Eris Tips and Tricks

Might've been posted, but this is the BEST thing for battery life, by FAR.

When you know you're going to be in an area without service for an extended period of time, OR you know you won't be able to answer your phone for a period of time, put your phone in airplane mode.

It deactivates all wireless activities, messages, phone calls, wifi, everything...the phone remains on, however...it basically turns into a clock. You can still access all your files, just can't make any calls, browse the web or send and receive texts.

Went to sleep last night, put it in airplane mode...82% when I went to bed...82% when I woke up.
Why not turn it off? Without having any internet, calls, or texts the phone becomes a paperweight, just turn it off if your not gonna use it haha

A few reasons.

One, if you may need it for the calendar, as a clock, for your notepad, musc...basically any of the non-phone and internet features, it's still on.

Two, it actually uses more battery to turn the phone off and on again, not to mention turning it on takes well over a minute.

This tip is actually in the Eris manual, but I didn't know it was there until I read the thing. You may have noticed there is no setting that allows you to have vibrate on without sound (i.e., "vibrate only"). The only choice through settings is to lower the ringer volume all the way. There are options hidden in the menu that pops up when you press and hold the physical red end call button for vibrate only and sound on/off.

What is the thing to the left of the speaker on the front of the phone for? It's near the top left of the Verizon logo. I've been wondering what it is.

That's the light sensor. The device will set the screen brightness automatically based on the amount of light in the room as sensed by that thing.

This is my third day with the Eris. First night I randomly happened on the settings you get when you hold down the end/power key. Very useful - power off, silent mode, vibrate mode, airplane mode, network on/off. I love to turn vibrate off and on easily.

It's the Proximity Sensor. It basically tells the phone when you're holding it to your head, so you don't push buttons with your ear

Google is your friend.... :D

Someone mentioned using the "back" key to back out of programs. But what if it's the browser, where it'll just keep backing into previously visited pages?

ANyone have an app or something that changes the way you can answer the phone...I seem to be picking it up while the phone is in my pocket..not liking the slide down to answer..any ideas??

How about hitting the "send" key?

Well, hitting send key really wouldn't work, since I'm not even getting a chance to hit the button. As soon as I reach into my pocket to answer the phone, it seems that I'm already connected. Is there a lock you can put on something more than just the slide bar??

I'm now using the dolphin browser. I highly recommend it over the default browser. the default browser is an absolute resource hog and alone can cause my eris to lag. With dolphin if you hold down the back button for a few seconds a dialog pops up and you can actually exit the application and clear the cache at the same time. You can also set it up to store it's cache on the SD card where it should be.

Nice! That's my biggest gripe with the stock browser!

One of the most basic and useful features of Android:

LONGPRESS

I see so many questions here and all over the internet that could be solved if people understood that there is more then just the "menu" button.

So when in doubt, press and hold. Ta-da!!!

Yup. Been wondering how to refresh web page. Just longpress on page (non link area) and menu pops up.

Thx bjf88!

prevent gmail email contacts from synching to phone

posted by tomlin2
Log into Gmail and make sure all the contacts you want to sync are under "My Contacts". Then using the Eris: People>Groups (3 heads on the bottom)>Menu>Sync Groups. Uncheck "Sync all contacts". Whenever Gmail creates a contact it will be in "All Contacts" which will no longer sync.

all this syncing biz is lost on me, i dont use gmail or any of that, but i think to force a sync if auto-sync is off is simply

settings>data sync>google>and tap any of the services and they sync.
