For those into such... there will be a total lunar eclipse on the winter solstice, Dec. 21st. First total lunar eclipse on the winter solstice since the sixteen hundreds. The eclipse will be visible to all of North America and totality will be achieved at 2:17 am CST. If you've never seen a total lunar eclipse you should take a peek. The moon will take on a red hue and it's reflected light on the dark side of earth is just weird.
Hope for a clear night.

Morning all!
I have the standard htc weather/time widget working but I also have a very small font temperature in blue on my status bar? Sure don't remember seeing that before.
I have the same thing in my notification bar. In my case it is from the Weather Channel's app.

Won't be clear enough here to see it:(

Bummer bummer. It's not an event to end all events but it's kewl. I just recently sold my high end go to telescope for that very reason. If I had clear skys it was too windy. Between the elements and my children leaving home.. it was bagged up in storage mode drawing dust. Astronomy is a fantastic hobby except for the limited window of enjoyment.

I love astronomy, unfortunately it always seems to be too cloudy wherever I am to see any of the major events:(

I have an event for ya then. 2017 I think.. too far away to get serious about it now lol. There will be a full solar eclipse that will track it's way across the entire USA. I've never experienced a total solar eclipse but certainly plan to do so. You might have to travel to get directly under the umbra but I promise you.. it is a must be there life time sort of event.
Even if you travel and it's cloudy.. the effects of moon totally blocking the sun light to the earth will be major league. You will have multiple shadows even lol. It's a mind freak!

Yes, I agree! That will be the last total solar eclipse visible in the Unites States before the asteroid of 2030 destroys the planet!

Will it be in 2030 or it's return on 2032? Ah well.. it's been fun.

I just used the first year of it's approach in my first post, but I believe it's the return trajectory we have to worry about. Well, not all of us, I doubt I'll be around! LOL

I traveled to Turkey for the total eclipse in March 2006. It was definitely a profound experience. All the animals go silent, everything goes dark in the middle of the day, the sun looks like a flaming black pearl...it was eerie. You can really feel your place in the cosmos as the earth, sun and moon are aligned. It was one of the most powerful things I've experienced.

Do you have a trip to Mars planned around that time?:o

It's raining too hard here, I'll never see the eclipse! :(

That's a drag. There is sparce cirrus clouds here. I can easily see the moon so they could add to the over all effect. We'll see.

Btros... I'm jealous as hell! I've read about... seen videos.. and witnessed
a partial but never a total eclipse. My kids grew up behind a telescope so they weren't surprised when I told em.. I'm attending and so are you.. and your kids.. whatever.. WE ARE GOING. You will find me and mine in the umbra.

Yeah, if you're into astronomy or physics or anything, and I can tell you are - it will blow you away. I had tears in my eyes. I "almost" went to the one last year on Easter Island but pulled out at the last minute. The Chilean travel agents were too flakey and vague until it was too late for me to make plans. Turkey had almost 2 minutes of totality, Easter Island had over 3 minutes I think. A total eclipse on Easter Island will never happen again in our lifetimes :(

Let me know if you want to check my pics from Turkey, I have 'em on my facebook.

I watched a show about the eclipse at Easter Island... very kewl. I remember experiencing a partial in the late sixties.. while in high school and another likely in the mid eighties. They both impressed me greatly and they were only partials. I'd love to see your pictures if you care to share.
