Android has every "good" app that the iPhone has. Urbanspoon, Pandora, Movies, Shazam, etc......
So what is missing? To me it's as if society has just become too lazy. I don't want to touch one extra button to do a video call and I will settle for it being wifi only, so I don't have to hit that one extra button. iPhone is seamless, but is capable of less.

The funny thing is, once upon a time everyone was bragging about how theirs was smaller (phones that is). I was quite proud of my Samsung i500 Palm phone. And now there is a bit of a reversal. Though I'd still like to see something like the Pixi with a 3.2-3.3" screen and rather slim.
On another note, my only big beef with Android is the lack of email equality. Give me one email app, period. And give me push across the board. Palm got that one right, and it is a feature I miss. I don't bash any phones and give all their due, but I have a hard time even bringing up the iphone because it's just not available outside of AT&T. Most I talk to that don't own them won't even consider them because they're not leaving Verizon or Sprint between one's coverage and the other's prices.
And there are a few I work with that have iphones, and we were out to dinner last weekend. Guitar player was trying to remember the lyrics to a Johnny Cash song, and they all whipped out their iphones, furiously typing. I leisurely took out the Evo, hit the find button, typed in the name of the song and lyrics and two button presses later had them up before they did. Others were laughing at the table at the dualing phones. No 4g needed either. Am looking forward to comparing the 4 and the Evo when they pick them up though. Most I know can upgrade day one. And my Pixi or Pre would've had the info up even quicker. The Pixi I just would've started typing.

Apple does a good job in pushing their iPhone, and tons of people love them.
I, however, will never own one, and will never love one. I've used an iPhone before, and used to own an iPod Touch. I'm not a sheep.... I can think for myself. If thinking for myself means i'll have to push a few extra buttons or do an extra tweak here or there to get something working admirably, i'll do it. Besides the fact, that like most everybody that's on these forums, I love to tinker with my phone. It's like a hobby to me. Sure, you can jailbreak an iPhone, but in all honesty, the amount of stuff that you can do with a jailbroken iPhone is still overshadowed by what you can do with a rooted Android device, or even an unlocked WinMO device.
This is what I do every single day. I come to Android Forums, PPCGeeks, and XDA To find out what's new in the cell phone world that will make my phone better than ever.
I had a person on these forums ask me, "If you're not going to flash any new roms to your phone right away, why not just root your phone using the Unrevoked method?".
I responded with, "Because I like to have the option there to flash if I chose so, which I did do. Not to mention, rooting the toast way is tons more fun."
I personally don't think I could have the level of fun tinkering with the iPhone that I can have tinkering with an Android, or even an WinMo device.
Simply put, to me, I look at an iPhone or an iPod touch, and it all looks the same. I look at an Android device (One of the many), and look at ever changing possibilities. Android devices come in many shapes, sizes, different colors, different specs. Even the OS itself evolves in look, with different OS versions, Sense or No-sense, different custom user made GUIs, etc etc.
It's like going into a candy shop, there's a world of choices. Different types of candy every every sort, and surely even if you don't have a very big sweet tooth, you'll find something to tickle your fancy. That's Android to me.
If I went into a candy shop, and all they sold was snicker bars, and snickers with almonds, and that's IT, nothing else, i'd walk straight out and never think of going back in. That's what I see the iPhone as.
Any way, that's my take on it. ^_^

I never bothered to check, but what does the front facing camera on the EVO record *video* in, because 1.3mp is used a lot in the webcam industry, but the actual video resolution is still VGA.
It really doesn't make a different to me in regards to the front-facing camera, because the screens are so small even VGA video will look good, even VGA res on the EVO would look fine. Just asking to ask really.
I wonder what the FFC on the iPhone 4 is for still shots? 800x600?

