Root Eris half-brick

Whew! That does look like a process. Good stuff though. I will definitely get to it either tonight or tuesday night (big test coming up tomorrow).

Huge thanks. Looking forward to it, should be fun to see what happens.

Scary Alien. Thanks for gathering all of that info, great stuff. I've downloaded the required files to my computer EXCEPT for the Eris_RootROM_v2.19.605.1_PB00IMG.zip file. It's no longer available for download. Any idea where to get that file? Or is there an accpetable replacement? Also, I'm wondering where to put the stuff onto my phone. Would it be better to put it on phone memory or to the SD card. Thanks.

Did you also very the MD5 checksums and file sizes (very important)?

The RUU / rom.zip replacement stuff is all done on your PC (you're trying to get the base root ROM that will enable you to get a the S-OFF HBOOT installed so you can have other options for flashing the alternate custom recovery).

Nothing needs to go on your phone yet / at this point...

Ok, sounds good. Did you see the edit to my post above? You got back to me a little too fast. :) I couldn't download Eris_RootROM_v2.19.605.1_PB00IMG.zip. IS there an acceptable alternative or another location where I could download it? I attempted a google search for it but it looks like most places have removed it from their file sharing sites.

The multiupload link for the base root ROM still works for me: Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

I just tried it and it brings up a ton of download site options...

Is that the link you used?

If you can't find it anywhere else, I have it on my Dropbox:

Well, I feel stupid now. I just clicked the download at the top of the page and it was a no go. Didn't notice all the options further down.

Thanks. Now let me check the files and I'll get this started. (Had to leave there for a bit for some shopping with the wife.)

So, I've spent the past while working on getting fastboot and ADB onto my computer. Now, what is this hardspl I keep reading about? Am I going to be able to fastbook if I can't get to recovery and flash the spl file???

Thanks for everyone's help!

Never heard of "hardspl" in terms of the Eris...dunno...

Now, you know / remember reading what I wrote above that the RUU / rom.zip trick might not work for you phone and you'll not be able to flash an alternate recovery via fastboot, right?

There's a chance that the RUU won't be able to get the S-OFF HBOOT installed from the base root ROM...

Just didn't want to get your hopes up too high or have you setup stuff that you ultimately might not use (today)...its always good to learn new stuff, though.

Good luck!

edit / P.S. here's an adb installation guide that I wrote (El Presidente posted the thread for me): http://androidforums.com/faqs/443072-adb-guide.html

in case that's helpful.

ok, so I think I've got all the hard stuff done. Replaced the rom.zip etc etc and now am trying to figure out this fastbook usb mode. I plugged the USB into the phone and turned the phone on with both the 1. end call and 2. send buttons pressed. I get a screen with 3 skateboarding droids at the bottom and fastboot usb in red below some of the phones details (s-on hboot, microp touchpanel, etc etc)

Where do I go from here?

Well, the bad news is that if you still have the S-ON HBOOT, you don't have a lot of options at this point since you need the S-OFF (unsecured) bootloader in order to be able to use fastboot to flash a different custom recovery :(.

So, you ran the RUU, replaced the rom.zip file with the base root ROM's PB00IMG.zip file and tried to finish running the RUU?

Did you get any errors, etc. or did it run to completion (I can't believe that it would have since you still have an S-ON HBOOT).

HA HA. No, I don't think I did all of that. When you say ran the ruu what does that mean exactly?

OK, so after writing this and just thinking for alittle bit, I'll try to do the RUU rom reset again. Brilliant little piece of advice if it works, or even if it doesn't work, well worth remembering.

Thanks I'll post results soon.

Here's what I've done. I opened the RUU, it loaded all of it's stuff onto my computer, I think found the RUU rom.zip and replaced it (in the same location) with the eris_rootrom zip file and renamed it rom.zip. I didn't finish running the RUU installation or whatever it is I just closed it. Should I retry? Will the rom.zip be correct since I prematurely closed the RUU installation? Should I have my phone connected (USB to computer) and turned on when I am running the ruu?

