heya,
OK, I'm a Christian, and while I certainly have views on pornography, I really don't like the idea of censoring things.
It's a slippery slope, and you eventually end up in a situation like China, where censoring pornography is a euphemism for censoring criticism of government, or of any views that you don't like.
E.g.:
Chinadaily BBS - China Watch - Should China censor porn sites ??
Also, while I don't agree with the tone or language of grainysands, I have to say he/she makes a good point - ultimately, it's *your* job to parent your child. Firstly, why on earth would you give your kid a $500 phone? It makes no sense. Heck, I don't think I even got a phone till I was what, 15? My parents tried to give me one when I was younger (around 10, I think?), and the school actually tried to confiscate it.
I eventually got a phone when *I* bought it, from memory. Make your damn kid work and earn their keep, and they might treasure it a bit more. I certainly wouldn't have been able to afford a Nexus and a data plan on my wages from the local electronics store.
Anyhow, that aside, if your argument is you need to contact your kids, what's wrong with a cheap $50 Nokia? Seriously.
If you want to let your kid surf the net, well, there's the risk of pornography. Sorry, but it's out there. You can't keep watch on your kid 24/7. But then, if you say, let your kid off the leash and let them browse the newsagency, Gosh, lo and behold, they might see a pornography magazine. Ultimately, it comes down to 1. Do you trust your child? and 2. Have you explained to them what is good and Lordly, and what is not?
If you really feel that way, install something like CovenantEyes, and get them to let somebody in their youth-group keep them accountable, either a brother/sister there or a leader. Not you, because trust me, as a kid (or just out of teenagehood), nothing jives them more.
On another note, I really hate the generalisation of people on this board about Christinas. It's nearly as bad as Slashdot, with all the anti-Christian rhetoric. You realise that ironically, you're making yourselves appear to be the rabid, frothing-at-the-mouth fanatics that you try to paint us to be? Most Christians hardly fit the clownish stereotypes you use - they're not perfect, certainly, but they're generally open-minded, and are happy to discuss your beliefs with you. They'll tell you why they believe the things if you ask them, but they certainly don't force you to believe what they do - you can't *force* somebody to love God.
On a final note, I've had my phone for a week, and I have yet to see a single pornography or girly app. Seriously, I don't know where the heck you guys are looking. Admittedly, most of the apps I've got I either knew by name beforehand (e.g. Dropbox, or OliveReader), or I did a specific search. Still, it'd be damn hard to find a bad app, at least in my experience.
And it's kinda ironic how I found this threat, I was trying to find a bible app for my new Nexus, haha, and I used the keyword "bible".
Cheers,
Victor
