Root Don't tether !!!!!!!!!!

people I'm encouraging you not to teather it will only hurt us in the long run
why you may ask? because metro is not efffn Verizon or sprints etc thats why.. they cant sustain that amount of data traffic in their network caused by people teathering your phone to your PC or what not you people only make the 4g experience for other users a nightmare.. why do you think metro up the price from 60 to 70 unlimited because of people that tether is the reason all of the big phone service companies don't give unlimited data no more so please stop teathering and get a good internet service your cell is to a effn modem you can go all out with just because metro gives you unlimited data and keep in mind that metro can suspend your account( i hope so) for violating their terms and conditions :motz:

I can't say that the OP's wrong about his premise, but if you disagree with him, please argue the merits and don't post any personal attacks against a member.

If we all would get two meg up and six down that might be sweet. Reality is it's not going to make any tell difference especially since the rooted tethering crew is only a percentage of metro users. Metro will just cram more users onto each tower to go everything as cheaply as possible. Communism also works in theory Marge, in theory. (H. Simpson)
 
Everything he said is logical, and none of it is difficult to prove or disprove. Verizon hasn't offered an unlimited data plan for as far back as I can remember. Sprint, AT&T, all those big name carriers don't throttle data, set caps, and overcharge for fun and profit (Well, a little for profit). Bandwidth isn't free, and if we don't take good care of what we've got it will go away. I use tethering solely for updating my PS3, or a bit of light internet when it's raining and my internet goes out. We're two short price jumps like the last one we just had from hitting the sprint unlimited data price my cousin pays. That's an old plan and it might not even be offered anymore, though. Just because it's there doesn't mean we have to use it, and short of crippling your usage, it would make it much easier on metro, and on our wallets if we would keep our bandwidth down a little bit where possible. And, as a bonus, if we don't gulp down as much as we can as often as we can, we'll get that much more speed out of our service. There's not really a downside to putting in a little effort, is there?

As for me, I'd run around and get screencaps of all the major carriers plan offerings, but I'm tired and simply don't feel like it. Maybe tomorrow, unless somebody else cares to?

Him knowing the inner workings of company policy and bandwidth use at Metro is logical? I don't think so. :rolleyes: Unless they actually came out and said it, there is no way to know their reasons for the increase. The OP is guessing. That is unless he is really a Metro executive coming on here to try to influence us. :mad:

I guess you do have a point as I'm sure someone is doing that. With cool apps as netflix and hbo go why bother.
 
Everything is unlimited till you get more than what you paid for. When the big guys keep uping the price the little guy will too. Why because they can.
 
Funny thing is, there are torrent client apps on the market. It's more about stuff like someone uploading 15gbs of data in a day.
 
This thread is full of so much fail its unbelievable. One, it doesnt matter if your tethering or not, data is data so whether your tethering, downloading apps, syncing or whatever, your bandwidth usage is the same. Two, Metro ALREADY throttles your 4G speeds after youve downloaded a certain amount of data. Three, there are $40 and $50 4G plans they just come with less 4G data than the others. Four, most of the towers that Metro uses are Verizon towers, they just rent bandwidth from them, so the more we use, the more we pay for, so the more they have to rent from them (you can verify this by setting your phone to use data on "roaming" areas, areas that are still in Metros coverage but get bad reception you can sometimes get on another Verizon tower and get much better reception, and it doesnt count as "roaming" because its technically in Metros area so they dont really know the difference.)

You may as well be telling everyone to not use data at all and just use WiFi. Unless somehow in your particular area EVERYONE decides to start downloading large amounts of data with 4G all at the same time, and all from the same tower, then theres no problem. Your not experiencing lots of users downloading the same time, its Metro throttling your 4G speeds. Deal with it or switch to Verizon and pay $120 a month.
 
It is a good point that those on the sub $70 plans are already getting throttled regardless.

How many people here even have the $70 plan?

Even the $70 plan throttles you somewhat after youve used a certain amount of data. And I have the $60 plan not the $70 one. And honestly, 3G is fast enough for just about anything I need it for. The only reason I ever turn on my 4G antenna is when I ABSOLUTELY have to get an app or something like that downloaded. Other than that I just use 3G or WiFi.

Oh, I looked at some numbers and I'm figuring metro has maybe 10% rooted android users with roughly half their customers running androids.
This means that 5% of their total users have rooted phones.
Assuming that they all tether that's still a tiny draw when it comes down to it.

So, based on some careful questioning of three private and two corporate stores I'm gonna say that maybe 2.5-3% of ALL android users on metro tether at all.

do you have a grandfathered $60 plan or the new one?

i've never run up against a throttle on the unlimited plan even when watching tons of youtube clips, streaming BBall games and downloading large files.

has this happened to you?

i dont believe there are many people on the $70 plan as quite frankly you dont need that much data allowance unless you plan on streaming sports events and/or porn on your phone. if not then you're a drop in the ocean.

its about the amount of data you use not so much how you use it. metro will be more concerned with someone seeding torrents and uploading large files to filehosts from their phone than someone tethering their connection to look at facebook on their PC.
 
So porn is not a sport :eek: I'm on the old $60 unlimited plan and had never been cut off. What is a good data counter? 3g watch dog I didn't care for. Let's see what kind of numbers we get.