Sorry this is so confusing for me. I'm sure I'll look back and realize I was trying to be way to meticulous about it all. lol. I've learned a ton already though. I see how this could be seriously addicting. You guys have been way helpful. Thanks for the ADB guide. Very helpful, although I think I had done most of those steps. Great write up, wish I had it a little earlier. :)

Yes, you'll have to run the RUU to as far as it will go and yes you'll have to start-over and re-replace the rom.zip with the base root ROM.

Be sure to connect the phone to the PC via the USB cable and then put the phone in FASTBOOT mode (it'll become FASTBOOT USB when connected via the USB cable).

Just read and follow the instructions carefully...I didn't put every little detail in there, so don't feel bad. Just let us know when you have a question.

Good luck (crossing fingers that you'll get S-OFF).

sorry if I'm getting bogged down in the details, but I'm wondering how to do this:

"Be sure to connect the phone to the PC via the USB cable and then put the phone in FASTBOOT mode (it'll become FASTBOOT USB when connected via the USB cable)."

Do I physically need to do something or does the phone automatically become USB fastboot when the phone-USB cord-computer connection is made? I've just tried running the RUU with the phone plugged in as per RUU instructions. I thought we had it! htc screen came up and it was obvious that the computer and phone were trying to get 'er done. Then a message popped up no the RUU screen that said the wrong RUU was selected for my phone and that I would need to select the correct RUU and try again. I'm 99% sure that I have the right RUU though so I'll try it a couple more times and double check my work.

Thanks again. Updates coming soon! :D

To put your phone in FASTBOOT mode, you'll do the double-keypress of the buttons on the front of the phone like you did before to see the HBOOT screen (i.e., where you saw the "S-OFF", "MICROP", "TOUCHPANEL", etc.) from a powered-off state. That should very quickly display the FASTBOOT screen (with the three small skating Androids at the bottom of the screen).

If you have your USB cable plugged-in (and you should) to between your phone and PC, then it will say "FASTBOOT USB" instead of just "FASTBOOT".

This is the state that your phone needs to be in to run the RUU--don't forget to replace / update the rom.zip file as described earlier.

OK, started the RUU, replaced the rom.zip file, continued the RUU and got this message

[error 140]: Bootloader version error

The ROM Update Utility cannot update your Android phone.

Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again.

Click 'Exit' to quit.

Yeah, I was a little afraid of this, too...(looks like the RUU is probably running into the "main version is older" error or something similar).

Looks like you are experiencing basically the same thing that 13kyl did in his thread: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/371983-help-save-brick.html (we weren't able to save it :().

Feel free to read through that thread (that's what I'm doing now, too).

Lemme think for a minute here...and maybe doogald will have another idea for something to try...

Darn. I'll start readin.

Let me know if things in that thread look / sound very similar to what you are experiencing...(it realy does to me).

You should also know that when erisuser1 got involved and there was no real solution, we knew we were at a brick wall.

I'm going to cogitate a bit on this, but it feels very deja vu-ish re. what we tried back in July for 13kyl...

zloetakoe,

By the way...I did forget to ask you if you checked the S-ON or S-OFF status on the HBOOT screen...

Can you do that for me now?

When SoSicWiTiT did the original RUU / rom.zip replacement thing, he got an error, too, but it got far enough into the process that the bootloader was in fact replaced with the unsecured (S-OFF) one.

Let me know (I'm not hopeful, but didn't want to forget to ask).

Just to ask this question: since you've run the RUU several times, did you look to find all of the copies of rom.zip in your temp directory? I've never run it myself, but is it possible that each time that the RUU runs it creates a new version of temp files?

Just to ask that question ...

doogald, thanks for watching...glad for any other ideas you might have.

Yeah, when I've run the RUU in the past (i.e., in 13kyl's thread), the RUU creates a whole new set of temp files every time and cleans 'em up afterwards.

Hopefully, zloetakoe had to re-find the rom.zip each time and replaced it with the proper base root ROM's PB00IMG.zip (named as rom.zip, of course).

Just a quick question. When I replace the RUU rom.zip file with the eris_rootrom.zip , does it matter what I name it? I'm just been naming it "rom", but I'm wondering if it shuold be named rom.zip?

It does make new copies each time in the temp folders, but I've been deleting them each time I do this.
