Droid X Recommendation

Greetings!

New to this forum, and very new to the world of Droid. As a matter of fact, I don't have one. YET. I currently have an HTC ozone that I'm looking to upgrade in May when Verizon will allow me to. :)

The big question is - do I snag a Droid X which should be lower in price because it reaches EOL in March, or do I get the Droid X 2. Granted, at this point we're hearing rumors about what the X 2 has/has not, but all in all it sounds like a repackaging of the Droid X with no new features (and if the rumor is true, the taking away of some features like the camera button).

Just wondering what the overall consensus would be - get the original model or pay for the newer model, which really sounds like the older model. And is EOL a big deal when choosing phones?

Thanks for helping the newbie. I've been reading posts on this forum for the past couple months in anticipation of getting a DROID X (or equivalent) when I can in my contract. Not interested in 4G (can't get in my area for a couple years) so the Bionic doesn't appeal to me, and I'm not normally one who updates a phone every two years either. Would have probably kept the ozone for a while if the Droid X hadn't come along. :D

EOL means nothing from the consumer point of view. They are only there to give a schedule to Motorola and Verizon on when to stop manufacturing and when last time buys will be placed.

As to your question, depends on whether you want to switch phones a lot, or are one of the types that must have the lastest tech, etc. Or are you comfortable having a great phone, but one that will certainly be out of date in two more years. Out of date doesn't mean that it will stop working, it just won't be as fast or maybe play the latest games that require super GPUs and dual core CPUs.

Droid X right now is (IMHO) Verizon's flagship phone. Very soon Verizon will launch a bunch of other phones that will eclipse the Droid X in one way or another.

Droid X2 will just be a minor update (like Droid ->Droid2). Same form factor, but will have some upgraded hardware. Faster processor (overclocked DroidX, nothing more), software updates (most likely Gingerbread), no LTE, no FFC*, no camera resolution bump, etc. Only thing nice about the rumored specs is 768MB of memory. That's a plus. Lack of dedicated camera button is a huge disappointment for me.

So overall not much of a difference. Certainly not enough for someone with a Droid X to switch, but if both were available today, all other reasons aside, I'd pick up the Droid X2, just because it is the latest.

However, both aren't available today, there are no release dates for the Droid X2, specs haven't been finalized, etc. Do you really want to wait for something that you have no idea when it's going to come? When you wait the couple of months, guess what? You're going to hear about the next phone coming in a few more months, then the next, then the next.

Second reason might be price. Droid X will probably go $49 or less when the X2 gets released. Does that factor for YOU.

Overall, you'll have to make the decision that works best for you. Great thing as consumers whe have a huge choice with Android. Fruit doesn't like you to have choice.

*Don't care what Engaget reports. They change thier opinion faster than thier underware. Guarantee it will not have a FFC.

Don't sweat the EOL too much... I'm not. It's something all products will face. Smartphones EOL's come quuck because the pace of the industry is so brisk! So they don't spend too long supporting any one phone because they have to free up their time and resources to support their new devices.

If you buy a brand new Mustang right now you know Ford will have plenty accessories on hand for it such a s custom floormats, spoilers, upgraded stereo components, seat covers, and some engine hop-ups like a power chip, maybe a race style suspension kit, perhaps a turbo charger, all that jazz. It's their showcar model for tbe time being, so they want to be able to help you out with the things you might need for it.

But in a few years once the all new model hits the sales floor, then they will drop all those things and have all the extras for the new Mustang on hand instead. And now if you want to do things to your car, you'll be looking at aftermarket companies to find what you're looking for. But the car isn't worthless now, it just isn't Ford's #1 priority anymore.

The only time I will opt for a 4G phone is when 4G is available:

1) Where I live
2) Where I routinely travel to

Until then the DroidX is as good as it gets.
