E-Bikes

I had intended to ride early this morning before it got hot but it was windy. I did my chores and it was still windy. I went riding anyway before it got extremely hot with hopes that I might ride again this evening. I only rode thirty miles but should have ridden more. It got dangerously hot so the riding for the day was over. I saw nobody riding, jogging, or walking today. High temps are forecasted for tomorrow as well. I have a lot of lawns to mow so I might not get to ride. Bummer

I rode though it was not riding weather. It was 106° while I was riding which was just a wee bit warm. There was a slight South wind and high humidity to contend with as well. I almost chickened out but with the possibility of rain tomorrow I decided I had best ride today. I logged 65 miles and saw nobody else braving the weather.

It rained a bit pre dawn which kept today's temps a bit lower. I logged 73 miles in two two rides. I saw one other rider this afternoon. My rear tire has not lost any air since I slimed it Monday.
There is a possibility that I will add a day to the daily average for this year. I was originally attempting to set the bar at ten miles a day average but I'm nearing fifteen miles. I need another 170 miles and three days to ride them. If I have too, I'll count the miles I put on the old bike last fall. :)

It rained in the area again this morning. No local rain but it caused the temperature to be even lower than yesterday. I mowed my lawns, went riding, fixed dinner, and went riding again. I'm on a quest. :) I logged 74 miles with the two rides. I only lack 94 miles of meeting my new goal and have two days to ride them. The forecast has decent weather though a bit windy for the next two days.

The cooler weather brought the bike riders out to enjoy the day today. It was fun seeing them. I saw one E-bike among the bikes on my loop. I've seen the guy before. It's a big kid and he looks to be going as fast as his bike will go. It's fun to ride that fast, I'll admit it. I've gotten over the speed rush and ride slower now. I probably average 22mph or so. I have three levels of assist above the level I like to ride in. It's more work but I'm after the benefit of the exercise without reaching total fatigue.

I saw a number of riders today. It was a nice day to be out. I rode twice and logged 81 miles. Tomorrow is the last day to reach my goal and I only lack 13 miles. I should make it. I'm ready to back off a bit. I don't want to ride so much that I lose my love for riding.

I rode yesterday and today early morning. It was nice with very little wind. It's fun riding that time of day for there are quite a few exercising then. They are walking or jogging and riding their bikes and many are in groups of two or three. I hope to ride tomorrow morning but there is a chance of rain just about the entire day.

Today was day one of the second year of riding my newest bike. For the record, 15 miles a day average is where the bar is set for a year. That is 5,475 miles per year. I hope to raise that by a mile or two this year but I'm not going to fight it. The last two days of riding was very enjoyable because I was in no hurry and simply took my time. I only did my old loop of 21 miles each day. That takes an hour to do at a leisure pace. It's a sweet spot for me.

I just did the math... riding at 22 mph it took over 248 hours to ride 5,475 miles.

I rode 43 miles today. It was a very nice cool day that was a real pleasure to be outside enjoying. A few months ago I mentioned that I talked to a guy that had a three wheel E-bike. I saw him again today. It was only the second time that I've seen him. Considering that I spend so much time riding the same road as he, it strikes me odd that I don't see him quite often.

I've been riding my bike daily. Sadly the cool days are gone now. It's that time of year so it isn't surprising to have upper 90s and high humidity. I logged almost a hundred miles on the bike since Sunday. I'm still having fun. It must have been Monday when I spotted a body on the road siding where I ride. I slowed down to find it was a young man just resting. It seems an odd place to crash. He was still laying there awake when I came around the second time. I thought he was pretty odd and I think the thought the same of me. :)

I rode Thursday and today. I only rode my 21 mile loop both days. It is really warming up and it is thinning out the people riding and jogging. It is suppose to be triple digit weather all next week. It will depend on just how badly the heat beats me up while mowing on how much riding I'll do. I will ride what I can.

