if those phones were horrible than the X fits in right there with them...the only real advantages being the larger screen...the form factor is debatable, as some prefer a physical keyboard...and the camera...the D2G even has the 1.2ghz processor...

those phones are PERFECT examples of how my theory of making the X better from the get go could have paid off...Moto released too many phones, too early with similar specs...and they are making the same mistakes again with the rumored DX2, and D3....

If Moto would slow their roll on releasing so many different devices and focus on making their new phones significantly better than the previous model instead of just an incremental step every 6 months then the release of their phones would be "events" like the launch of the X was...

the X had the internet buzzing for weeks and months leading up to its launch...yet the newest rumors are that we could see the X2 and D3 this very month and nobody has said even one official word about them yet...because when they launch very few are going to care...

why?....

- Because the people most likely that would be drawn to an X2 (current X owners) are not even halfway through the contract they signed when they bought the original X...meaning very few of us are eligible for an upgrade...

- Because the hardware is not a big enough jump from the original to warrant a jump at retail price...

Moto could have easily followed this type of schedule and made the release of their phones "events" like the yearly iPhone update

- The X last year...gone with a 1.2ghz cpu, FFC, larger battery...and been able to easily ride that phone as their flagship VZW model until this summer...to supplement the X "flagship" phone you have the D2 as a "second teir" device...and the DPro as a "business device"

- Release the Bionic (more memory, higher res screen, Tegra2, 4G LTE) to replace the X as the "flagship" device...again releasing supplementary devices inbetween...

- the X2 comes NEXT year when the majority of current X owners are ready for 2 year contract upgrades...again with monster specs...

...yes i understand that there are lots of people that want the "latest and greatest" and that Moto can make money by adding simple features and releasing new devices all the time...but look at the "horrible" phones like you said...the D2, D2G, DPro...they were for the most part failures...because they did not offer enough incentive for people to buy them...because the timing was poor, and their specs didn't do enough to wow people...

if Moto released more "future proof" phones and stretched out their life cycles a little more they could potentially capitalize on Apple like events surrounding the release of their yearly flagship models...

if you want to call phones that contain nearly identical specs (in some cases better) to the DX worthless...and the X "perfect" then there is something wrong :rolleyes:

they are only worthless in the sense that Moto failed to give them powerful enough hardware, and released them too early...which is exactly the same reason that the X2 and D3 will be equally worthless...by releasing them less than a year (rumored) after their predecessors, Moto is loosing out on all the potential customers that currently own previous versions of the phone that are not willing to pay retail for incremental updates in hardware...

do you think an X2 is worth ~$650 just for 256MB of added memory, a dual core cpu?? and you still won't have LTE??...no way...

im not talking about your "new every two" discount...if i upgrade my phone right now...i pay retail...which would be $500-$700+ depending on the device you choose...that is not going to change when NE2 is finally phased out for good...you're still going to have to wait till your contract is up, or they offer an early upgrade before you can avoid retail pricing..

im talking about the subsidized "contract price" you get when you're contract is eligible for an upgrade...ie: $199.99 w/ a contract

How are they mistakes? Lets say you had the option of improving an existing phone or bringing out a new model with hyped up promises, which one would you opt to do?

I will stick to my DX. It cost me a fortune and I love playing around with it. Now if they come out with something tangibly better than the DX that won't cost me nearly $1000 bucks then I'll think about it......lol.
 
yes metfanant i call it worthless, i like my big ass screen, and 4 hard buttons only, with no blackberry style keyboard, or slide out keyboard, the X is perfect ^_^

metfanant just join my worthless parade of idiocracy and you will enjoy the ride ^_^

you answered your own question with your second paragraph...because the phones are not ENOUGH of an upgrade to entice people to pay retail price for them...

so the mistake can be looked at from two different angles...

1. If they want to release the new version less than a year after the old one...the hardware does not have the "wow factor" to make people want to pay retail (~$600+)

2. They should have waited till AT LEAST the time when original X owners were ready for early upgrades so that they can get subsidized prices with a new contract instead of retail

IMO...the X2 is destined to not be as popular as the original X...sure it will get some people who are ready for new contracts...but all of us that bought the X when it first came out are long ways from our upgrades...and therefore will pass...the vast majority of X owners out there are normal people that don't mod their phones...they will hold onto these things for the full 2 years before an upgrade...

and i just don't see how you can take the D2G for example...and call it worthless while the X is perfect...

Yes...like you i prefer the larger screen and no keyboard of the X (hard vs soft buttons don't really bother me)...but the D2G has a faster processor, as well as global roaming...two things the X does not...

i just don't see how a phone can be "perfect" when it is beaten by a "worthless" phone in some areas...

But really though. Phone devs would be stupid not to release phones quickly. Yes it would benifit us for them to wait the full 2 years (or close to it) since most contracts are that length and the built up anticipation would be much higher...which would result in higher sales for the particular phone.

But in todays age. ppl shell out money like its paper(ironically) And consumers WONT stop buying. Wheter your the person waiting for the contract to end or your waiting for what you thing is "significant" enough of an upgrade. Either way. the companies are making sales, and making profit.

If you dont buy "this" phone, then some one else will....and "you" will buy the next one.

its actually quite the opposite...as a Mets fan we can just enjoy our baseball...we have no expectations to win...

i agree with you...however, i also think Apple has shown that longer life cycles can certainly work as they have a single device, and up until this year it was available on only a single network...and it took quite some time for Android to pass iOS' market share...

im also not advocating releasing a single phone every year...im just saying that "future proofing" your flagship model and replacing it every year instead of randomly whenever a new feature comes out would have its benefits

Yeup..both ideas will work... And if i was android I wouldnt wanna follow suite with apples structure. SO i understand why they do biz the way they do.

Do you have a Thunderbolt? It sucks compared to the X. Strait out of the box its smoother but my X was as smooth as my Thunderbolt with Apex or Liberty. My wife has my X now and all I did was root and setup autokiller and its as good as my TB has been with different kernels and roms. I was actually surprised at how good the X was without a Rom, when I first got it it was almost unbearable but not anymore. The only thing the TB has over the X is 4g, maybe the TB will get better because of the unlocked bootloader but so far I don't see what the fuss is all about with unlocked bootloaders.

i do not have one personally...but a very good friend of mine does...i have been VERY impressed with it in the few hours ive used it...

The main problems I have are that the browsers are a PITA to use and thats what I use most. The keyboard is very inaccurate and unresponsive at times, I changed keyboards to the HTC mod I used on my X and I have the same problem. The battery is horrible, the screen sucks and uses tons of juice. I like the soft keys and 4g though.
 
forget the Tbolt and the Charge. I'm jumping on the Galaxy S2 when it drops on Verizon. Its being called the best smartphone to date!

Man, let me tell you. An unlocked bootloader and the ability to load Cyanogen Mod is an ENORMOUS advantage over the X. Unlocked bootloader means that you can remove ALL of the bloat and make changes to the kernel that can turn an ordinary phone into a bad ass. The devs have made the very best out of what can be done with the X, but there is SO much more that could be done. Find someone with a rooted and modded Tbolt and watch how it completely changes that phone from the stock, bloated setup.
