Droid Prime, or Bionic??

Xperia Play is a non-starter, but I figure that - between LauncherPro and Titanium Backup - I can have a stock vanilla look and freeze the bloatware. I just don't know whether there will be any custom launchers that can work with ICS for awhile. With 1GB of RAM, though, bloatware won't be as much an issue as it would be with a lesser-RAMmed device.

i guess i wouldnt mind a little bloatware but launcherpro just sits on top of the skin it doesnt really get rid of it. I hope there will be a huge community behind the new prime so when it gets root we will be able to make that a vanilla android ics phone

i really do not know what to do. i want nexus branding not droid branding. Nexus promises first updates directly from Google. Verizon is a bitch for doing this to us. All that bloatware ugh. I feel really stuck here. If I leave Verizon I will not be able to get back the unlimited date I am grandfathered in. Then again I dont use it that much i guess. But that is because my phone is a bit slow and I now own a laptop. And to top that off my gf wants to get off her moms plan and on to my plan by the end of the year. Damn these two phone better be in every sense identical except for the name. Or else I am stuck to make a hard decision. Screen and processor better be the same.

Yeah I just found & read that too. Doesn't bode well for the Bionic fans out there :(

Meh, I could care less about what Gizmodo says on a non Apple device. I'll grab this tomorrow and get the Prime when it comes out on my wife's line and swap. Win-win for both of us. :D

well let me know how it goes cuz i am really curious, i know how sometimes they favor over apple but i would like to assume they didnt do that for that review

I doing almost the same - in 12 hours this phone will be in my hands already charged and ready to go. When the Prime comes out I'll get it via upgrade #2. As long as it passes muster, that is....

Not buying jack until the thing is either unlocked and ROM ready or never if it never is. Gonna have patience and get the one that allows development. Why on earth anyone would buy something that is locked down tight when we've had a open Droid for so long now is beyond me....have read here and elsewhere that they've patched the exploit for root already. That pisses me off royal....F Motorola...I'll get the Samsung Prime.....

so now that the bionic is out let know what you new owners think. Here is some goodies on the nexus prime.

phone i want!!!

Yeah, I decided at the last minute to wait with the Bionic. I want to at least have a better idea of what the Droid Prime is going to be. I was really interested in the Bionic's laptop dock, but the early impressions I'm hearing of it are not too good.

Who knows - I might still end up buying the Bionic if the Droid Prime turns out to not be that impressive, or gets delayed any further. My Droid 1 can last a little longer.

i am so worried the droid prime will end up looking like the nexus prime's retarted twin brother that the lives in the basement away from the public.

With stats like that, I don't care if it looks like the Elephant Man! I've been packing an OG Droid for nearly 2 years... looks can't get much worse than that :p

true, i should have clarified that i mean stat wise, I hope it has the same hardware specs same everything if comes with some verizon apps i will not care.

But haven't you heard? The non-Verizon phone might not get the "Nexus" name either. The name "Samsung Galaxy Prime" is being thrown around.

The name doesn't really matter though. I suspect they will be basically the same phone, except the Droid Prime will come with lots of wonderful Verizon apps. :D

But look at the Droid 1: The non-Verizon model of it was the Motorola Milestone. Basically the same phone, but it tends to be the forgotten model. A few smaller carriers still have it, and never did update it past 2.1.

So what is happening with the nexus moniker? I find it important to me is because that is what Google uses to show off their next huge update of android and use for testing future updates before the next nexus device comes out.

Also what i was thinking is that Verizon at the time of the release of the original droid they probably didn't really have much invested in the android market also they weren't prepared with apps for android either. Now they are.

But something else i thinking will Samsung have enough time for mold out a touchwiz for ICS? I guess so. I do not want to have another launcher on top of that. I loving rooting my droid 1, but I want to have a phone I know that i do not have root just so i can rid of the UI. I want to root to gain not get rid of. I will compensate with Verizon apps. But UI is something I can not let go.

And with all the different news I am hearing about other carriers not receiving the prime. I think this being misinterpreted. At first there was talks of the nexus prime only coming out to Verizon. Then it was revealed it was going to be called the Droid Prime. That threw me off. Would Google do that? Google uses the Nexus name to show off the best of their best on this phone. So a week later it was revealed that. There is still Nexus Prime. Droid Prime is exclusively for Verizon. They will be the first to get ICS and most likely later on the nexus prime will come out. Just like the droid and the nexus one. the Droid was left in the dust, when it came to focus to the community.

Nexus Prime passes through Bluetooth SIG; Droid Prime receives WiFi certification | Android and Me

this shows how there are two different phones

Google wouldn't just grant exclusively just to Verizon and hack off the nexus brand like that.

I just hope to god that there is only one.

Cuz

THERE CAN ONLY BE ONEEEEE!!!

Now that I have a Bionic in hand, I can tell you it's everything I wanted it to be. Anyone in desperate need for a new phone, you're def going to be pleased. This IS the best phone on the market right now.

I don't know about that. Been reading alot of folks don't like the screen, the phone volume is too low, the vibration is too weak. Time will tell....still holding out for the Prime. Got nothin' but time....

Heh, now we're hearing "Galaxy Nexus".

Yeah, I remember being disappointed at how the Droid 1 was such a great phone, but only a few months later the Nexus One was getting all the attention - and that lasted many months to come. But in that case, Nexus One was the superior phone.

Where we're at now, I think you might put the Droid Bionic in the place of the Droid 1. When the (whichever) Prime is released, the Bionic will be the forgotten phone. The difference this time is that two models of the Nexus device are being released. Sure, the hardware is different - one is CDMA and one is GSM. But I expect that's as far as the hardware differences will go.

Now with that said, I would be not be surprised if the Nexus Prime is quick to get the latest Android updates, and Verizon drags their ass at approving the Droid Prime updates.

To me though, none of the above especially matters. I really don't like Verizon, but:
  • I still have their unlimited data plan
  • In my area, they have unquestionably the best coverage
  • Though they don't have 4G in my area yet, they have 4G in a nearby city and they are the fastest at rolling out 4G

So even if the Droid Prime were to come out with a slower processor and less memory, it would still be my phone (so long as it exceeds the Droid Bionic's specs and does not get delayed).

ugh you are so right, i am with you on every point you made except for the last, my area has 4g. I cant get t mobile cuz they have shitty coverage here. I just hope the mod community really works on this droid nexus then. Like peter Alfonso i love his roms, and im not talking about the buglessbeast i am talking about the gpa. It looks great and functions great. So as long as the hardware doesnt change much hoping for same screen and cpu other than that i wont mind much

I wouldn't count out that the hardware will be different for VZW prime and other primes, apple is afterall building one phone for all networks, it just makes sence. and VZW likes their world phones here lately.

I'm sure both the Bionic and the Prime will have developer attention. Just a matter of having patience. Problem with the Bionic is the darned locked bootloader. If that never gets dealt with, it will limit what can be done with that phone, which would be a shame.

The unlocked bootloader will be coming. Sooner (hopefully) than later (possibly), but Google is not going to leave us hanging for too long.
