Eris Tips and Tricks

Does SenseUI really kill battery? Would not using it and using a plain old HomeUI work better?

My favorite thing about Sense is the HTC widgets and the Scenes...
I just like the vanilla UI because it makes my phone look more like a..computer, and more serious. I mean, you can always switch between the UIs.

Is there a way to get this phone to sound a tone or something repeatedly if you get a new voicemail/text/whatever? I came from the Motorola Z6TV, and it would beep once a minute until you shut it off to notify you that you missed something. This only seems to flash the trackball which is useless when it's in your pocket. Any help would be appreciated!

I found a little trick to the location settings. There is no reason to leave 'location setting' on. I believe leaving this on is a bigger drain on the battery than having gps on as it is always finding your location on the network. If gps is on it is only working if an app requests it.

I leave the first option 'use wireless networks' on at all times. This allows apps to get your coarse location as needed. This functions the same whether the second option is on or not.

you will notice that if you are in the settings/location menu you cannot turn gps on without also turning on 'location setting' if they are both off. you can however turn gps on and then turn 'location setting' off and still get gps functionality in apps. I just leave both off here and use the widget to turn gps on and off without activating 'location setting'. You will also notice after doing this that if you return to the location menu or reboot the phone 'location setting' will automatically turn on. you can tell whether it is off or on by the bars being displayed next to the crosshairs in the notification bar.

It may not be much and the only evidence I have supporting battery drain is that turning location on on my old dumb phone was a battery killer. Also helpful for the big brother types.

I've found that I've accidentally added some words to the auto correction dictionary. Is there a method to remove accidentally added words, or at least reset it to factory settings without resetting the entire phone.

Thank you

In conjunction with the words, if you are spelling something and the word predictor/speller bar comes up and its blocking your view or in a place you dont like then long press somewhere on the bar and slide it to a more desirable location.

Anyone found a way to stop the boot sounds on the Eris? There is a little chime when the htc logo appears, etc. If its in "Sound and Display" I don't see it.

only 1 way i know, but your phone on silent or vibrate only when you turn it off. when you turn it back on it will start with no sounds.

I've found that isn't entirely true, sometimes it will make the sounds even if you're phone is on silent. You have to turn the MEDIA volume off, and when you reboot it won't make noise.

Still, I wish there was a way to disable it in the settings.

o well i tested it using my "silent" profile created from the quick profiles app so i wasn't paying attention to all the sound settings i suppose.

I just did the "Disable SenseUI" trick and I'm shocked it's that easy to do! I do have a question about it, though. Is there any negative to doing this? Are there any reasons other than the widgets and "scenes" and the visual slick-ness to SenseUI? I only ask because it seems that disabling Sense would have a positive effect on speed/battery life.

But if there's some key things I wouldn't be able to do, I'd consider switching back.

Thanks!

When you set the default HOME instead of HTC Sense as your default then the only thing you are really giving up are the HTC widgets and their custom UI. The dial pad is the HTC one and not the stock android one (thank goodness). The same goes for the other custom HTC apps like "people". You will still get your notifications and the phone will be fully functional.

Just changing the look and giving up some widgets :)

There are a bunch of home replacements in the market. Some of them are pretty cool.

It's kind of tempting then, because the original UI seems like it could be a little snappier, no? Widgets are easily replaced. Would disabling Sense have a positive effect on performance?

I see a performance increase when using the stock android home. The screen orientation switches seem to be faster and the app dock is really quick. You only get 3 screens though and some of the HTC widgets are very nice. I think that beautiful widgets in the market has recreated a lot of the HTC widgets with some more options but that does cost some money.

just be aware that either way that you set "HOME" as your default the "HTC Sense" app is started up. I can boot up taskpanel and kill "HTC Sense" at that point but it will eventually start up in the background. Without rooting the phone I don't know of a way to stop it from starting up. It doesn't seem to use much in the way of resources when it's not activated though and the phone does seem to boot faster (although still quite slow). With one of the stock "scenes" my phone boots up to about 79MB of memory after killing some autostart apps like shopsavvy. With the default home it's closer to 110MB so there is some significant memory savings using the android home.

I wanted a quick way to search my contacts without pressing multiple buttons and came across an app called quickdroid. Exactly what I was looking for. It is able to search all the content on your phone just like android search on 2.0 but without the google stuff integrated.

New guy, first post and yeah, a question lol
Coming over from a BB Pearl and still learning the Eris. Hoping the OS update will fix the non-premium yahoo email issues I'm having.

OK, questions. On the BB I could set each email account to have a different notification tone, haven't figured out how to do that on the Eris. Can it be done?

If/when I get all my email accounts back up, will they all come into the single mail box?

Is it possible to save a picture from the web browser?

OK, enough for now. Thanks in advance!
