Hi all! Hope everyone's New Year's celebration was fun!

Skorpios, I was on I-80 heading west Friday afternoon during that storm. Boy was that fun.

Morning all.

I'm getting closer and closer to deciding to root. I'm thinking that Titanium backup would be a good thing in case of a catastrophic failure. Still not sure though.

Morning!!
Me neither... kinda want to but for the most part i'm content.

To me, the BIGGEST advantage thus far in rooting has been the ability to back everything up exactly as I had it installed with TB!!

Of course, if I wasn't "new ROM" crazy every few days I wouldn't need to have such backups, but...ah you get my point!

So let's say I root the phone. When Gingerbread comes out, what would I have to do? I think I want to stay stock for now, but may look at other ROMs in the future if it wasn't too painful to restore my apps and settings. From looking at TB, it seems like it shouldn't be too bad, but not sure.

I'll try to answer you in two parts!!

Well it all really depends on "you", but technically speaking, you don't need to do anything. There are already a couple of viable GB ROM's out there for use. Of course, there are bugs (to be expected) that you would need to make a decision as to how they would affect your daily use! These GB ROM's keep improving and will get better with each release and should benefit greatly from the official whenever it arrives.

If however, you wanted the official GB ROM pushed by VZW at some point, you could root now and then un-root to get the official on your phone!

Here is the rub:

As a general rule, whenever an official ROM gets pushed by the carrier, it breaks the ability to root and then we (most of us anyway) need to wait for the vulnerabilities to be exploited again in order to root.

if it wasn't too painful to restore my apps and settings. From looking at TB, it seems like it shouldn't be too bad, but not sure.

It is actually really simple to restore apps and more importantly the "Apps + Data" with TB. You literally tap the restore button.

***This is by no means a definitive explanation, but hopefully it gives you some helpful information!

Very helpful it is. Thanks!

If I'm understanding what I'm reading in other threads, unrooting is essentially re-flashing with the stock distribution and turning the security back on. Is that right? If so, then I guess if I did that to get a GB OTA I would be without my app data (from the Titanium Backup) until root was achieved again. Is that right?

Well technically rooting (acquiring Super User permissions) and security (S-ON and S-OFF) is a separate matter. Prior to Froyo, there were two different tasks to perform; unrEVOked (SU)and unrEVOked forever (S-OFF).The NEW unrEVOked (post 2.2) does both tasks for you in one click!!

As for TB, as long as you do not remove the database when you unroot, you should be able to reinstall all of your apps when/if you re-root!

Hey all! Things are a little busy for me.
hey everyone hope yall had a good new years... i turned 22 on that day by the way :p
Happy belated Birthday Yojoe!

To elaborate on jayjay's information. If you leave S-OFF, you should be able to reroot even if the OTA patches the root exploits. AFAIK, you don't have to set S-ON to get the OTA, just be on a stock ROM.

Exactly right!
(Good catch, I knew I left something out ;))

I actually un-rooted prior to the 2.2 OTA but left S-OFF but could not run unrEVOked after the OTA to re-root which is not to say I coulnd't root again after the OTA, just not with unrEVOked!
