DX to Thunderbolt and back

Ordered the T.Bolt on release day and got it on Monday. After three days of usage I'm back to my DX and couldn't be happier!

I'm probably in the minority as several people I know bought a T.Bolt (some coming from the DX) and everyone else seems happy.

Moto has left a bad taste in my mouth with their locked bootloader and such, but let's see how the Bionic turns out...

Mind giving some details about what you like better on the DX? Or what about the Thunderbolt was bad?

Always interested to see comparisons.

My guess: Battery life?

Be interested to see if they are in a 4g area, right now I'm sitting at 22 hours since last plugged in and right at 60% battery left.

I have drained the battery each time and then a full charge since I got it Friday morning.

So how are you liking the Tbolt compared to the X?

Because it's new and I never had a phone with Sense on it, it's pretty nice. The screen is gorgeous! The ability to switch skins (guess it's like themes) on the fly is pretty cool. There is a guy at XDA that ported 30 of them over and got them all installed, it's been very cool. The HTC widgets for calendar, friend feed(twitter, fb etc) and news look a lot like the themed Launcher Pro Widgets and I love those. Music player widget is very nice too. Up to 8 devices connected thru the built in hot spot, very nice!

Speeds, well 4g is just flat out incredible right now and I am very impressed with VZW's LTE. I actually did a test at my desk at work today. My X was getting 1.44 down, .5 up. AT&T HSPA+ air card: 1.08 down, .5 up. And of course LTE: 15.5 down and 4.4 up.

NOW all that being said, I LOVE my X and that's what I use from day to day. I have the TBolt for work, testing to see if it's a viable solution for us to recommend. Having my X rooted, Romd, themed is the reason I like it but that 4g speed is oh so nice lol

Sorry for the delay in reply - had a busy couple of days.

I'll start off by saying I'm a guy of pattern. If I have something that works well, I can stay happy with that indefinitely. That said, I have been really happy with my DX rooted and Fission'd with LPP on top.

When I got the Thunderbolt I immediately set out to put all my settings exactly the same as I had them on my DX. Not a difficult task except being rooted and the root access apps which wasn't a huge loss for me.

Thins I really disliked about the Thunderbolt compared to DX:

The feel of the phone. I have smaller hands for a guy (I'm 5'8" and weigh about 155). The DX was never a problem being a larger phone but going to the Thunderbolt I always had the feeling the phone was going to jump out of my hands. And when I did make the adjustment to hold it more securely the large volume rocker was often accidentally being hit, and when I adjusted to not hit that button I was accidentally hitting one of the capacitive buttons on the front. I felt comfortable holding it.

Speakerphone under the kickstand was a pretty silly design flaw imo. Same goes for the placement for the charger being under the phone when you are on kickstand. Those are minor and I could get over it.

The overall build quality. I felt as though the phone was pretty poorly put together. If you put your fingernail in between the plastic of the phone and the glass right next to the volume rocker you can feel that it was never secured into place. Maybe I'm nit-picking a little too much here but I felt the built quality was poor on the Incredible and the same goes for the Thunderbolt. I'm starting to get the perception that HTC is just throwing these phones together to get them off the shelves.

Crap. Have to go help my pops on a job. Will edit and finish later...

ok back.

(Still on dislikes)

The processor didn't seem ANY faster than the DX. I had an HTC rep at work saying how it is an improved Snapdragon processor and how much faster it should be (his emphasis was on video) but it seemed like the same old processor from the Incredible.

I guess this next one is a matter of perception. I felt as though this was a hand-me-down 1+ year old Evo made for Verizon. I want something new.

Lastly was the battery. The battery on my DX was clearly better but I wasn't as unhappy about the T.Bolt battery as most people claim. This was likely b/c I'm in a 3G only area. Many claims are that the 4G draw on the battery is pretty harsh but I can't make that claim. In all honesty the battery made it all day at work for me w/o shutting down. I was at about 18% by the time I got home (7:30am-5:20(ish)pm). My DX if used moderately will be in the 60-70% range when I get home.

Things I liked about the Thunderbolt:

The screen on it was 2nd to none. Very bright and deep colors. Size was on par with the DX - both 4.3"

4G. In central CT we don't have 4G yet (although I'm hearing rumors that pockets are being lit up in Hartford) but I hear nothing but great things about the speed.

Conclusion:

All-in-all I didn't feel like I was getting a better phone by using my upgrade on the Thunderbolt. I still LOVE my Fission'd DX and realize I'll probably be giving up things about it that I love no matter what phone I move to next (Uhhg! Please make more phones with physical buttons on the front1!!). The T.Bolt (IMO) is a 4.3" Incredible with 4G. That's simply not enough for me, I want to feel like I'm actually upgrading when I buy my next phone.

Sorry for such a long post. I hope it helps you guys make a decision if you were tossing around the idea of buying the Thunderbolt.

I am 200 miles away from the nearest 4G area and I get good battery life. Same as my Droid X on the T-Bolt.

Keeping both devices and might sell Droid X if I fall in love with HTC TBolt even more. HTC Sense has me convinced - It is the right way to do Android OS, not MotoBLur
