Eclair 2.0 confirmed for the htc hero

And was your iPhone as feature-filled and stable when it first came out? Perspective is important. As well as patience. ;)

That is so true. When the iPhone first came out, My vouge ran circles around it, but about a year later, it left my phone in the dust. Give it time and patients.

I do a lot of reading on technical things I buy. I try to be very informed before I buy and after.

From my understanding, sprint has lost a lot of money in the last few quarters thus the reason it was very important to get the Hero out asap.

Still losing money and promising to make up for it by the end of the year, which is what they are doing right now, they are going to be in a rush to get 2.0 on these devices. I believe it will arrive by any means they can b4 the end of the year. I see it like this. The hero doesn't have the latest tech. I really don't think it needs it. I it's lagginess is due to poor or rushed coding in the os. With the update will come a better experience and I think this is widely known.

Sure we could all use 1ghz processors. Hell, would all like core I7s in our phones but it just doesn't work that way. Sprint is cheaper for a reason. They can't have the best tech but they can help facilitate the refinement of what they have. This is where they are going to try to make up the monetary dif. this year.

Customer support and then in 2010 they'll laydown the tech with 4g and mifi. This is why I amstaying with the Hero. What's a few months? Everyone has already stated that speed comes with 1.6. with most rooting and such coming from xda and htc people, I'll be able to overclock it a bit till the DRAGOn comes with mifi and then rub it in verizons nose later.

Try that on the Samsung Moment. I doubt it will get 2.0 til Q2 next year from what I hear. and I don't think the HTC community is going to be overly triing to root it for the HTC defectors. Hold straight and I bet b4 years end you'll be smiling. sorry for the long post.
You really missed the mark. Yes, Sprint is not in great shape financially but Dan Hesse is doing everything he can to turn Sprint around.

I dont believe they did rush the Hero. Very much the opposite of what you believe. Sprint has been on board with Google and the Open Handset Alliance for over a year. They didnt rush into the Hero, they didnt rush into Android.

Sprint has also already told everyone NOT to expect an OS update until 2010. Again, not rushing anything here, not even if they wanted to for the Hero. Heres why. HTC is the one that will have to retweak Sense UI, not Sprint. So when HTC is finished doing what they need to do, they will drop 2.0. Not only for the Sprint (CDMA) version, but also for the GSM (Euro) Hero as well. They abandoned any 1.6 updates they were working on because 2.0 came hot on the heels of 1.6.

Im not even sure what you are implying here. Sprint is cheaper for a reason? My guess would be to bring back customers they lost over the years. Im pretty sure they could afford to buy quality phones. Thats not where they are making up the difference. Let me assure you of that.

Good luck with your 4G. Roll out of 4g is well underway, its a shame Sprint doesnt have the money to back the roll out and that Clearwire has to fit the bill for that. Oh, wait, Sprint owns 51% of Clearwire. Roll out of WiMax continues. Chicago will be up and running shortly. Now if they can only sport a battery that will be strong enough to power a 4G handset without the need to charge it every 3 hours. I havent heard anything about where the Dragon will land. Do you know something I dont?

The Samsung Moment wont get 2.0 until Q2? Interesting. Again, where did you say you were getting your information? You do realize that the Moment runs a stock Android system and the Hero has Sense on it right? Its actually a whole lot more likely that the Moment will get 2.0 long before the Hero does due to that reason. I'm tempted to believe that Google is holding off on the drop of 2.0 for the Droid. Once the Droid is launched, it shouldnt be long before 2.0 is released to the wild. Worst case, I could see Sprint holding off both updates and dropping them at the same time, just to keep the complaining to a minimum. Otherwise, I'd say the Moment would be first to get 2.0

