Eris to v2.x, when?

Just got off the phone with Verizon.

Spoke to a CS Rep, and asked him if I could upgrade my software. He put me on hold for a couple of minutes and then returned to say that the HTC Eris OTA started 4 days ago and will take 2 weeks in total for all phones to receive the update.

He said that it will be a very obvious update screen when it comes through, and it will ask whether to install or install later. He noted that I will have the 2.1 on my Eris within 10 days from today.

Sounds promising.

Not to say you are wrong or liar but I called yesterday and she said that she couldnt tell me when, but when it happens Ill know and that It will be available online for download as well. Same story from htc rep.

Conflicting reports, about the update, from users here, myself included, seem to have been going on since the device first came out.

The only conclusion we can draw from that, at this point in the game, is that no official word has been passed down to those employees of Verizon who are imparting these sayings to us; are they, each one of them, merely making things up? repeating something they read or heard was read on a blog or forum such as this one?

If this latest report is true, that the OTA is actually streaming to Eris users as we speak, we'll certainly see a post and screen shot quite soon, it seems.

Just called Verizon. Here's how the convo went down.

Me: My wife and I both have Droid Eris' and we were wondering when the 2.1 update would be coming. We were told quarter 1, but we still haven't received it.

Rep: Absolutely, let me look at the schedule for that phone. I know they just did the Motorola update so that should be right behind it.

Me: That's really great to hear.

Rep: hmmm.....hmmmm. It doesn't even show a date here for that release. It actually still says quarter 1 which can't be right. This tells me that HTC hasn't given over the update to us yet for distribution, so we have no date. My best guess is that it will be within the next month, because it doesn't say that it's been canceled or delayed, it just still says quarter 1.

Me: Well thank you for looking into that, I really appreciate it.

Rep: Absolutely, is there anything else I can do for you today besides the update information?

Me: No, but thank you for looking into that, have a great day.

Alright guys, I'm a new poster so bear with me. Somebody give it to me straight. What would be worth more? Waiting for the OTA from verizon or htc or wherever, or to go ahead and download the leaked 2.1?

2.1 definitely has some bugs. Some of these bugs show up for some people and not for others. I would suggest checking out the condensed 2.1 bugs thread.

All that being said, I upgraded to 2.1 and am very happy. I have some of the bugs, e.g, 50% time without a signal, but I've found workarounds for all of them. I also found that running Helix as opposed to Sense has made an improvement in my dialer speed.

Buff gave you good advice all around. All that I'd add is that my answer would depend on how tech-savvy you feel, and whether you enjoy tinkering with your phone or not. If you don't enjoy the tinkering, at this point you're probably better off waiting. If you do, though ... my advice would be to go for it, after you've read the other reports and if you're sure you're comfortable with it all.

Of course, if you thoroughly enjoy the tinkering, my real advice would be to wander over to XDA and read up on the rooted 2.1 ROMS those guys are creating. Personally, if I still had a 1.5 phone I'd install a rooted 2.1 for sure. But again, you have to be comfortable with all that entails ...

Possibly, it's been down for me off and on today so maybe that's why.

Here, too. All sorts of strange behaviors off and on, as you say.

And what happened to the "who's here" area, where all the user names of members on line were listed at the front page?

Lurker turned poster - Just got off the phone with Verizon. Inquired about the timing of the 2.1 update.

Here was the response from Amanda after she put me on hold for 10 minutes to check on it: "HTC is releasing a new phone soon and as soon as that phone comes out the Eris will receive its update".

File that under FWIW.

Amanda. Nice name.

But what does releasing a new phone have to do with the OTA?

I think it might be the other way around. Verizon knows it would be a slap in Eris owners face if a new HTC Android phone was released with 2.1 before we had it. Could it be possible that the "Incredible" is being held back until we have our OTA?

Knock yourself out. It'll take your mind off the update.

I'm not really stressing the update anymore, after the reports of the lacking image quality I would be happy sitting at 1.5 until this was resolved, no matter how long that took.

Also I don't own The Sims, so here I stay for now. lol

My youngest kid loves the Sims game. Apparently it's an ongoing thing..

.. heck, I watched her on it for a while, all I saw was cartoon people walking around, talking, swimming and fixing meals.

Stimulating and fun in real life, but on a screen?

Ok, we're communicating on a screen. :D

Exactly.

I had the first one when it came out years ago and it was fun for a few hours then I never picked it up again. I tried to convince my husband to buy Sims 3 and he refused because I would play it once and get bored. I suppose he was right. *sigh*

I think I'd rather swim IRL instead of simulating it on a computer anyday!

Well I spoke to an executive customer service rep Liz and she said she was unaware of any new update she asked me how did I hear about it and I told her that it was one of their PR guys named Rany she said she would get back to me no word since going to call her tomorrow
