Dog Days/Afternoons...

My sister-in-law stopped by on Sunday afternoon to drop off a few things for my wife, but she just stood at the door and handed the stuff to me and left. I asked my wife later why she didn't come in and I was told she's not comfortable with our dogs.

I immediately went out and bought them each a bag of treats. :D

I made the mistake of leaving a washing up sponge too close to the edge of the kitchen worktop. Our dog got it, and before we realised, he'd shredded the sponge, and eaten a lot of it. Can't have tasted very nice. But I hope it doesn't cause problems. From what I Googled, looks like it should pass through one way or another. It was perfectly clean, with no chemicals on. What do you think?

Not sure really. I guess it depends on how much he really ate. I'd call the vet but mostly just watch for trouble. Bad dog! Hopefully it'll pass and that will be that. Bad dog!

Yeah we're going to ask the vet, just thought maybe if someone was on here, could offer some immediate advice.
I don't blame him, It's me that's the bad dog, I shouldn't have left it within his reach. Dogs will eat anything won't they? Including their own faeces. Ugh!

Depends on the size of the dog and how much the sponge was chewed up. Our husky (90+ lbs.) had a penchant for swallowing sweat socks whole ... and would pass them the same way. :spitoutdroid: He also swallowed a squeaky toy once and it sat in his stomach for 4 or 5 weeks at which time he puked it up. When he used to do these things, the vet's advice was to give him a tablespoon of mineral oil to lubricate his insides and watch for whatever he ate to pass. It always did for us, but every dog is different.

Definitely call the vet, but they'll probably give you the advice to watch for behavior changes like lethargy and panting. That's a signal somethings wrong. And, if the dog starts dry heaving and has diarrhea, it could be a sign he's blocked, which is very dangerous.

Luckily our current pack will occasionally shred something like a throw pillow or a couple of yard of toilet paper if someone forgets to close the powder room door, but they don't eat it.

Spare a thought for our George, who is going in for that operation today. Slightly more complicated than usual, as one of his balls hasn't dropped, so the vet will have to do a bit of rooting around to find it. In any case he's already confused that he's had no breakfast, and I'm anticipating a few difficult days ahead.

If the vet needs help I'll send Tickle over, she's great at finding balls!!

Hope it all goes well for George, he'll be just fine in a few days I'm sure.

:D Thanks, but just our luck to have a non-standard dog. After external examination, the vet couldn't locate the missing item, and he'll need an ultrasound to see what the situation is, plus a more complex operation.
