Eris to v2.x, when?

At least people are being nicer about the 2.x update than they are about the mandatory data fees. There are more "i hate Verizon because of this #$#$$#$ fee" posts on the Verizon forum than there are 2.x posts in here.

Strange. I thought they pretty much required a data plan with the Eris... It wouldn't make sense to get one without a data plan, right? Otherwise you'll pay out the butt.

You are required, but in theory you could get away sans-data plan if you live/work in a highly Wifi saturated area and don't travel often.

Sounds pretty awful to me. Like having another iPod touch, but with phone features grafted on.

Well I could easily get away without a data plan since 95% of the time i am somplace with WiFi.

But what most of the people are upset about is the mandatory $10 fee for all multimedia phones now. Apparently a lot of people don't use the internet with their EnV Touch or Chocolate and are not pleased about being forced to pay $10 for a feature they never use.

I agree, but I can see getting away with a 50MB/mo data plan for 14.99/mo if you constantly have wifi.. That is assuming you also constantly have your phone plugged in cause the wifi will suck the life out of it!

Why is that awful? i get all the functionality of my Eris but pay $30 less a month. What is the down side other than not being able to check my facebook page in west podunkville?

Actually the WiFi takes less battery than the 3G network to run. I get about three days with my phone in standby with WiFi on and onlt one with the 3G on.

I have a coworker on T-mobile with a G1 that has somehow done away with his data plan. Our company gave us all Sprint Mifis for use with our laptops and he is using that now instead of a data plan. It is working out pretty well for him, especially since we get 4G in most places with the Mifi and air cards.

To some it could be.

Haven't really used my touch in a months now thanks to my Eris.

Same here. No real use for it anymore.

Yeah, I've got Locale set up to turn on WiFi in places I frequent that have WiFi and to disable the mobile network (I believe. Not sure I set the second half.. Might make sense.) Unfortunately, transitioning back to the mobile network gives me some pretty severe issues.

I think you can still get on the Verizon network without a data plan if you buy the phone without a contract. I have friend who bought an Imagio of craigslist and connected it with a standard voice plan. No data.

You can start out that way, but they will force the data plan once they realize what you are using. The real problem is that most smartphones are designed to be connected 24/7. It can be rather difficult to avoid the use of data on many of these phones (not all). Once you get that first bill with accidental data charges and no data plan you will wish you had one.

The Eris is pretty clearly not a flip phone?
And yeah, in my opinion, it's pretty disheartening that they're giving away the Eris now, after I got swindled into paying $99 for it. It takes away some of the flare of having a nice phone when you have a free nice phone.

You didn't get swindled and it's not sad or disheartening that the price went down. It's actually good because it signals there is rapid development of the technology. When the Eris (and most other non 2.1 phones) get upgraded to 2.1, the chatter will turn completely around as to how great it is to own an older technology that gets retrofitted. Usually the price stays high on stagnant technology.

I live in a metro area, my work has wifi, my house has wifi, most of the downtown is wired for wifi, and many restaurants and clubs i go to are wired too. The only time i ever turn my mobile network on is when i am in the woods with my Boy Scout troop to use gps with google maps briefly and figure out where i am.
