Do You Text & Drive?

It is illegal to talk or text here in Washington, and guess what... I see Pigs driving and talking on the phone more than anyone else. Go figure, they usually think they are above the law, because in reality they usually are

Actually, police officers are considered to have "special driving training" and are allowed to talk on their cell phones while driving. So technically, they aren't doing anything wrong.

Why would a regular traffic or beat cop need to use their cell phone tho... They have their cb for work related stuff.

Cops haven't used the "CB" radios for 20+ years!
For real? so they just use cell phones? I have not ran into a cop in a while.

I think i might be using the wrong term in "cb" but they have their little staticy radios they wear on their shoulders while walking around.

They have radios. Just aren't CB's. CB is ancient technology in the 2way radio market.
Ah ok then. Well they have their little radios. I dont see why any regular cop needs to be cruising around on a cell phone despite their "driving training."

Regardless, no law is going to work unless it is for everyone, no exceptions. As Lunatic pointed out, they can ban bus drivers from using cell phones but that is not going to stop regular motorists from slamming into the bus while texting..

Nope.

I used to text at stoplights (like some have mentioned) but it became highly, highly illegal here in BC and I'd rather not pay the ridiculous fines ($170 and 3 points. Over 6 points = auto suspension for min 3 months).

Wow... that's rough...

Is that for anyone or just people under 18?

Oh and just a note on the third or fourth topic of this thread. Bus drivers are banned from texting nationwide. All commercial drivers are banned from texting while driving from the FMCSA. It's a $2500 fine if caught!

The driver who drives the shuttle to campus from the lots at my university talks and texts while he drives. Usually he wait until he is stopped, but not always...

Anyone.

The only difference between ages is that this law doesn't just apply to cellphones but any time of electronic medium (except GPS and Bluetooth hedsets and some commercial handset radio tools for truckers and such) if the device in question is not capable of texting/dialing when you are caught it's just a fine, unless you are in the Graduated License Program or 'New Driver'.

Other devices include Nintendo DS, PSP etc. So if you're caught with a PSP (for example) and are not a new driver you just get a fine.

It also bans things like DVD viewers and such:

A person may not have a television image displayed within view of
that driver unless the image displays pictures, information or data
solely designed to assist the driver in the safe operation of the
vehicle or the safety and security of its load or its passengers.
The device must be installed so that it is securely fixed to the motor
vehicle and in a manner that does not obstruct the driver

Not only no but HAY-ELL NO to the OP's original question! I've even told my co-workers to not bother calling me while I'm driving as I don't want to have figure out their problems in a moving vehicle. All it takes is one mistake...

Well, when I created this thread I had no idea it would go down the road it has lol...

Did someone say MCATDTDROID has been banned? Can't say I'm saddened by that, I was rather surprised by his attitude...

This is something I've discussed with a few people offline, most of whom denied using their phones while driving at first, but later admitted it... They all said they'd change their minds once it got to the bit with the baby in the video...

I text and drive all the time... I drive a doorless jeep and can not hear or talk on the phone while driving 65 mph.... add to that I'm have hearing problems... that leaves me 2 options, don't text (and I have no desire for that) or text while driving.

sorry, but the quality and type of hooch I go after.... waiting around til I stop is not a viable option.

I used to text while driving when I had a simple flip phone. it was slender, and I could hit everything easily with my thumb all using one hand. I also knew where every letter in the alpha-numeric order...so I rarely ever had to look away from the road.

My HTC EVO is harder to use with just one hand, and I am not comfortable texting while driving with this device yet.

Voice to text however allows me some freedom...though I have to look down to find the button as well as hit that button well enough for it to register. At the end, I also have to find the send button and make it all happen.

Where can I get "special training" to make breaking the law ok?

I have a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, that is special training, does that make it legal for me to kick someone's ass if they piss me off? NO, THE LAW IS STILL THE LAW, regardless of "special training"

I don't know how people text and drive. I tried to a few times when I was waiting for the red light. *pick up the phone, unlock, open the contact sms, type 'hi' and then sees that the light will turn green so throw the phone down* So texting and driving even in red light is pointless/failure, lol. I'd be pretty scare driving with people that text and drive tbh. You're looking at the screen with one or two hands off the wheel...Like BC, it's illegal in Ontario to use any device that hinders your driving ) and you get a nice hefty fine if caught!

Ontario’s distracted driving law prohibits drivers to talk, text, type, dial or email using hand-held devices. Calls to 911 are an exception. It is also illegal for drivers to use electronic devices such as a laptop or a portable DVD player while driving.

If you’re caught talking, e-mailing or sending text messages you could be fined up to $500. Also, if you put others in danger, you could be fined up to $1,000, lose six demerit points, a driver’s licence suspension and even serve jail time!

Oh other than those 2 incidents (at red lights)...I don't text and drive :P

I do text while stopped at red lights or traffic.

I text at red lights, but not in traffic even at a stand-still. I'm paranoid that even if traffic is going slowly & I'm texting I could still easily rear-end someone even if I'm trying to be careful. Better safe than sorry.

I don't find it difficult to text @ red lights because usually all I have to say when I'm in the car is "on my way" or "running late" if I'm meeting up w/ people. I live in the Kansas City suburbs & my average commute time no matter where I'm going is about 15-20 minutes. Everything else I have to say can wait that long.

Yeah I'm a bit of an exception to the rule.

1.) I hit 50wpm on my samsung moment, so replies are rather fast.

2.) I drove a cab for 3 years during the latter portion of college(first degree), so I'm used to juggling tasks during driving, and I've driven in Chicago's worst for 3 years nearly 8 hours a day.
