[Edge Max] For those on Unlimited Data thru Verizon

You know one thing I didn't ask about...do they still replace devices if something happens to it for up to a year? That's an interesting thought because if not, it'd pretty much force insurance.

Sorry for the self quote but I'm continually finding out more here. It does indeed force insurance. To the point that it's required with edge. Cost is $8/month regardless of phone chosen. How does that compare to other avenues for insurance, I've never used any.

That needs to be found out.

I saw an article awhile ago about Edge and whoever the one top guy from Verizon they were talking to said they are not going to drop the price of your plan.

I'm not sure about Verizon, but T-Mobile's Jump $10 fee includes total device insurance. I would imagine that the manufacturer's 1 year warranty would still be valid though at the very least.

Yeah, due to my unknown $6 credit, I'd feel a hit of $41 to my bill each month. $27 to fund a $650 device + $8 for mandatory insurance + $6 I was credited previously. That's a bit of a rate hike.

$41 seems like a good per phone total charge rather than an increase. :D

Part of me says go with Max because you'll probably get screwed somewhere down the road with less data. The other part says stick with unlimited because they will never discontinue it.

Wait. We HAVE TO get insurance? The manufacture warranty won't cover?

It actually makes a bit of sense for them to require insurance. It's their phone, not yours and a regular warranty doesn't cover dropping/water/screens etc. When you give them their phone back it has to be in working order, not broken.

Yeah they're acting as a bank so it's technically theirs until you hold the title at 24 months. Which is essentially what they were doing in the past with contracts but the difference is that we formerly made a down payment in the ballpark of 1/3 the cost of the device up front. In the Edge format, they are more open to default liability. Still not sure I buy into that fully but yeah I somewhat see the reasoning.

This may be a consideration for me - need to see if I want to switch carriers though first.

I am still on my Dad's family plan, but with me getting married next year it may be time to move me and the fiancee onto our own plan and then I have the choice of whatever carrier I want.

Hmmmmmmmm.

Hey Stig, good to see you broski. :D

If you're happy with your current provider AND you run GSM phones AND you like Nexus devices AND you're allowed to bring your own device, you may be money ahead to stay where you're at. I'd love to buy a $300 Nexus outright but you have to run a vzw branded cdma phone here. Which means $600+ pricetags.

I'm currently on Verizon so I'd be giving up unlimited for this as if I stay on Verizon I'd probably get screwed when they FORCE everyone off unlimited data.

I read the first sentence two ways:

1. People that want to switch to Edge are concerned how it will affect their unlimited data.

2. They are dropping a hint that unlimited is going away...at some point.

Fist post of thread has been updated.

If my Verizon Edge phone is lost, stolen or damaged, will I still need to make my monthly payments?

Yes. You’ll continue to be responsible for your monthly payments under your Verizon Edge contract. We encourage you to sign up for insurance to protect your Verizon Edge phone.

That's more than what I pay per month for service with T-Mobile, lol. I pay $32.40 thanks to their awesome $30 plan. :D

Oh how I wish tmobile had coverage here. They sell plans here. They advertise 4G. But a coworker just went that route and spent almost the entire time not even getting EDGE. It was totally worthless and he backed out after a few weeks and then went through a huge debacle to do so.

Yeah, I can imagine how frustrating that can be. They really are getting things better because they use to be worthless in my area as well. If they win a good amount of 600MHz spectrum at auction next summer and aggressively start deploying it, the ball game will change dramatically.

This is an agonizing decision for me.

I blow through data, folks. Seriously. I may slam through 8-10 GB a month: half of it is whatever the heck Google Play Music is doing (I have no music pinned). So trading my $9.95/ month unlimited data (and that deal is on each of four smartphone lines) for $50/month for 8 GB + $10/GB overage would send our bill skyrocketing.

Granted: 2 of our lines use very little data (Darling Bride and her sister). But my son & I rack up some serious GBs. Problem is, if I DON'T convert now and they spank us later with full price, our bill will skyrocket even more.

T-Mo LTE is in town, but all I have at my address is "Satisfactory" coverage. Not really an option ATM.

What to do???

:(

Yes. I stream it all day long. But it should STREAM. This thing is storing data on my Nexus at a staggering rate: about once a week I go to Settings --> Apps --> All and Sort By Size. Invariably, Google Play Music is number 1 with well over a Gig of data. I have to clear cache and data, then log back into Play Music, before making a nandroid or the zip would be enormous. And that's WEEKLY!

What it's downloading is beyond me. But to answer your question... yep. All day long.

It'd be awfully tough to switch in your case with that old $10 data deal Chief. On 4 lines, you save $960 per year with that. And if you use in excess of 6GB, you still won't be ok with this plan. If they do ever yank unlimited, I agree it'll probably be a serious crossroads moment where a new infrastructure technology is brought about.

But here's the kicker...they could easily use that same moment to force all the Edge Max folks off their 6GB and onto 2GB. Because of your somewhat unique circumstances, I can't imagine this being the best route. I'm not even sure it is for any of us but losing $10 data times 4?

You bet: since that promotion went into effect in January 2010, I figure we've saved over $3400 that would have gone to Verizon  :D

So I suppose it's a no-brainer... keep hold of this deal until they literally pry it away from us. Even if we eventually have to pay pull rate for VoLTE or whatever comes up, we'll be at least $4k ahead so that's not so painful.

Plus my new phone fund (which is funded to buy Darling Bride and me a new phone, full retail, every two years) can be designated for something else.

:)

I have a question regarding Max. Should I change my unlimited to 6GB, am I required to purchase phones on the payment plan or am I still eligible for 2 year contracts and subsidized phones?