I Retracted my comment hoping noone saw it, lol. My ADD gets the best of me sometime. I did read everything I could get my hands on for the last month on the hero and the moment. The guy from Samsung himself said it in an interview about a week back that it would be more likely Q2 for 2.0. I know this for sure. I searched and couldn't find it again and am not going to look all night for it either, thus I deleted my post as I knew how people love to argue. Also, The head of sprint in an interview this week said that it was a priority to get them (Hero, Moment) out immediately. I know it is supposed to be the same phone as other heros and eris etc. but, It has glitches unlike the others of its kind due to software unique to the sprint hero which was rushed or it wouldn't have these problems. I do understand Sprint waited for Google os to mature. I've read and seen all those comments, "CNET" for one. These are things I have read and seen in interviews. That's all I can go by to make my choice. That's why I took my comments off. I'm not really into the flaming threads and hope it doesn't escalate one. It was just my opinion from my intensive search over the last month. My regards.

Played with the moment yesterday at the sprint store. Honestly I can't live without sense, so keeping the hero is a no brainer for me. It had 1.5. Not sure if any of that is relevant, but yea.....

Sense is really great....BUT....the lack of a physical keyboard is really getting to me....thinking of getting the Moment for that reason....perhaps its because Im a sausage fingered 44 year old....:(

i've never been so conflicted abuot a stupid phone before in my life

i *hate* the v-kybd - but i love the sense ui

bottom line... unfortunately, the reviews about the moment are not "amazing enough" to get me to budge from the hero

i'm just not "happy"

no way in the world am i going to ATT - the network, and i don't like apple

no way in the world am i going to vzw - data rates are wayyyy too high (plus, i just don't "like" how the droid looks)

no way in the world am i going to tmo - they just don't have cool phones

so yeah.. i'm just kinda stuck

+1. Thank you, your post captures and voices my exact thoughts on the subject.

This is EXACTLY how I feel right now! I'm going to my local Sprint store to play with a Moment in just a little while. If it isn't enough to make me switch, then I think I will just return my Hero to BB and stick with my Tour for just a bit longer, and keep my upgrade and see what else is on the horizon. I know I want to go Android, just not sure which device!

they key part in regards to the Moment is that it was unclear whether it would be 1.6 or 2.0. HTC has confirmed 2.0 for the Hero. No such confirmation for the Moment. I've got 15 phones to buy and 2.0 will be one of the considerations. All the lag on a work device is not fun. Frustrations with a virtual keyboard aren't fun either.

But has Edaze just stated the Moment runs a stock Android OS. With 2.0 already available for CDMA on the Droid, and HTC's ability to incorporate the Sense UI into it, I would think it's safe to say they would have no problems putting it on the Moment.

being new to android, does that mean we'll be able to just download a simple firmware upgrade or rom flash or do we have to root the phone and go about flashing someone's cooked update. It's just a question of it being official or not. For a work environment I try to not have to deal with homebrewing things on 15 phones. I'm cool with playing with mine, but not non tech savvy coworkers.

Personally I'm more interested in WHEN than HOW. 30 days goes awfully fast when you're stuck with a halfway complete device. What's especially irritating is that even as my iPhone 3GS sits here and stares at me with a much more complete set of features and functionality, I am ultimately rooting for the Hero to pull through in the end.

I so badly want to ditch the virtual machine I have just for the sake of putting music on my phone. Also iTunes SUCKS.

n8,

Take it back. What could possibly change that would make this phone an iPhone...? NOTHING. And waiting for a 2.0 sense/droid OS will not make you fall in love, you've already taken the position (Mentally) of hating this device. I've seen it in every post of yours I've come across. So just take it back. Go buy something else. NO OS CHANGE will ever change the guts and glory that are the hardware of this device. Accept it or don't, it's up to you.

I did take it back, but don't hate me for wishing it had been all that it could very easily be. I didn't want it to be an iPhone, but I did want it to be a good buy for my money.

My complaints about the Hero have been echoed by many people. It simply fails to live up to it's enormous potential, which is maddening.

All of the issues with it are so minor, yet they all add up to a very frustrating user experience that is accompanied by many gaps in functionality.

It's not all negative, there's a lot I like about it. But what it lacks has to do simply with polish, and things not working the way they should. These are things that simply could have been addressed by doing more effective real world testing which I feel HTC has instead decided to use paying customers to do, so they can continue their strategy of unfocused development.

