Help Estimated Effort To Build Custom Android Based Os

I am looking to build my own Android based OS with a custom made GUI which is different from most after market packages like Cyanogen. I would like to build this for Android enabled phones and for a particular mobile network.

I am currently trying to put together a specification package for the development of this software and was looking for advice, guidance, tips and further information regarding this.

I was looking to see if I can get advice on:
1. Estimated level of effort to develop the first version of this software for a base line Android enabled phone - still in the process of deciding which handset to use
2. What software packages would I need to develop this OS?
3. Any advice on training material that could give me knowledge on this?

I dont have prior experience of developing software and have therefore have limited knowledge regarding this, so any advice given to me would definitely help.

Hey @scary alien and @Slug have there been any reports of posts just disappearing? This is the second time in 3days I've posted a reply (the same as Slug's actually), came back and it's been disappeared!

It's probably due to the duplicate thread issues we've been having...your post/reply might be getting caught in the cleanup of the dupe threads of which this one was certainly involved.

I'm guessing you're seeing some error after you hit reply that it can't post--that's likely because the thread got cleaned-up before your post hit the database.
