Root editing build.prop?

Ok so I am working on a small project to port the xperia play native ps1 emulation to my esteem.I finally got the ps pocket,ps store and ps developers suite to install but I can't access the ps store because my phone is telling the servers that its an esteem and not an xperia play.
So my question is: can I change my phones designation in the build.prop to the xperia play designation without having any adverse affects to the phones operability?

Make a backup of your current build prop and find out. Not like you can't just push the backup if something goes wrong, which i think is unlikely with just changing the name. Idk though
 
Ok that didn't work. This is what I did:
ro.build.user=semcuser
ro.build.host=semchost
ro.product.brand=SEMC
Ro.product.name=r800I
ro.product.device=r800I

That was under properties. Should I have changed it under
Product package meta-data instead? This is all very confusing.
If I can get this to actually register as an expedia then my ps mobile suite sdk will finally recognize it and I can push all of my xperia games to it from there!

I think I got it. I have been talking back and forth with poo-tang on xda and he gave me some very good insight.
"just change the name of your device", easy enough.
 
No it sure didn't, so the first time I renamed the other files in the post above my phone would freeze in the middle of my boot animation and just keep cycling and freezing. So I did a restore and am currently renaming one file at a time, rebooting, installing, uninstalling, rebooting, and so on. Until I get to something.
I'll keep ths updates coming, though.

I have narrowed down the culprit that wasn't letting my phone reboot:
Ro.product.name= lge_bryce
Cannot be renamed to:
Ro.product.name=R800i_1253-4437

Is there an xml file or something like that connected to build.prop functions?
Forgive me if I am not using the correct file names and what have you. I am still new
