Root Does this seem normal??...overclocking

Ok, so my next step is to go with my first custom Rom (ApeX)....its on the sdcard ready to go, but im being a little bit of a baby about actually clicking "ok" and going through with it lol :D

but anyways...i decided to give a go at a little overclocking and see what the results were...so i downloaded the quickclock app because i saw it recommended in one of the tutorial threads on here...

let it calibrate and find the minimum voltages...so here were my results, and im just wondering if this is fairly common for a DX running Moto's stock ROM...

first went for the Gold and set it to 1.2ghz...might has well have locked up...could barely do anything...

dialed it back to 1.175ghz....she was BLAZING fast...and running smooth, went back and managed to rip off a 1710 on Quadrant, but then after that got REALLY choppy and even just the home screens became a nightmare...

dialed it back to 1.15ghz...like butter since last night...managed a 1590 straight away in Quadrant, which is up from my usual mid 1400's at 1.0ghz...

so does that sound somewhat normal for the stock Moto Rom??...

Hi,

Glad you're playing around with your dx! Overclocking can be finicky. Personally, I'd play around with roms first.

However, when overclocking, don't set it to do so at boot. That will make you unstable and can brick you. I learned the hard way.

Each processor is different and will perform differently than another chip. They just have to perform well at one ghz, so you experiment to find out your parameters.

I guess that I am a little luckier (if you can say that), I can take mine up to 1.35GHz. That is as far as I have pushed. I have been running there for a couple of weeks.

Highest I could do with my last DX was 1.2 stable and this replacement I have can run 1.3 without any problems. Guess it varies phone to phone.

A lot of people seem to be able to reach 1.3 and have it run stable. I'm now down to 1115 to see if it will run stable. 1150 caused a lock up about once a day.

It's all a matter of what your particular processor can take. I've seen some people not even able to get passed 1050.

I set mine at 1.25 straight out, and it has ran stable for weeks.

The phone is smooth with a good ROM as is, so I'd say having a chip that can't OC much but loves lower voltage is better compared to one that can OC heavily but also needs higher voltage regardless of the OC level in comparison.

what app are you using to overclock??...what are your voltages?

Overclocking 101
IMO a must-read for overclocking.

Oh geez, that's a lot to read... :D

My recommendation is to nail down overclocking before undervolting with Quickclock.

I recommend starting with jRummy's Overclock using ULV only (lowest voltage settings) and find something that's sensible and stable for at least a week. If something flakey happens, then drop it down a bit. I started at 1.35 for 2 weeks, then 1.30 for a couple more and now I'm at 1.25. Once you establish the top stable speed, you can see if you can determine what's the lowest voltage you can set for all those speeds. If you try to do it all at once and have instability, do you raise the voltage or drop the max speed? You don't really know.

I use jrummy's overclock app. Its very simple and noob friendly. It has speeds and voltages built into it that you just select. Just click set cpu scaling frequencies, then ultra low voltage, low voltage, medium voltage or high voltage and then choose your clock speed.

Personally I stick with low voltage just because the phone seems to do a little better. I have turned it up to 1.4 ghz, got like 2k in quadrant then got scared and have kept it at 1.2 ghz on LV since. I get plenty battery life so I dont see a reason to go to ultra low voltage.

I felt the same way as you about flashing a rom before I flashed apex, then just did all the precautions and went for it and have been so much happier since. The phone literally came alive with apex.

If you: have a full backup via droid x bootstrapper then you have nothing to worry about, if something messes up you can always restore your stock rooted settings. Make sure you have your contacts linked with your google email account and they will restore automatically, and then backup whatever apps you want with titanium backup.

If you have all that you literally have nothing to worry about, just follow fab's directions and it will be super easy.

Running ApeX 1.3.1 with Quickclock. Quickclock will try to discover the lowest voltage you can hit and scale the clock/volt accordingly. Be patient with it as it calibrates, it will take some time.

Coming from a HTC Eris running various custom kernals, the ROMs made a diff. With the DX and being stuck with essentially the same kernel, maybe not.

Quickclock will let do 1.2, 1.25 and 1.3 just fine, no FCs or lock up. I never set at boot, either.

1200 63

My phone tops out at 1.15 GHz. And usually changing the ROM won't let you overclock any higher.

I can run 1.2 GHz but the phone will reboot randomly every few hours or so. I've bumped it down to 1.15 and it runs smooth. With Liberty, LPP+, and overclocking my phone is a dream. I can't put it down!

My settings

300 18
600 33
900 48
1150 60

Once I found a setting my phone was stabled with after a couple weeks I set it on boot with 130 seconds delay just in case it screws up and I can disable it.

I have tried alot of settings that people posted on here and most of them would just lock my phone up. Something I had to play with and figure out on my own.

Very good advice. In QuickClock, however, you're covered even if you do set at boot with some wonky CPU config. It stores the boot settings to the SDCard, so all ya gotta do is pull the SDCard, reboot, open up the app, disable the boot option in the advanced menu, and slap the SDCard back in there.