I, like many others, was displeased with my apparent compulsory service as an unpaid HTC beta tester. Sorry if this offends you.

??? iPhone doesn't have problems? Yeah, ok...
People throwing stones shouldn't live in glass houses!

BTW, I have not a single issue with my phone, it is a matter of taste, you really shouldn't make it more than what it is. You sound like an Apple Employee. Everything functions quite well AND all at the same time, as opposed to one at a time, with locked proprietary equipment that costs how much??? You say VALUE for your money? Wow... Interesting. The iPhone is a better value than the Hero, lol, not!!! But you will either love this platform or hate it, as you have so eloquently pointed out, you are the latter.

Just my opinion... Happy trails with you iPhone!

n8,

It doesn't "offend" me that you feel this way. But as I've combed through many threads on this site, I've seen your posts across the board, nearly 100% on every topic you address. If you don't like the iPhone either, fine. But I wonder what it is exactly that you expect from a phone. I wonder what device you've used in the past that hasn't lacked "polish" details. Truth be told, every device with a forum to accompany eventually ends with a laundry list of "what it should've been", a list composed and consistent of the random rants and ravings of unnamed, unknown, non-credible posters. Who knows where they come from, their background in technology and so on.

You and I know there's NOT a perfect phone. And let's be honest, every month developers are making progress by leaps and bounds. Two years ago you'd have never thought we'd have software we have now. And what is your response? Could be faster, could be prettier.

Let me ask you this, if you did "take it back" THEN WHY ARE YOU STILL READING AND POSTING IN THESE FORUMS???!!!! I think I've figured it out, if you returned your device then the only reason you have to be posting ON THE DEVICE FORUM is to spread your negativity. Go somewhere else with the negativity, it spreads like wildfire and clouds the -at one time- helpful and informative discussions so many of us attempt to enjoy.

Anyone else see this from some other view???

Well said TF1984. I could not agree more.

Well said TF1984. I could not agree more.

Thanks. I don't mean to burn anyone. There's always "that guy" ya know? No matter where you are, what it's about, there's always someone spreading the neg...

And he said he took his phone back, yet still on the forum, still asking about 2.0 releases and other things. Why would you care? just my thoughts.

I'm not an apple fan, but HTC has been around for quite a bit. The Pre and 3GS have been out for a bit, both running with better internals than the Hero and the Moment (I own both and am not returning them). Rumors of better processors in Android phones were lingering before both of those phones came about. To see the Hero and Moment come out with essentially the same lackluster processor as its current android brethren and running an OS version that is two versions behind the current one while the Moto Droid comes out with a much better processor and 2.0. Also knowing that other 2nd gen Android phones are probably coming by the 2nd quarter of next year; it's only natural to feel a bit dejected.

It's great and wonderful that Android is making this huge push, but when its competition is running on hardware that is that much better, why would you skimp with your first foray into CDMA? If 1.6 and 2.0 are the versions of the moment, why would you come out with antiquated phone tech and skate around upgrading them to those versions.

It may not equate to a disparity of bringing a knife to a gun fight, but it's like joining the fight with a .22 when you knew your adversary has been packing a .45 for awhile.

I prefer to find a phone a like and stick with it for a couple years, not really having upgrade envy for awhile. Unfortunately, I'm starting to have it already with the Moto's screen, processor, slender build and OS version on top of knowing LG, Acer, Sony and even HTC have phones coming out in the near future sporting all that new tech goodness. Info on the net is just rampant about it since Android is all the buzz.

Outside of being tied to Sprint through work, none of it would be enough to cause me to switch away from Sprint when they are the price leader and the network is just fine. No phone is really worth jumping carriers if it means paying more for service unless it fulfills some unique need.

Just my two cents on it all which is about all its worth.

Also...even if I were to go to something else outside of Android, I'd still roam here just like I roam around precentral still. Want to stay current on things and see if there's any glimmer that I might venture there again (13yr palmOS user and a 1 week Pre user, only 1 week). If Palm suddenly announce the Pre2 with a faster processor, more solid hardware (design and build) and a card slot; I could be inclined to jump back to webOS.

