[Edge Max] For those on Unlimited Data thru Verizon

Here is the boat I am in.

450 minutes + unlimited text = $59.99
Unlimited Data = $30
Total = 89.99 /month

Plus $600 - $700 for a new flagship phone off contract. Over two years, that adds up to $600 + (89.99 * 24) = ~$2760

On the EDGE program:

Smartphone fee (unlimited talk and text) = $40
6GBs of Data = $30
Cost of new phone (@ $600) per month = $25 (plus option to trade in for a brand new phone once per year (point at which 1/2 of phone is paid off)without it affecting my monthly cost at all)
Total per month = $95
Total for two years = $2280

So, this edge program, for me at least, is basically trading unlimited data (I actually only average about 3.5 GBs per months anyway) for $240 a year in my pocket and a brand new flagship phones once a year. Plus I save on any upgrade fees or new phone activation fees, etc. that they currently charge when replacing phones.

As far as I can tell, the insurance is not mandatory, just highly recommended. But still, $8 a month is only $192 over two years, so I am still up about $300 over the two years.

Without the insurance, I will only be paying $5 a month more than I pay now, but I get a brand new phone every year.

Where did you get that $40 number? I was trying to ask them about the "base cost" of the plan and they said there is no such thing. Instead, I'd just keep paying what I'm already paying and on top of that, add the cost of the device/24. Which would be much higher for both myself and yourself since you're currently at $59.99.

$40 makes way more sense to me and I hope that's the case for everyone because then it might work. I wonder if I got a rep that wasn't up to speed on this yet?

The 40 dollar is the share everything rate per smartphone. If you're using Edge Max, you're keeping your current voice + text plan and your unlimited plan at 30 dollars gets replaced with 6 gb for 30 dollars. or at least that's how I've interpreted it. I say this because that csr said that the 6 gb is yours and isn't shared, so therefore the 40 dollar share everything rate wouldn't apply.

Hmm I wonder if my situation is different because I'm on an older Nationwide 1400 plan not what they officially call the "share everything" plan. Although we do indeed share those minutes. Very difficult to get a straight answer from vzw as usual.

I would imagine that plan would stay, and then which ever line you forfeit unlimited for would get the 6gb plan. I'm assuming this would be a per line data plan like they currently off for those grandfathered into the old family plans.

I'm the only one with unlimited data so we are talking my phone. Not quite sure what my cost would be then? Guess I'll have to call them and get another opinion from another CSR.

Sorry, apparently I was wrong about the $40 for unlimited talk and text. That is currently the only plan they offer for smartphones, but with the new program, you only get to change part of your plan and cannot change the talk and text part even if you wanted to. I just confirmed that with a VZW CSR, but then again, we all know how reliable they can be... so basically, who the hell knows at this point???

That basically means I would pay the same amount over two years...but still get the option to upgrade after 1 year with no change in my payments...but I lose unlimited data...IDK what Ill do.

The CSR just said "if there were anything I could do to change the plan to better fit your needs, I would do it"

My reply: "hmmm a plan that actually fits my needs....now there is a concept VZW should look into"

Yeah if there's one thing Verizon reps are known for, it's knowledge of their company products/policies

That's pretty much the same thing I got on my call a few hours ago. We stay on the same plan we are currently on in terms of talk/text. The Edge eligible phone will just change in that it's no longer unlimited data, and the bill would go up by the new phone cost / 24 (+ all tax on full phone purchase on first months bill only). That tax thing is no joke either. For a $649 phone and a 6% county tax, that's $38.94. Then add the cost of the phone payment of $27.04 and you have an additional $65.98 on the first bill. Every bill after that would just be $27.04 higher than what we're paying now. Not including insurance if added. And yeah, I did get a different story this time that aligns with what others are saying. Not mandatory but highly recommended.

VZW will have to pull unlimited data from my cold dead hands. In other words, if they force me off it I will be done with VZW and will go to a prepaid plan like ST etc

the problem with your numbers is that you're paying for texting. There's no reason to pay for texting these days with google voice available and how well it integrates with android

Just keep in mind that even if it seems like a good deal and you will come out a bit ahead, that even after you have paid that phone off, it is not really yours.
If you leave VZW, you must return the phone. Unless I am misunderstanding it, and confusing their plans with other similar plans, you are only renting their phone on the Edge plan. If for some reason the phone is damaged and in disrepair, you are disqualified for this plan.

No the phone is yours if you keep it the full 2 years. Basically Verizon is giving you a guaranteed trade in price of half the value of the phone, and letting you split the cost over 24 months.

But if you are buying a top tier phone on or shortly after release day, you can get pretty close to that by selling it yourself after a year. And still keep unlimited.

Here is one thing I don't understand. Verizon was just smacked down for trying to charge it's tiered data customers for tethering. So all tiered data, whether on share everything or the 2GB individual plan can tether free. But here on max they are doing it again, trying to make you pay an additional $20 per month to be able to tether. What's the deal?

Heres another issue that came up. Since I currently only have 450 minutes, I have nothing to switch to. There are no other talk and text plans other than the unlimited talk and text for $40 on their share everything plans which they will not switch me to without charging me $80 for 6GBs instead of the $30. So, I am stuck with 450 minutes until I get a share everything plan. This "deal" keeps getting worse and worse. And they no longer offer a 12 month payment plan on new phones. So there really is no way around paying full price at the time of purchase...or ebay.

Woah!!!! Hold the phone here!!!!

I just upgraded my device to an HTC ONE on the Edge program, and kept my unlimited data! No joke! Heres proof:

So far so good. Ive gotten several emails confirming my order and even a text asking me to text back "yes" that I approved the order. I have printed all the documentation that states my service plan and my EDGE agreement. If they come back and try to force me out of it, Ill fight it as much as I can, if I lose, Ill just hand the phone back to them and make them refund it all and switch to t-mobile.

BTW, i am about 5 months away from my upgrade period, which I was told I needed to be upgrade eligible before I could do the EDGE thing. So, VZW has failed several times over with this.

Did you have to click on a confirm button before you finished? Meaning, were you just messing around and that happened so you went with it? Or did you just say heck with it and switched to Edge and that was a nice surprise?

Yup, was kinda just messing around with it to see what options they were actually going to offer online. It gave me the option to keep my current plan, so I selected it. Then it went to the EDGE payment plan agreement, so I electronically signed that. Got to the payment screen and it said 61.22 owed today (25.22 for first installment + 36 for tax on total price of phone) so I put in my CC # and paid it. Then I got an email and text telling me to log into MYverizon to agree to the EDGE plan again. Did that. Got the text yes to agree to order text. Sent that. Got another email confirming everything I just did (the pic in my previous post was copied from that last email) So it looks like everything is finalized. I even went back to MYVerizon and clicked on the button to upgrade my phone and it sent back an error saying that I already have a new device waiting to be activated on that line so I cannot upgrade until that device is activated. I think I might be okay at least until I go to trade in the One in a year. We shall see if anyone catches it and forces me out.
