Root Eris All things ROOT THREAD: Apps and ROMS Updated 05/06/2010

I am having the same issue here. Rooted my Eris last night without any real issues (KaosLegendary ROM). I started messing with the SetCPU setting and things were fine (got it quite zippy, actually). Then I got a phone call and Sense crashed. I cannot do anything, since it crashes and I force close, and then it crashes again repeatedly until I just turn off the phone... The phone is worthless right now as far as I know.

I should say this is my first post and am definitely a noob (though I have had success tracking and troubleshooting on my own in the past)

SetCPU settings were:
Main: 768/480
Screen off: 480/245
Failsafe: Temp 44.3 C / 480/122

Also, had installed a number of apps (Pandora, Dictionary.com, Epicurious, USA Today... and had some widgets running (weather, clock, news, pandora)

Any ideas would be great!

Crooze,

Sounds like your phone may not be stable at 768MHZ.

We also probably need a little more info from you re. what exactly is going on:

1. Did you take a Nandroid backup? (can you restore to a previous, safe state?)

2. Did you enable "set-on-boot" in setCPU? (un-enable it if you can)

3. Does you phone still boot-up? (can you change clock settings in setCPU?)

4. Have you tried flashing a different ROM? (problem with KaosLegendary?)

5. Have you tried posting a question over on XDA in the dev's thread? (you'll have to register there in order to post: [ROM]KaosLegendary V.17 [05/19] [OC] [A2SD] - xda-developers; they are very helpful, but it pays to be polite and patient with the devs :))

Thanks for the help. And answers are 1). Yes 2). No 3). Yes, but I was unable to do anything on the phone due to the Sense crashing.

In the end, number 4 worked. I switched over to Evil Eris 3.0 last night using the same process, mounting the phone via USB, etc. Things have been running very nicely since I switched ROMs. However, I have not installed a task killer -- will the battery hold up? Or is that not necessary? That is really the only thing I am worried about for now.

Also, apparenltly Evil Eris 3.0 does not have SetCPU built in, and frankly I am not even sure I need it. With this ROM speed has improved noticeably somehow...

Crooze,

Glad you got things working again. I haven't run a task killer for months now (Android will auto-kill things that are not being used automatically in the background, and 2.1 seems to do a better job than 1.5 ever did), so you might not need one. You can always kill a rogue tasks if you need it in Settings -> Manage Applications. As far as speed goes, I didn't enable overclocking on my ROM for several weeks, lol. Even then, I only run things at 710MHz which is a pretty low, stable setting. Rooted ROMs usually are snappier than the base 2.1 since there's bloatware and such removed and a little more memory available.

Good luck!

Do yourself a favor and do not install a task killer. Instead root users should use an app called autokiller. It's not a task killer it's more like memory management. It will keep your phone's memory available at an established level. I usually use optimum as my setting, some have been successful running Strict but I do not recommend anything above that.

Thanks again for the tips... Since the switch last night I have had no issues. Nice to know a task-killer is not necessary. My phone has been unplugged for about six hours and I have done a litte bit of e-mail, market browsing, downloading/installing and battery is stil ~80%. Seems fair to me!

I would say to anyone who is thinking about rooting, it is an easy process and as long as you follow the instructions, you should be fine...just make sure to back-up. My Eris is now much better and performs the way you would expect it to (the lagginess was killing me). This forum certainly helps answer questions!

Okay, so I want to try my first new ROM. I want to flash Evil Eris from here ( [ROM]-[6/3/2010] Evil Eris v3.0(HTC Sense UI-Android 2.1)[Evil Eris v4.0 ANNOUNCED!] - xda-developers ), but which one should I download?...2.0.1 or 3.0? Do I need anything special for this or just put it on the top level of my sd card and then just boot into recovery and do a Nand backup?

Thanks,
PC49

PC49,

Haven't used either ROM, so I can't advise either way. You'll need to look in the developer's thread for flashing/wiping/installation instructions that might be special to that ROM. Normally, you would just download to top-level of your /sdcard, boot into recovery like you said, make a Nandroid backup (make sure its successful), do the wipes per the developer's thread, and flash the ROM.

Good luck!

P.S. don't forget, its a good idea to verify/validate the MD5 sums of these ROMs after you download and copy to your /sdcard. This will ensure that the files are full, complete, and not corrupted. I put some info. on how to get and use and MD5 sum utility in this thread: http://androidforums.com/all-things...oot-troubleshooting-guide-htc-droid-eris.html

SA,

That did it! I just put EE 3.0 on the top level of my SD card, ran the Nand backup, and then flashed the new ROM. It worked just fine. Now the question is, how do I go back? I ran another Nand backup, did the factory wipe, and then flashed engtools3.zip, but when I rebooted, I got EE 3.0 again.

