Motorola Droid X getting Android 2.2 update starting tomorrow -- Engadget

As first reported by Droid-Life here:

DROID X Android 2.2 Update is Ready, According to Verizon

The Verizon support page for the Droid X has now been updated to show that Android 2.2 is finally ready for launch. .
The update will take everyone to version 2.3.15 and will be approximately 67.6MB. Froyo is here people!

Remember that Blur allows you to “pull” updates, so it’s time to start trying. Go into Settings>About>System Updates and see if you are able to grab it way ahead of schedule!

It should be noted, that there is speculation that the update won't actually go live until sometime tomorrow (22nd) or Thursday (23rd).

I can't wait to see the 100+ identical threads that will be popping up in the next few days, asking if the user needs to revert back to 2.1, and if so, how they can actually can do it...

I dont know if this means it can get pulled yet. I seem to remember this all showing up a couple days before the release for both the D1 and the DInc... I do think tomorrow would be the probiably date though like whats been reported.... anyone else find the irony in 2.2 possibly being dropped on the 22nd? lol

So do I have to revert back to 2.1 in order to apply this update? Or will I be able to get it if I'm on the rooted x-treme leak version 3?

(/me ducks)

so anyone know, think, speculate... from that release above, that the X will get a Verizon VVW app that is updated from what is on the D1?

I dont remember the D1's VVM app getting a revamp like they describe above when 2.2 came out for us.

that app and GUI has always been kind of weak so I would be curious if a new VVM app will get released or be able to be pulled off the X.

Tried to get it and it just kept searching and searching for over 10 minutes, so I cancelled it. No rush, since we waited this long.

Does that line just bug the hell out of anyone else besides myself?? I'm excited to get the update but have a small feeling someting is going to ruin this to good to be true moment. I sure hope not though...

I'm not dying for this update at all! I'm not ever going back to stock. This will probably block root, No thanks. My DX runs great right now so no hurry for me.

This is one of my final questions. i rooted SOLELY to change bloatware apps from "apk" to "bak." I just changed them back in anticipation of the OTA but i can't find VZ Navigation anywhere. I could have SWORN i saw it on my phone before but i did get the phone off craigslist from a guy that had downloaded the leaked 2.2. So was it just included on that and when i flashed the 2.1 sbf it disappeared?

if so, then i should be good to go.

I saw that too. To me it's just more bloatware, but I can see Verizon, in the future, making us use VZ Navigator by blocking Google Navigation.

Rooted phones are safe for OTA updates right?...i still have 2.1, but i rooted for wireless hotspot capabilities.

A few questions that may help others too -

1. I tried to search for the update, following the steps mentioned here. It says it's up to date (2.1). Well, I guess it will be a few days before I get it... No problem.

2. Shall I root the phone "before" the update? I've read somewhere that you can't root the phone after 2.2 is installed...

3. Should I even bother with the rooting, is it any good...benefits from doing it?

Thanks!

Yes. It is obvious that VZW is trying to add value (i.e. bring in more revenue) by supplementing the standard Android functionality. They also promoted the 3G Hotspot, Visual Voice Mail and Backup Assistant - all products of theirs. Unfortunately, it recalls a time not long ago when they stepped all over base functionality trying to control the whole experience.

+1 for sure...I never liked that stuff on the "dumb" phones, now don't destory my "smart" phone with that garbage.