I rode 34 miles yesterday and 46 today. I'll likely get a ride in tomorrow morning. We are down to just one vehicle and the wife needs it AM. I'm glad to have an excuse to ride while its cooler and hopefully before it gets windy. I was fighting near 100 degree temps and a fierce South wind with gusts into the mid 30mph range this afternoon. That takes the fun out of riding. It was wet for my morning ride. It rained just a little early morning that did nothing but add to the humidity. It was in the mid seventies which made riding pretty nice.

I did ride early Monday and that was nice. It's fun to ride early AM. There is a whole new to me group of enthusiasts working out and enjoying the morning. It's also nice with the temperature lower as well as the wind. Today's ride was late afternoon. It was 102° with a wicked South wind. I was the only idiot out riding for some reason. :)

I rode daily all week and twice a couple of the days. It's been hot but it won't be cooler for a month or more. Might as well get over it and go riding. It's far more desirable to ride in the hot than the miserable cold. I'm closing in on the 6K mark. Monday or Tuesday I'll ride past that milestone. I put that many miles on my Iguana bike but I was thirty years younger.

I had intended to ride early this morning but my back tire was flat. I picked up a roofing nail last night and fortunately made it home before it went flat. Being as the tire was slimed, there was no repairing the hole. I pulled the wheel and replaced the tube. It was almost ten by the time I was riding. I just rode 21 miles, I had hoped for more.

I went riding again this evening. Though it was right at 100° there was zero wind. I wasn't the only cyclist out riding. I couldn't help but notice this morning that I'm about due a new set of tires. The front tire is in better shape than the rear but both are showing high miles. Doing a quick google the average wear is 1k to 3k miles and I am at 6k. The tires have worn well for stock tires. Interestingly enough, like all tires, they are not created equal. I will likely go with a thicker motorcycle type tire vs tires like I have mounted. They should give me a bit more protection from punctures. Naturally they are more expensive but seemed reasonable to me. $130 or so will buy a set. I will do more research before I buy. The heavier tire sounds more difficult to mount and is a bit tricky to balance. They are also a bit larger in circumference so speedometer / odometer will have to be adjusted in the controller for accurate readings. If the tires aren't worth the hassle.. then I won't pay the extra price.

Also check with Juice and see what they suggest, they might have a stronger robust tire for your bike, it's worth a chat or call too see, ;)

I will definitely check to see what they suggest or have available. I want to check the settings in my bike controller to see if it can be changed to account for a slightly different size tire. I did some R&D after posting last night and found some reviews complaining about the additional weight of the tires and the effect on the acceleration and battery consumption. I will know a lot more before I purchase.
I appreciate your suggestion.

I stopped at my local grocer for a few items at the end of my ride today. An elderly gent ended up on the same isle as myself and identified me by my riding clothes as the rider of the bike parked out front. He said I doubt your back tire makes it to September. :) He freaked out when I told him that I had just topped 6K on the bike and the back tire. Turns out he was a cyclist but gave it up years ago due to his age. We had a lengthy conversation about the e-bike and and my health and riding. I bet he becomes a cyclist again. The guy was only a month older than me and looked to be in pretty good shape. Plenty good enough to ride an e-bike.

The guy was right about my tire... it's done. My son ended up with a spare tire that he offered to gift me. It's a new tire and would be fine but I'm in the mood to replace both tires and have them match. I will likely buy next week or the week following. I see my cardiologist and optometrist next week. I hope to have good new from my cardi and schedule a much needed cataract surgery. If all that goes well... new tires.

I've been riding all week. It has been unseasonably cool the last couple of day. It is rare indeed to experience a day in August around these parts that the temperature doesn't get warmer than high sixties. Today was that day. I had to put on my winter bibs and insulated top to keep warm. Sixty three degrees and 25mph wind chill makes for some cool riding when your body is accustomed to triple digit temps. I found a phone in the road today. It was an Android and my guess a S22 or 23. I didn't get past the lock screen. I dropped it off at the police station. I suspect it will make it back into the owners hands. It was misting heavily so it was pretty wet but not dangerously wet. I suspect it took a fall from someone's auto roof. The case was scuffed on one corner but no screen cracks.