You would care if you were a consumer willing to purchase this device again should it ever fulfill my needs. Why do you care? Enough to comb the forums and read all my posts?

As I stated, I like the phone, it just needs work. Perhaps it will get it, perhaps not. I still read the Pre forum as well in hopes that one of the two will grow into itself.

Why are you such a devout defender of a commercial product? Do you work for HTC?

-n8

@ Dbpaddler... I gotcha, and I have an iPhone and Pre, both in operation currently. But again, it's not like you have to buy the Hero to unvail the processor and memory, it was advertised. So to buy a unit knowing full well of it's power and memory and then complain, well that's just not very bright. (not directed at you).

@n8... HTC employee? Hardly. And I've not tracked all your posts down, but in my regular review of threads and fresh new reading I have noticed your negative comments quite frequently.

n8, the reason I even responded to your original post was in reply to your curiosity about 2.0 and when Hero would have it. And of course the complaints that it didn't come installed or that they had delayed it's initial release.

Well guess what, 2.0 will come to Hero, but again it won't come with a new processor or more RAM. Actually you can cruise over to the website and it will tell you exactly what is changed. There is more integration of information and better graphics. Granted if in the "integration" of Sense with 2.0 HTC re-works a couple bugs, then the processor would be utilized more effectively, but aside from that the higher version will only draw more resources from the already limited resources. So you would be in a lose/lose situation either way.

And WebOS is a Gimmick!

Just wondering, which phone in your opinion is this mythical PERFECT phone? Which phone doesnt have its ups and downs. I have a Pre, Iphone and Hero and visit forums for them all and someone is always complaining about something that one of the rival phones can do that theirs cant. Each phone focuses on whatever the developer wants to highlight and tends to neglect other aspects. Its life and will probably be the way phones are made until the end of time. I cant think of any phone out that couldnt be better than it currently is. Even as the users get updates to the issues they had before the update, they still manage to add a whole new wish list to the phone. Then rant about what it is now lacking and how they can not believe that this has been left out

I have laughed at some of the rants about the hero. There are actually people who would rather have the Hero without SenseUI. Why would u buy a hero and say i love everything except the Hero software. Thats lunacy, but these are the types of people who choose to come to forums and rant and rave

Just wondering, which phone in your opinion is this mythical PERFECT phone?

Well, take the Hero hardware, add the iPhone's reliability and smoothness, and the Pre's hackability and fantastic notification scheme, and you'd have a pretty awesome phone.

The Hero would be a great phone for me with less bugs and a few more features, I'd buy one again in a heartbeat. Some things are just downright silly, like having to use two different mail clients for Gmail and IMAP.

That's why I still read the forums, 'cause I'm hoping it improves so I can buy another one. Even though here in Milwaukee Sprint's service isn't quite as good as AT&T, the price is right and they've almost got it right with the phones, too.

So which phone are u gonna be using now? Since there is no phone that meets those expectations?? I agree that your makeshit phone sounds nice there. lol.............

I think the real problem is that so many people who buy phones the day the device comes out are craving the newest, best thing on the market. It use to be when you bought the BEST, it would be the best for a year or so...

Well now we have a bunch of these people who are living in a world where a struggling economy is pumping out whatever it can to rejuvenate it, and the best is coming out once every month or 2 from several major providers. Get used to it. No matter what phone you buy, there will be a better one out in a month. There will also be 2 or 3 even better ones than that already released overseas, that will be here in 2-6 months. And then there will be revolutionary software around a year from now that will make all of these phones look like crap.

So instead of constantly projecting yourself into the future and drooling for an update to get your phone on par with this months best, I have a suggestion. Use your phone. There is no electronic device that doesn't have a flaw.

Atleast we are being brought up to the 2.0 sometime soon. I am sure it will be just in time for Android 2.4 so you guys can spend weeks speculating if we will get that update.
