I think this is wrong. When people talk about "SGS2 on Verizon" they're actually referring to the Samsung Function, which appears to be a slightly modified/upgraded SGS2. Samsung has already applied for a trademark on that name. It hasn't been officially announced, but I think most of us would be surprised if it didn't appear within 2-4mo.

I think sept is the earliest you will see the function if even that soon. If they add LTE to it I cant see it coming out until november or so.
 
No LTE unless second gen LTE chips are being sampled and are found to be significantly more power efficient.

This is why I'm really waiting for Krait by Qualcomm.

But Canadian carriers are getting it late this month just above our border, even before Bionic hits here. And if that's 3G, why would it take so long like Sept?

From here. Its seems the mix up was the name of the phone. Everyone is calling it galaxy or hercules . When it should be called the function. Thats where the mix up is.

That was just me trying to correct some newbies confusion over Function and Hercules some time ago. So it became your source for t-mobile being the only SGSII carrier? wow.
 
im torn between both devices. but if the bionic is gonna have a 4.5 inch screen i think thats a little too big. and if the galaxy s2 (function) is gonna only be a 3g its really gonna suck. but when i got my incredible i thought it was the perfect size and the droid x screen was way too big. now i envy its size. so maybe ill do the same with 4.3 vs 4.5 eventually... but right now im leaning towards the function.

I also think 4.5" screen would be too huge for me when it's not so slim like Infuse. Even with 4.3" screen, it looks like a bulky phone overall. Don't like Evo 3D for similar reason but its screen quality looks nice. Pentile display quality on such big screen concerns me. I'm leaning to Function too though it will come later than this one.
 
I think the infuse looks silly because of how big it is, even if it's slim. the bionic was supposed to be 4.3 but they upgraded it to 4.5 inches. i wish they would've left it at 4.3
 
Still seems off for the Bionic to have a 4.5" display, due to LTE and dual core, in regards to battery life. My guess remains it is the same display as the DX2, but there are some folks who obviously hope that is a wrong guess.
 
I fail to understand how a 4.65% increase in size can lead to THAT much of a power difference...

Yeah it may drain more battery but its not like it will cut battery life in half...

Exactly. We aren't going from a 4.3'' screen to a 10' screen. You guys are making a huge deal out of a small power drain.

Because the Bionic still uses the first generation of LTE chips which already drains too much power, so not like comparing to the D3 or even the DX2.

Second generation LTE is supposed to be on chip (stressing "supposed"), so given the dev lead-time, it is obvious the Bionic does not have a second generation LTE chipset since using the 4430 or 4460 (they do not have LTE on chip).

Point is with LTE, battery life is short enough, so any percent less is too much. Unless you leave it off. Still your point is correct, since it will not cut the power in half.

Added:

BTW, the size difference is not proportional, since more than one dimension. For a 16X9 shape, the diagonal needs to be multiplied by .49 for width and .87 for length. The surface coverage is the relative point for battery consumption, so 4.5" vs 4.3" diagonal is actually about 9.4% more battery need in regards to surface space of display (same pixel total, but more light needed).

The thing is that I cannot wait much longer, my D1 is on its last legs, and I don't know if I can justify upgrading to a non LTE phone for 2 years...

Our last hope for the time being is that the Galaxy S2 comes to Verizon, and it has LTE. We are all in the same boat. I have to give my Droid 1 CPR at least daily until a viable upgrade is available.

I went into a VZW store this weekend to check out the D3 which as we know is a larger screen than the D1 and I'm not sure how much larger I'd want it. The D3 fits well in the hand where the 4.3" T-Bolt feels slightly bulky. I can't even imagine a 4.5" screen. I came real close to picking up the D3 (my D1 is toast and I've been working off an old crap phone so my patience with all these delays is growing thin) but I've committed myself to at least see the Bionic first on the 4th and if it doesn't release on the 4th, I'm going with the D3 or the SGS II if it is out by then.

Doubt the gs2 will be out by then if the bionic is even out by then.
 
My point is not whether it is 4.5" or 4.3" screen exactly. It's bulky and heavy regardless. 4.5" wouldn't do any good to battery for sure though it remains to be seen. Battery in Bionic will be under extra load from larger screen, LTE compared to battery in D3. I am curious if Moto has developed their own efficient LTE chip, not like ones in Tbolt, Revolution.

Bionic should rock, but the D3 is a great device to fall back on, just in case. :)

What ever Moto does puts its phone near or at the top for reception. Maybe they found some magic in making their own LTE chip, if that article is correct.

Maybe they will have better luck than the last three OEMs. Three different radios with same power hunger.
 
After going back and forth between the two, I think I've finally decided on the S2.

I've come to realize that I won't really care about 4G until it's as established as 3G. Plus, I don't want to deal with the issues that come along with 4G, namely battery drain. Having owned a D1 since December of 2009, I know that battery life and RAM are two of the most important things to me when it comes to a smartphone. Speaking of RAM, I've heard that some of the Bionic's 1GB will be dedicated to webtop and not all of it will be fully utilized by the phone. Not sure how accurate that claim is but I don't know if I'm willing to risk being stuck (again) with a phone that is underpowered (with regards to RAM) for another to years.

With the S2, I don't have to worry about that. It's been out for a while and has been tested and proven that it is fast, reliable and has good battery life. Not to mention, I prefer TouchWiz over Blur by a long shot. I think Sense is the best and really amplifies the Android experience but TouchWiz seems to be pretty good too. Blur is just blah. Now if the Bionic comes out, performs just as well as the S2 and has great battery life (despite the LTE), I may change my mind but for now it's going to be the S2 for me (unless something else comes along before I upgrade).
