Droid X and Gingerbread

I don't no how it could be a resolution issue when its got one of the better screen at 854x480 so I don't know how that makes any sense but we'll see.

What I heard at one of our product trainings was that if the device had a 1 GHz proc. and at least a 4" screen those were the requirements for gingerbread. Once again speculation but if that is true the X meets both requirements.

That is a common misconception. The 1 Ghz processor was a recommendation, not a requirement. The 4" or larger screen size is only required if the phone is going to use one of the new higher resolutions that Gingerbread supports. Any phone that is using froyo and earlier resolutions will not have to have a minimum 4" screen.

LG has already put this rumor to bed b/c they had so many complaints after the "rumor" of the 1ghz requirement meant that the Optimus line wouldn't be updated. LG said that wasn't true, and then an android dev from google (can't remember who) sent out a tweet that there were no processor requirement for gingerbread, I think i read it on android central, if I can find the link i'll post it.

Nexus S has 800x480 screen resolution. The resolution on that phone doesn't even meet the "required" screen resolution. Droid X will probably get Gingerbread, just not for a while.

Honestly these software updates are no big deal. Froyo was not a big improvement over the previous. Everyone gets all excited about the latest, greatest software but then they come out and the improvements are minimal.

Agreed! Gingerbread isn't going to allow me to time travel, turn everything I own into gold and so on. It will have no impact on my life. All it will provide is minor improvements to a smartphone.

Wow, I have a completely different outlook on froyo... full flash gave Android a huge advantage over other OS's, the streamlined power manager gave my device noticeably improved battery life, and a wifi hotspot... all in one update? ?? You must be kidding me!

We'll be hard pressed to find another update that improves a device that significantly. That was the big one if you ask me.

Forget Gingerbread...think Honeycomb and Icecream...etc etc..bwahaha go maaaad! But really, when you dance with android that's the risk you take. That said, I think it's highly likely.

here's a rumor to start. No phones but the Nexuses will see Gingerbread as the four carriers decided that they are going to initiate a new plan that lets all current android users trade their old android phone for $150 towards the next generation of phones, all of which they will guarentee will get Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream and Jamba Juice

Once you get fab's new apex rom I really dont even see the need for gingerbread. My phone runs like a beast and has pretty much the complete gingerbread UI, who needs the real gingerbread?

uh... ApeX is NOT gingerbread. it merely has gingerbread theme on it, but the base kernel/bootloader/system files are based off Froyo...

"Android engineer, Brian Swetland, recently said, “Any device that runs well with Froyo should run even better with Gingerbread. The base hardware requirements have not changed. Of course OEM updates do depend on individual OEM efforts, and I can’t speak for the OEMs, but there’s no technical reason devices able to run Froyo shouldn’t be upgradeable."

I hear you bro, but its not like it says, "The Droid X will be getting Android 2.3 in the coming months."

We will probably get it, but I will believe it when its fact.

Its not like I said that either. Just saying its very capable of running it. The screen res is fine.

I promise we will get Gingerbread!:D

That's what I'm talking about! :D

I sure hope so man! Will be sweet.

Right now I just wish the Gingerbread keyboard was the correct size for the Droid X!

If anyone knows if this has been fixed yet, please shoot me a PM.

Thanks for the link rdillz!

That is entirely wrong. Being the fact the bootloader is locked we cannot update the kernel. If Gingerbread includes an updated kernel you would have to port the OS to use the motorola kernel. This would likely lose some features and changes from the updated. Also, since there is only one AOSP Froyo rom being developed and it still isn't out, I wouldn't expect that to be easy.

Root gets you very little.

Root actually gets you quite a bit. In fact with the progress that has been made on the X, Updating the kernel is about the "ONLY" thing you can't do. As Outlaw stated. I will stay on a rooted, tricked out 2.2 until 2.3 is rooted, deodexed, oc'd, and has a full sbf.

We had flash before froyo, I didn't notice any better battery life from it. Don't get me wrong, some of the little things from froyo were nice but it's not like any of these updates really improves your experience with the phone significantly. If and when we get gingerbread I am sure it will be nice but I am in no rush and I am not expecting much from it. My phone is running great as is.