Well i can already tell that I am way younger than a lot of you guys here...The sense i don't care so much about "walled gardens" and "apple's practices"
Myself...i'm 17 and starting my sophomore year of college this year(graduated early)....I look at the quality of apps on my EVO and look at the quality of apps on my Ipod touch.
Personally the android apps have a plus for me becasue most are free or at the most .99(at least the ones i use) however they are seriously lacking in quality.
I love to facebook...talk to old friends and make new friends....The facebook app is horrible...No chat, the UI is basic and it's ashame that Palm & Webos are outdoing them.
Games...Let's not go there

It won't matter to you now, or it may never matter to you. But if and when it does you will get irritated. Till then, its a phone. College is a place in time. Have as much fun as you can. There will be plenty of time to get grumpy @ technology in the future.

If you jailbreak the iPhone 4th Gen, are there non-apple approved applications that will do things a jailed iPhone will not? Such as, view Flash or make a video chat to a non iPhone, or whatever. Are there things that a jailbroken iPhone still won't do (that are within the capaility of the hardware, but just not permitted by Apple)?

lol haha i get grumpy at technology now but yes I love college. I am hoping this year as a sophomore, at a brand new college will go equally as well as freshmen year

Yes and no.
Jailbroken iPhones have been able to multitask for quite a while now, and they do it really well without battery issues or slowdown, making me think iOS4 will really do well.
There are utilities that Apple does not allow (wireless iTunes sync, WiFiFoFum, etc) that are really useful that for whatever reason were not allowed or were removed from the App store.
Jailbroken iPhones have a lot of customization: backgrounds, widgets, info bars, and all sorts of other things.
The android OS has all of this stuff too and a little more, IMO. The iPhone UI though is superb and near-perfect. You can find just about anything without having to be ultra-familiar with the OS. Everything works the way you'd assume it would. The android for the most part is this way as well, it just has a couple more buttons to get used to.
All that being said, I'll definitely be jailbreaking my IP4 so that it will do what i want it to do, and not what steve wants.

The iPhone has become the status symbol for the masses and I can't stand it. I can't go to the store, Dr. office, gas station without 10 people with them. Maybe it's stupid, but it was one of the main reason I dumped mine, and I've had all 3.
Apple builds quality hardware period, and they are very controlling on how you use it and the software. This has ALWAYS been their mindset, and it is never going to change. I do believe what happened to Mac vs. PC will happened to iOS vs Android in the long term, but it will not have the same results it did against Windows. Apple makes these phones with huge margin, they are not looking to be the sales volume leader, they have been very clear about this. The reason their financials are doing so amazing is because they took this strategy and the device ended up selling like a mass population device with HUGE margin.
As far as AT&T goes, I think it has more to do with where you live with any carrier. I have been on all 4 of the major carriers and have never had any problem with AT&T and the hate against them is generally clueless ranting because they read AT&T sucks 5 times on the internet so it must be true.

I have never been a big fan of AT&T. I did have an iphone 3gs before but they pissed me off. On one of the later updates for the phone itunes did not want to play nice with windows 7. In the middle of the update itunes started giving me all kinds of errors and the phone got messed up while doing the update. I called att&t and they told me call apple, i called apple and they just said do it again. I uninstalled and reinstalled everything, Long story short i had to wipe the phone 4 times and redo the update to get it to work. And after calling apple a few times all i got was sorry that's your problem (they made it sound nice). In the end i did the jailbreak used it until my contract was up and jumped to sprint. I don't like the way they do things, it made me feel like i was just renting the phone from them.

I used AT&T once (a long time ago) and swore I'd never go back. Been quite happy with Sprint on their cost/performance ratio (cheaper, but good enough for me). So I'm looking forward to (finally!) getting a state-of-the-art phone on Sprint.
And I'm with you on everything else you said (unquoted).
More like a downhill slide imo! Apples decision to stay on Att will limit its userbase.(through both the ipad and the iphone)
Android only joined more then one carrier last Oct. So besides the fact that its still early in existence, its also early in hands of users. Atm its on every major carrier and some prepaid phones. Pair that with the fact that Android tablets will most likely be swarming soon will bring in the devs.
Like others have said...most the useful apps are on Android plus we have the apps that customize our phone which yes comes at a cost of sometimes performance instability.(Which is why Apple does not allow it)
The Iads may also cause some backlash through some devs on Apple.(idk if it will or not) But either way atm with all the phones in hands of users and sales through the roof for Android you can bet that better apps will be here soon.
Also as the Apple store gets larger it will be harder for devs to distinguish themselves in that market so they may be looking to broaden their horizons in the Android market.
So imo you are certainly right about some apps on the Apple market(such as the facebook app)but I rly can't see that trend continue'ing with all the users coming to Android and the sickening amount of phones that will be out at the end of the year containing Android.

