point of your crack seems like it was a forceful impact, or you got the worst luck or both

Me too. Maybe, if there was a particular screen protector that was a bit thicker/stronger and applied itself with a real strong/sticky adhesive...

It is a deep small scratch.

Here is the only conclusion I can come up with that makes any logical sense to me taking into consideration how short and "not hard" the drop/fall/landing was. I honestly picked up my phone expecting to just blow it off and wipe it down with my microfiber cloth that i keep on me to get rid of the prints.

Anyways on to the theory.

When i dropped it, what i am assuming must have happened, in combination with the bad luck, was that it fell flat on its face, and when it did, there must have been something small, a pebble or some really small object on the ground that stuck up off the ground enough that all of the force, even what little of it there was, was transferred initially to that one particular spot on the screen, causing the scratch, and then that force had to go somewhere, which caused the crack.

Kind of like picture standing on a bed of needles, it would hurt, but you could do it. Now picture standing on one needle per foot. The needle would pierce through your foot because of the amount of pressure being applied to such a small surface area, and it wouldn't take much pressure to do so.

In my head it is either that that happened or this phone is as durable as mechanical pencil lead.

I don't know what's more painful: Those pictures or picturing a needle going through my foot.

Yeah, pretty much what I had in mind when I looked at it again and saw that scuff...

Me too!! Hope you have insurance ...

I actually made a bed of nails once for a high school science project. It was the real deal and we all lied down on it in class. Wasn't "comfy" but it worked and distributed the force just fine.

But like you said, OP, push on a nail or two with that much force and it will go right through your skin, or possibly concentrate enough force in a precise point to crack your otherwise strong screen.

It was hard to get the camera to capture what it actually looks like so here it is i guess to give you an idea of what it kind of looks like. How it looks though depends on what is on the screen and what angle you are looking at it from.

The pictures are big for the fact it was hard to see on the smaller sizes.

Yeah again and as you said, depending on the angle its either pretty darn bad or not that terrible
 
Not to discount Peeping tom's pleas...

But, I am using the clear gloss case and no screen protection. I believe in Gorilla Glass. I had the Droid 1 and rocked it the same way, case but no screen protection for almost a year still looks great. The Fascinate was naked for about a week but wanted something to give a lip on the front so I could place the phone face down on tables etc.
 
I hear you, I am just a little paranoid about the screen. I just got the free StealthGuard screen protector and it sucks as well. Its very flimsy and a pain to apply. I actually had fingerprints on the sticky side, so there are built in fingerprints on my screen protector. FAIL! Still looking for that hard glossy screen protector I want.

I just ordered that baby for the BACK. I will probably run the front naked, too, but the back is plastic and will scratch easily. There's no way I'd put a stealth guard, invisishield, or any RUBBERY crap on this heavenly screen. Seriously, that would be like getting a "coupon special" Maaco paint job on your brand new Ferrari.

3 days after owning one.. small scratch on screen... now has screen protector, and I don't even notice the protector is on there
 
Well, after 3 weeks, I got a few scratches after dropping my phone in my house. I do have a case but I also have limestone tiles. Only one is noticeable b/c of the rainbow look, but its really minute. I would have to make a real effort to notice it. The other scratches you can't even tell unless you look at it from an angle when the screen is off...thank god.

Whats funny is when I had a iPhone 3G, I never used a screen protector. I did have scratches. But this screen is too gorgeous to let it et scratched. So I order the Realook screen protector last night. I will follow up with a review.
