- Symptoms:
Unable to download anything from app store.
error is: "<name of app>" could not be downloaded due to an error. (489)
Through the power of teh googles, I learned this was an issue with the /cache partition, so I booted the phone into recovery mode in order to wipe the cache.
There is an error that displays in recovery:
E: failed to mount /cache (Invalid argument)
E: can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: can't open /cache/recovery/log
This error repeats itself on the screen.
- Things I have attempted to do to fix this:
1. wipe cache partition
RESULT: Says wiping cache partition, then the same errors repeat on the screen.
2. Wipe /data and /cache partition (factory reset)
RESULT: Begins to wipe partitions, then says it failed, and the same errors appear on the screen
3. Used the handy instructions, Odin, and the new CWM you lovely people have written up on these forums to attempt to root phone (Installation failed) - same errors
4. Attempted to flash a new, modded ROM hoping it would repartition the memory (Installation failed)
5. Attempted to flash with the stock ROM and recovery (Installation failed - same errors)
I've attempted this both with and without the SD card, and with a completely different SD card.
The phone still works. It still boots, it still loads the same ROM it has always had, still has all the settings and data it had before (data wipe didn't happen, it seems), and can make and recieve phone calls and connect to the internets.
It just cannot download any new apps, or update any existing ones. I'm at my wit's end, and considering replacing the phone completely, it just feels that since so many other things are just fine for this device, even if the /cache partition is corrupted, there should be some way to repartition it, or reformat it so that it can be used once more to its full capacity.
Any help at all is appreciated!!
Thanks!

The only other suggestion I can make is if you've gotten this far and still haven't figured it out, then maybe something's wrong with the hardware that's keeping the software from functioning properly. Past experiences have taught me that the two are more interlinked than we tend to realize until something goes wrong.