This is a great forum where it seems everyone is right and making great points. I do think that the Iphone has better quality apps with more features. But android has some nice apps as well that offer widgets and more customization.
In the end android is kind of ugly and clunky. Not elegant at all. It gets the job done but not in a sexy way. The Iphone does everything sexier and nicer.......... Even something as simple as when the screen rotates. It seems like android just does a sharp turn and thats it. While the iphone slides into place. For the average user(which hardly any of us are) Apple wins hands down because of the fact that they get what people want. They no people like elegance and beauty. they like the more human feel of the iphone. It feels like its working with you. while android feels like its working for you. I choose android because i just happen to be into it right now and it offers more for me personally. Im really hoping this new guy from Palm will get android OS on par with Web Os and IOS.

lol i've been overseas for some high school experience( as well as personal trips with some modeling i;ve done)
i think the exchange program would be lovely maybe for junior or senior year for college
Apple is a hardware company that produces a great OS and some great apps - to sell the hardware. If (rhetorical) you keep that in mind, then a lot of the Apple vs. anything debate clears right up - for any market segment being discussed.
Apple does NOT want to be the sales volume leader and whatever you do, please don't throw me in that briar patch.
I've spent several days with each of my two Android phones in succession (I'm therefore a newbie) to really tweak them and get to know them. And several people here have agreed that they don't mind pushing an extra button to get things done.
Mmmmmk. The iPhone - like all Apple products - don't have that feature - they have the feature of Just Working, like all Apple products. And it's that quality that made the iPhone sales take off while Android's still finding its legs.
After VERY long talks with Android and iPhone users - and endless reading - I've come to very simple, and probably inflammatory to most, conclusions:
1. Everything listed as an iPhone weakness is really a strength.
2. Everything listed as an Android weakness is really a strength.
iPhones don't multi-task (unless jailbroken), iPhones restrict how you use them, etc.
No iPhone has a screen like this, but my EVO now does:
I'm using that to get explicit control over my battery and to allow me to control how I use my phone (including turning on the camera light and being able to unlock the screen from the screen wipe).
Using these tools, I've monitored while I fixed the bad battery status, changed the GSM(PRL) roaming (despite XDA saying it's no longer an issue, others said it helped, so I tried it) - and I even control my Mobile Network uptime to save battery, because I do NOT want to jump through the hoops to try to uninstall the Sprint apk (I like Sprint TV) but I am NOT interested, at all, in social networking.
The typical iPhone user - the people that just want things to work - the mass majority of any market - would have none of that. They'd simply seek another device before going to that trouble.
I didn't like spending my time this way - but I liked that I could if I wanted to.
For each system - the so-called weaknesses are really the benefits.
(OBTW - I've been socially networking for years - it's called talking to people.)

One month, for work, I ran up over $7000 in calls when my company ran my rear off popping all over the country, engaging in day-long 3-way calls.
And call me idiot - I just call me a consumer. Every few days, I was calling AT&T to see if this was going to be an issue on my bill, should I change plans. "Oh, you don't want to change plans until our new phones come out. I have your bill before me, and you're already on our best plan, so I can promise you, you'll have no surprises."
Someone around here has a sig that says that having an iPhone with AT&T is like having a hot chick with herpes. Change that to AIDS and they're dead on.
I've been on the Sprint network for going on three years. I still have crazy months like that - first with Helio, now with Sprint - it's just been a hundred bucks a month flat.
Anyone defending AT&T is cluelessly ranting.
But - these are all just my opinions.
PS - The world is a big place, and there are more phones than iPhone and Android - by a long shot. I just happen to fit in here as finding them the most interesting.
PPS - Regardless of which phone you prefer - I highly recommend Fring.