I rode 32 miles this morning. It was so nice that I went out to ride again this afternoon. My back tire was flat. I had another nail. I don't understand why such debris is on the local roads and sidewalk. I fixed my flat and took a quick ride to make certain I had the disk brake and derailleur as they should be. It is sprinkling now so I guess I'm done for the day.

I rode this morning and after dinner. It was nice weather without much for wind. It was pretty humid but the temps were in the high eighties so it felt great. I logged 52 miles and saw quite a few out taking advantage of the weather. I'm feeling just a bit of softness in my rear brake. I googled up how to fix it and it looks easy enough if you have the equipment which I lack. Unless it becomes a problem, I'll let a professional add brake fluid when they do a complete maintenance on my bike this winter. I will likely need a new chain by then who knows what. I already have what many would consider a lifetime of miles on the bike. I'm pleased with how well it is holding up.

The weather has allowed me to ride daily this week. I still haven't purchased new tires. I keep looking and then make the mistake of reading reviews. Every tire has the good, bad, and ugly review. :)
I have noticed something odd this week. For no reason that I can figure, I'm getting a few more miles out of a charged battery. I'm riding the same route and riding with the same amount of assist.
The only thing that is different is I removed the back tire and replaced the tube after I ran over a nail. I don't get it but I'm not complaining.

I had a life long friend down today and we went riding. He has a motorcycle but has reached the age where he doesn't feel safe riding it. He has a ten speed bike that he used to ride but his smoked up lungs don't allow enough air for him to ride it now. He and I both thought an E-bike might be a good fit for him to exercise and possibly gain some endurance over time. At least he could dial up the assistance needed to ride. We put that to the test this morning. He enjoyed the ride but became very short of breath a few times. We only rode eight miles and I tried to ride very slow. I think he would do far better if he rode at his own pace instead of following me. I'm pretty sure he'll be buying an e-bike. He lives only a few blocks from the best riding trail in our county. He needs to be doing something or he will rust away. He might even opt to buy my spare bike. The point of riding this morning was to see if an e-bike is a good option for him. I wanted to familiarize him with the different features so he can make an educated purchase if he becomes a consumer. It is so sad to see the effects of a lifetime of smoking cigarettes will do to a set of lungs.

My buddy called me shortly after my morning ride. He said if I was serious about selling the bike, he was my buyer. I would not part with that bike at that price to anyone but him. I helped him load it into the back of his pickup this afternoon and said goodbye to my spare bike. I hope he likes riding enough that it becomes a regular routine. He definitely needs the exercise. He told me that what riding we did ran him very short of air but he felt better than he had in a long time once he rested up. Nobody starts out riding like Lance Armstrong. A little work at a time over time saved my bacon. I think it can help him too. I sure hope so.

The good new is my buddy rode his bike twice today and logged 20 miles and loved it. The bad news is I went to order a second battery for me and Juiced doesn't have them listed on their site. They recently had a sale on them and I am assuming they sold out of them. I can't imagine not selling them for any other reason. They have a lesser battery for sale that would work. It is a 52v battery but only 15ah instead of 19.2ah. I left a message asking when the desired battery might be in stock again. In the interim, I'll have to charge every night.

I received an email from Juiced saying I was on the to be notified list for the the battery that isn't on their website now. I feel somewhat better. I rode 40 miles today in a single ride. That might be the way to ride. I was tired when I was done riding and had no desire to ride again. I like riding twice far more than a single ride. It gives me the chance to rest a bit but mostly it gives my butt a chance to recover. :) I don't know how big time cyclists ride all day.
Two or three hours and I need to stretch my legs.

I've been working around the recent rains and managing getting in a daily ride or two. It has been nice weather temperature wise but uncomfortably humid.
Much to my delight, I've seen an e-bike and sometimes two a day while I'm mowing or riding. I love seeing them become more popular. The more consumers the cheaper they will become. The more riders will create the need for better bike paths and designated lanes. All good stuff
