Even though 3D phones seem gimmicky...

I've seen the head-tracking video before, very cool stuff.

I'd love to see a fully functional Holodeck, ala Star Trek style before I die, heh.

For the guys that claimed the 3D feature to be a gimmick, let me tell you that you are dead on correct. I was over at my local sprint store and my connect let me check out a coworkers Evo 3D. Hate to say it but the 3D feature was a huge disappointment. It was a cool feature and I admit that the 3D was very strong, but only if you don't move. It was more of a 3D hologram than the 3D I had experienced.( I work with Televisions.) Basically to the point, If the point of view changes, (you moving or the phone moving) it will definitely start to hurt your eyes. One thing I wanted to point out is that if you're using the camera, its impossible not to move. Everything else on the phone was impressive. It does take a bit for the phone to load 3D content, but thats understandable.

Just wanted to point this out for the people that think the 3D was necessary. I'm a huge fan of 3D, and was going to port my number over from tmo, but now I might just get a sensation 4g instead.

Not to disrespect you because you are with tmo but if the 3D is what you want wait 2 more years till they perfect the 3D tech..

And well most people here WE actually are not into the 3D feature we care more about the specs of the phone itself not really the 3D thats just an add on for me and others im afraid :p

But good thing that you clarified about how the 3D looks for real :o
Kinda disappointing tho, but well you cant have all

Yeah, well I was planning to switch from tmo, getting the service credit but it just made more sense to get the sensation. To each their own. I know the 3D is just a feature and can be avoided, I just wanted to clarify that it was the feature that everyone focused on, and in reality it shouldn't have been because the Evo 3D is still an amazing phone overall.

Unfortunately because of how the phone has been marketed everyone is going to based their opinions of this phone on it's 3D feature first and as a smartphone second. Which in my opinion hurts the phone overall. People will lose sight of what a great smartphone it is and focus on it's somewhat disappointing 3D feature first and foremost.

Wait are you saying the 3D had a pop out the screen in your face effect? Or a depth into the screen effect? Was it strong? How was the effect in games (Spiderman demo)? Did you turn the 3D slider all the way up? Did movies (Green Hornet) appear on the screen in the same way you would expect on a home 3D TV or 3D movie at the theaters? Did the camera take 3D pics and video that pop out in your face or go in the screen with depth or both?

Just in case anyone was unsure, 3D is a major selling point on whether or not I'll get this phone. I like the 3DS, but don't own one yet, and I don't have a 3DTV.

It seems many of your objections might have been overcome with a display that required glasses.

And I just gotta say - how many MORE people would be calling it gimmicky because of the glasses.

Show of hands - how many people know the first atomic bomb was called the gimmick?

I'm hating how the word gimmick once meant good or bad but now thanks to 3D, it's coming to mean strictly bad.

that hologram effect described is harder to see on a TV or movie screen because those screens are immobile. The reason we perceive that effect is because we EXPECT that with an image that has depth, the perspective should change if we move around. But it doesn't. That's a fundamental limitation of stereoscopy.

As long as our 3D tech is based on stereoscopy, we won't get around that issue.

Actually, the same absence of perspective change affects a 2D image. But we've seen these 2D images enough that our brains accept it. I see no reason why the brain won't adapt with stereoscopy. It's just too novel an experience for most.

Let's go back to the source.

That reviewer said it had that holographic look unless he was in the sweet spot - and when he was in the sweet spot, then it looked 3D.

Gimmick - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Sorry to whine, but many are removing the opportunity to ever have in the vernacular again - Hey, check out this cool gimmick!

Don't get me wrong, I hate having to wear the 3D glasses also, and apologies for the misuse of gimmick, but my point was that the 3D aspect was a little different than what I had imagined before hand. The 3D effect is very strong and defintely there when you are watching 3D content, playing 3D games, and using the camera and it does look great when you are on that sweet spot, but when I was using the camera, it puts a lot of strain on the eyes. Hate to be the negative guy because I have been waiting for this phone for some time, but it took less than 5 minutes of using the camera before it turned me away from the feature. The strain comes from the back and forth of the holographic. Also it seems like the distance you move where the hologram effect appears is very minimal.

Now I don't want to underestimate the evo 3D itself, because even without the 3D it is an amazing phone, and definitely better then the htc sensation, but it wasnt worth paying the ETF and switching carriers for me after playing with it. Maybe alot of you guys don't care about the 3D feature, but the only reason I planned to get the Evo 3D over the sensation was because it had 3D. Otherwise the phones are very similiar.

Just letting you know from what I read the eye strain goes away in a week, some people don't even get eye strain from the glasses free 3D. But anyway was the 3D effect pop out in your face or depth into the screen for movies, games, and the camera?

thanks Early for the correction. i misunderstood the post.

My experience with the Nintendo 3DS was similar. The sweet spot was very narrow. It's the tradeoff for no glasses.

For me, I tend to feel eyestrain the first few minutes of watching a 3D movie in a theater, and then I get used to it. For small things, like stereo pair images, autostereograms, or displays like the Nintendo 3DS, I have no eye strain at all.

Not sure if it's conditioning or something genetic. I'll sometimes compare it to motion sickness. We all have various tolerances to it.

I saw the movie Preist in 3D and my eyes got tired. Then I saw the Green Lantern in 3D and didnt have a problem at all. I just wish movies had more in yo face 3D. But its probably not that way for eye strain reasons.

Actually thats not the case. My parents said that when they were younger and went to see a 3D movie, that the whole audience would duck and cover from the 3D action and they didn't feel any eyestrain at all. If there was an explosion, stuff fly at them and they would move or try to block whatever it was. That's what REAL 3D is like. Some reason modern 3D wants to be depth instead of the in your face action, which if you ask me, is a step sideways (not backwards), or at best, a baby step forward. If 3D could be the pop out of your face kind and the depth kind, that would be a whole leap forward because it would be an interactive experience and the screen wouldn't be visible, it'd be a whole new experience.

Edit: when I said a baby step forward I meant compared to HDTV, not pop out 3D.

Sprint is doing a good job of being ahead of the curve.

It wont be long till there is 3D youtube, netflix, blockbuster, and games, and they become the norm in our daily lives. This is the future of visual entertainment, no doubt.

What people call a gimmick today becomes the norm tomorrow in far too many cases.

Just because you aren't ready, doesn't mean innovation should stop.

To be honest some previews have the in yo face 3D and I love it. What could be stopping Hollywood is that a 3D movie cost around 10 bucks. Maybe they sell more tickets in 2D which equates to not making a movie more eye popping. I want to duck and dodge at the movies.

YouTube already offers 3D content. Correct me if I'm wrong but we will have an app to offer us 3D content on the EVO from HTC. Not unless I misread the article.

You're right. We get Blockbuster 3D app for renting 3D movies and we get 3D YouTube, and Netflix hasn't gone 3D (yet).
