That's just crazy. I come from the old school where you repair everything until it just can't be repaired any longer. I'm glad business is good for you Musky.
 
Where I was living before, in Washington state, I spent a lot of time patching old XP systems. People were content to use them as long as they worked.
Now I'm in an area with a "throw away" mentality.
 
Are you sure it's the area and not just the way of man these days? I see facets of toss it and so what just about daily. It seems people expect their stuff to quit them and they have no plans to fix it. Throw away America. It blows my mind.

As a child, if we wanted something, we had to make it. If it ever got something store bought, you took good care, gave it proper maintenance, and repaired it when necessary. You sure didn't toss it in the dirt and and go buy another. That was back in the stone age though lol.
 
Well as I mentioned, in the less affluent area I was in before, people didn't mind paying a little to repair something rather than lay out the money for a new one.

But, you're right, we have become a "throwaway" society.
 
It's been coming for quite some time IMO. We've been trained by manufacturers to not expect any sort of longevity out of the products we purchase. They also all but make things impossible to work on or parts to replace. They want us to be completely frustrated in an attempted repair. Replace... with new and improved. It didn't bother me so much when most of manufacture was in country and creating jobs that fed the economy. It bothers me a lot now that most manufacture is farmed out to other countries.
 
Then don't. Replace, I mean.

What is the average lifetime of a cell phone? I bet most are replaced at some point 'cos the owner doesn't feel it meets his requirements any longer, or the manufacturer decided its lifespan is over and isn't offering any updates for it any more.
 
One of the things that shortens lifespans these days is environmental concerns. We've gone lead free with all electronics. However, lead free solder has a tendency to grow whiskers. They can cause shorts that cause failures. But, since they are so small, they burn out, which makes finding the problem almost impossible. In my opinion, that's why a restart can sometimes fix a problem, at least temporarily.

There will always be a desire by some to be on the leading edge of technology. If I had the money I'd likely replace phones more frequently. It's fun to have the latest and double fun when you are involved with the kick off and release and then the adventure of a new device here at AF. That being said.. I trade mine in somewhere between two and three years.. always post contract. It's a matter of money to me. I haven't replaced a phone yet that just died on me. They all have developed some sort of nagging problem... but still functional. I sometimes think I look for some good excuse to upgrade :)

I even see the impact of environmental concerns in my construction field. The removal of lead... the conservation of trees.. engineered products only time will tell where the fail point will be. I suppose some of it is all well and fine. But the old tried and true construction has an impressive track record.
I'm not convinced a change is necessarily an advancement.
 
It took over a month, but I finally got my Incredible 4G replaced! So far, so good with this one. I intend to keep it as long as I can, even though my contract is up in a few weeks. I still have my unlimited data, which is good since I have used almost 5GB in the last three weeks with all the backups and downloading all the music and apps I had to put back on after all the resets and new devices. I know they have a 6GB plan, but I haven't decided if I will stay with them or try a new carrier. The cost each month is killing me, even with my employer discount.

I think the "New Every Two" program they used to have really contributed to the mentality that we have to have a new phone every two years. My phone is the only electronic device I replace frequently. Back in the days of the flip phone, I had a need to replace them since they seemed to break around the two year mark. My Dare worked fine when I got my Dinc and the only reason I upgraded my Dinc to the 4G was to get my last upgrade before the unlimited data plan was gone. The update that caused it to constantly restart was annoying but not enough to justify getting a new one. My laptop is seven years old and is slow as can be, but since I do most of my web browsing on my iPad or phone, it is adequate for most purposes. I think things aren't as well made anymore either and that's why people are so willing to replace them so quickly.
