Eris to v2.x, when?

just so everyone knows, my brother received 2.1 this morning on his MOTO droid.

Yeah, we're seeing more and more reports of its arrival on Droids.. apparently the process is moving along smoothly.

Perhaps that bodes well for Eris users awaiting their 2.1 OTA.

I'm still sticking it out and waiting for 2.1. The way I see it, by Christmas, we'll all be clamoring for the 2.5 release! lol.
That got an OTA date of 24 Nov 2010. I read it on a tissue while I was just in the bathroom. Odd that somebody just wrote that on some toilet tissue and left it in the stall.

What color was it written in?

A redish / brownish coloring. Why? It kinda smeared off when I touched it, so I don't have any real proof anymore. :(

Well, despite rumors to the contrary, I have grave doubts if Verizon documentation, even merely approaching any official stature, are composed using feces, even those in very early pre-publication draft form.

Well yeah, but it was at my local Verizon stores bathroom. So it may hold some weight....

What's odd is the fact that the more and more I wait for the official OTA, the more I'm becoming satisfied with my 1.5. Almost to the point where I don't want an update unless every little bug (that's already known) is taken care of. Even the smallest of problems. I've been so wrapped up in trying to find out so much about the 2.1, that I don't even think I've really even seen all my phone can do as it is.

There's probably a clinical term for that. ;)

There is, although the exact term slips my mind I do recall that it stems from a related condition known as "fear of alimony syndrome."

It can be gotten over, it can be defeated, identity theft being the method of choice, I believe, along with long-distance relocation.

Hi all, really a noob here, and this may be been referred to before (I just can't review 79 pages) BUT has anyone posted a youtube video on insalling the leak. I'm just really, really, really scared to brick this phone......but also don't wanna wait for the OTA, if and when that ever happens?

Aw damn, I just saw one on Youtube the other day. Can't remember who it was, but I know it was a very young kid that did it. Video pretty much showed step by step how to do it. But just search, I know it's one there.

Verizon folks told us (back in January) that the new OS 2.1 would enable voice dialing, and that the new OS would be here in a matter of weeks. It looks like it is time for a class action suit against Verizon for selling us a product with a significant defect - that cannot be used by in the usual (and promised) way (e.g., with bluetooth for dialing in the car). The option for VZ would be to let us out of our contracts without penalty.

A few days late to the party on this one, but huh?

Ok, all Android devices have Voice Dialing. The Eris on 1.5 or 2.1 has Voice Dialing. However, no Android device has Voice Dialing via Bluetooth. Can't happen right now the Android OS does not support it and I don't remember ever seeing anything from Verizon, HTC or Google that said the Eris was going to get it. I don't even think it is on Google's priority list to get this into the next OS. If a salesman told you this and was actually talking about Bluetooth Voice Dialing then you were lied to. It sucks, but you're never going to see anything come of it no matter how mad you get about it.

Reminds me of that rant awhile ago from that person who wanted to sue because his YouTube app didn't work lol

Well suing about it is extreme, but seriously, the You Tube app was one of the ones that HTC/Verizon preinstall. I honestly don't think that it is unreasonable to expect the STOCK apps to work correctly on a device.

I mean really? Shouldn't the consumer expect things to work correctly? If we expect mediocrity, then that is what companies will provide us.

Sheesh, it sure would be nice if more posters took the time to understand the relationship between Google, HTC and Verizon OR how basic business law works. We continually get people who think that some retail persons opinion constitutes a contract and that warrants some lawsuit - despite there being no damages.

Let me help a bit - there is no, nada, nil chance of any lawsuit because Verizon didn't contract with you for anything more than they sold you. Even if they did (which they didn't), you still didn't give them a chance to fulfill. As far as I can tell there was one Verizon PR person who vaguely indicated an update could be coming in Q1. Anyone with 3 days involvement in software development can tell you that was an ESTIMATE! SD is fraught with unexpected (and reasonable) delays.

Not that it matters but Verizon could release a 5 byte firmware revision that changed the color of the sun on the weather widget from Pantone PMS 143 to PMS 144 and label it as release 2.05 - available for download. "Promise" kept.

Alright, I came very close to starting a new thread for this, but thought better of it anticipating the rolled eye smileys and pictures of that sheriff with the bored, "Oh not that again" look on his face. ;)

So, here is what I have to report, in the proper, sticky thread:

I just got home from Best Buy, where I was picking up a wireless printer for my wife's pc. Naturally I migrated over to the cell phone area to have a look around; Best Buy in my town has equipment from several carriers, Verizon included.

That was when I spotted a gentleman in pleated suit pants, white shirt and tie. A name tag on the shirt said, "Verizon," in red, and beneath that, "Regional Coordinator." Beneath that, "Scott."

I went right up to him, as he was just sort of meandering around the area with his hands clasped behind his back, and made eye contact with him. "Is there something I can show you this morning?" he asked with a smile. Very professional fellow.

I told him I am a Verizon customer since January. I told him what device I have and then I just squarely asked if he had any information about the anticipated update for the Android Eris.

Here is what he said, not word for word as it was a long conversation, but the four main points:

- The Over The Air update for your device was developed to completion on March 29th.

- It is rather large, and contains bits which address the weaker processor which the Eris runs on and the graphics rendering of the device and, of course, many other big changes not the least of which is the operating system itself.

- Motorola's Droid update is much smaller and not nearly as far-reaching and will finish its OTA for existing owners over the next two weeks or so.

- The OTA for the Eris will begin in a matter of days, not weeks, because it will overlap the OTA for the Droid because we have begun deployment of new and backup servers for that purpose.

There you have it, those of you eager for the OTA will likely start seeing it well before the end of this month, in my opinion based on Scott's rather educated remarks. This person was not your classic floor monkey; I had never seen him or any rep like him in a Best Buy or even in a Verizon retail outlet.

He told me he was there "only for a few hours, I have to visit four more before the closing time today."

let's hope so. I've been waiting and waiting and too afraid to do the "leak", but watched several vidoes on the 2.1 leak, and let's just say that "I'm jonesing for it". But then I "jones" for my upgrade time to come just so I could get this phone - and I do love it. If "they" call a blackberry a crackberry, what do we call Android?

That's some very good news! Thanks for passing along the information. I just had a new phone sent out to me because my touch input kept force closing on me whenever I tried to type the word "I'm".(weird eh?) I was planning on installing leak v2 as soon as I got my new phone, but after hearing this bit of info I might just be patient and wait. Thanks again.

Yeah, I had forgotten I gave you my password so you could April Fool's prank the forums. That was a good one, but what took you so long?

No, I'm afraid it's real, folks.

The remainder of the conversation had to do with the lack of official announcements ("just too many techs working in too many different places and too many sources for output to get it all together," was the central idea of his responses), Verizon's interest in the iPhone and their disappointment in Palm sales ("pricing") and the Nexus One with "Googles marketing genius."

Anyway, the "days not weeks" part sure sounded nice, along with his description of the actual software in the OTA.