The engtools3.zip just enables root access on the current ROM you are running. So, it sounds like you rooted an already-rooted EE 3.0 :D.

Custom ROMs already have root access, so you don't need to flash engtools3.zip (its just used when you want to enable root on the non-rooted 2.1 (but you needed the custom recovery partition first in order to flash things)).

Did you want to go back to where you were before you flashed EE 3.0? If so, just do a Nandroid restore of the backup that you took before you flashed EE 3.0.

Does this make sense?

SA,

That makes perfect sense. Again, thank you! That worked out perfectly and now I'm loving my new ROM.:)

Hello I am kind of new to this but I have reverted my phone back to 1.5 from kaosfroyo, I cannot update my phone back to 2.1 and I don't know what I did wrong, help would be greatly appreciated. My phone came up with a system update when starting for first time on 1.5 but the install failed and it said it was newer than the main version??

So quick question. Im on a hero but the wife has the Eris. Im sure my answer is buried somewhere in one of these threads but: Can you root from the official Verizon 2.37.605.4 update or do I need to flash back to a previous release? Thanks all, talked the wife into android from her storm, and all she can say is how slow it is. Help me show up BB.

Yes, the "new" root methods (i.e., those that use wag3slav3's mid.txt exploit like http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html or http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...is-app-apk-no-pcs-no-scripts-needed-easy.html or http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/125436-detailed-leak-root-tutorial.html) will work on any version of Android or HBOOT version.

The "universal" thread has lots of pictures and detailed instructions. The "1-click" thread is pretty terse and takes a little reading into and inferring. The "detailed" thread is basically a manual one using the Android SDK. Your comfort and skill level will probably determine which one you choose.

Read through these and see if you have any other questions. Thanks and good luck! :)

intaminfan08,

Sounds like you are getting the "main version is older" error message.

Are you trying return the phone to stock 2.1 (i.e., unroot it so you can return it)? And how are you trying to return back to 2.1?

I have an idea as to what you could do, but what you you really want is someone that knows for sure ;) (i.e., I don't want to suggest anything unfruitful for you to do or do any harm).

I would suggest that you post a new thread with a title of say "return to stock 2.1 from 1.5 (main version is older)" and hopefully that will get the attention of those that can direct you best. Be sure to include as much information and detail as possible about what you've done and what you would like to do.

Cheers!

I recently rooted my droid eris (stock 2.1) with the 1 click root for eris app. I used the Eris Market Fix app and it told me to restart my phone, and I did. Well when my phone came back on, there was a big x over the signal bars, it stayed that way for over 24 hours even after two hard resets. I followed the steps on http://androidforums.com/474953-post1.html to get my Eris unrooted and back to 1.5 as a last resort, and well I got my signal back! Now when I instal certain apps it says "Cannot instal "app name" on this phone. Apps like Days Until and the Eris Rooter app. I took the OTA update supposedly for 2.1 and well my phone is definately not 2.1 but the about phone in settings says my phone successfully took the update. I'm just wondering if it's adviasable to re-root my phone again and/or how to get those apps to work with my phone again? If it's advisable to re-root my phone could somebody give me a complete dummies guide to doing the root, I've tried over 10 websites, popular ones and I don't understand the terms being used, so I'm asking for the guide to be really thorough and if it uses terms at least explain what they are. And can anyone try and help me understand why my phone lost signal for 24 hours until reverting back to 1.5? Thank you very much!

@scary alien thanks for the response, flashed xtrSENSE4.0.6.1 and it is running hella smooth. Completely different phone, I have it oc'ed to 710, with no problems. Are there any extras to flash for this rom, or is it pretty complete? Ill keep digging around. Just wanted to say thanks.

mattheis,

Hey, no problem--happy to have helped-out. I haven't flashed that ROM (yet), so I don't know too much about it other than a lot of the good comments its getting.

Have you seen this thread here on AF? http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...4-0-6-1-apps2sd-oc-jit-flash10-htc-sense.html ? There's also the dev's main thread over on XDA: [ROM] [8/20/2010] xtrSENSE4.0.6.1 [apps2sd,oc,jit,flash10]- HTC Sense - xda-developers

Cheers!

I am still getting error Failed remote not allowed message. I have to send my phone back and needs unrooted. I flashed the downgrade.zip. What am I missing?
